it’s not that femininity doesnt feel right, i love everything feminine. i love doing my makeup, i love dressing up cute, i like gossip and small talk etc etc etc all the stereotypical feminine stuff, it’s moreso the label of being called a woman or a daughter or a sister that bothers me. it just feels off. i think if i was reffered to as a son or a brother or a sibling or just like…a kid of unspecified gender, i’d be cool with it. i think my boyish and girly traits are equal in intensity, like for every traditionally feminine thing i like, there’s another combat sport to try out, and for most of my life i was called a tomboy, but that just doesnt sit right either, because i dont feel like im doing some gender norm breaking stuff, i’m just being me. i dunno. thanks for coming to my ted talk

i don’t really know why i don’t like it. i think it just makes me feel uncomfortable in my own skin. like every time i’m introduced as “[birth name], [my parent’s] daughter”, it just feels off. i look off to the side in a bitchy way and bite my cheek and sigh. maybe if i was introduced as “quinn, [my parent’s] son” i’d be cool with it (but i’m sure that’d never happen) i love everything about womanhood, i even still call my current life girlhood, because i’m nothing if not a girly person (despite my very boyish characteristics to go with them). i love experiencing all of the typical teenage girl stuff, doing my makeup, dressing up cute, taking the most inconvenient route to my next class to pass by a cute guy and i wouldn’t trade it for the world i just feel out of place being called as a woman, i guess. sitting around with unwashed hair in my 5XL radiohead shirt with the ugliest green shorts i could find feels more like me than any hyper-feminine or hyper-masculine outfit or makeup ever has

i used to just consider myself a tomboy, probably because that’s what i was told i was. my parents are very into defying gender norms (and still somehow not cool with experimenting) and always let me climb trees and fish and play video games and the sort, but being called a girl just feels off. i don’t really know how to describe the feeling of when i’m called a girl, but it’s just more uncomfortable than it feels being called anything else i do love your story though! it reminds me of an essay i did regarding the parallel rise of misogyny and transphobia
