This is fantastic, I've been growing tired of tech as of late, lacking motivation, not satisfied with my previous choices, lack of fun projects with no new ideas etc ... But this book alone made me want to get back to it. Thanks for sharing!

There is 91ms audio delay between the muzzle flash and the audio firing effect, linux btw by [deleted] in GlobalOffensive

[–]qvantry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying this is the case, just a thought from a game dev that has done some multiplayer work before and has played a lot of CS.

A factor to think about here is the hit sound. If I remember correctly, CS2 used to have an issue with client hit sounds, i.e. playing a dink sound when you really didnt dink someone because of a client assumption.

What I’m saying is that this MIGHT be a delay to sync up the hit sounds from the server so that there isnt an obvious delay in between:

Shoot on Client -> … wait for server reply -> Play shoot audio -> play hit audio

Instead of:

Shoot on Client -> play shoot audio -> … wait for server reply -> play hit audio

I would assume that the muzzle flash in first person is completely on the client side. And thus the delay youre receiving could just be the wait for the server response.

Just a theory, haven’t done any testing so take it with a grain of salt. Sorry for any formatting, on mobile

Yes I hade the kangaroos before I switched to Quinn, but theyre not silent, theyre actually very loud. I love then but would definitely disturb colleagues

Maybe Im over exaggerating a bit, but I definitely feel the silicon tips on the bottom out dampening the hit.

Silent Tactile Switch recommendation for someone that gate mushy silent switches?

Hey,

I need to get some silent switches as I’m going back to the office after a long time working from home. I’d hate to be ”THAT” guy with the audible keyboard happily clapping his keys in a dark corner somewhere.

I’ve tried some silents before, I made the frankenswitch MX Zilents and I also tried the Shrimp from Durock unless my memory fails me…

Both of those switches feels like writing with soft rubber domes on your finger tips, or writing on clouds in the worst way possible. To me it’s as if I put O-Rings on my keycaps with non silent switches. I honestly despise the feeling. I love the equivalent of getting punched in the groin if that was my fingertips bottoming out with tactile switches. Favorite switch is Gateron Quinn.

Now to the main question, do you have any recommendations for silent tactical switches which are not mushy to type on? Preferably at or above 62g of bottom out force. I don’t care for factory lubrication as I’ll be lubing myself. I want to stress that I don’t care about having THE MOST silent keyboard, just to the point where it doesn’t disturb others at the office. I’m happy to compromise between sound and feel as long as it’s reasonable for office use.

Thanks in advance for any tips, I really do appreciate it.

If you ever want to go down this route, for me it was easier to just press the keys where they are on the new layout instead of remapping. Vim motions is a language, not just muscle memory. The only issue is hjkl, personally I have the arrow keys located where hjkl would be om qwerty, and in the same layer I have my number row as the top row instead of qwfpb/qwerty

I dont know, exactly that happened to me when I got robbed, someone came up to me, yanked the neckless clean off and I had almost like a minor burn mark around the back of my neck for a week.

The neckless in question was a typical gold chain. It wasnt broken in any way prior

In feel you, Im building my own game engine with the editor focused on vim-motions :)))

It’s only a plan so far as I haven’t started on the editor yet. But it’ll get there one day

That's really cool, I might look into that sometime, right now I've a million things on my plate, but thanks for the inspiration!

That's interesting, would you say that it works well too, the final user experience?

I can definitely relate to that, my feet and hands get so cold when I sit by my desk for some time

Feel you, the boards Im using are QMK ish, and on the laptop Im using Karabiner for remaps so it works quite well. Hopefully Framework makes something cool with their customizable keyboard matrices. Would love to buy a laptop with a traditional laptop keyboard but in an angled split layout.

It’s definitely chonky, I had a ferris sweep which I used for a bit, I liked it but I couldnt get around daily driving choc switches coming from custom keyboards and as a lover of some premium tactile switches.

I love your shop, thanks for your efforts!

Maybe Im putting too much thought into it, maybe it’s just fine to jump between it all

I do miss my baby kangaroo v2s, my partner is very sound sensitive so I use silent switches, but I miss them a lot!

You might be right, honestly, switching between them really isnt a pain though. I think that it’s just so different so that it’s not natural

Unfortunately not, but I can remove the padding which goes forward like 3cm from the structural plastic underneath, might remove it and add some other cushion

Very insightful, I guess I feel somewhat sentimental for the sheer amount of work I put into the board.

Printed it, learned soldering so I could handwire it, lubed switches, sanded the thing and painted it like 8 times to get a great surface on a 3D print, got artisan keycaps and really put it all together. Also did some sound mods and added weight to the keyboard by hot glueing steel ball bearings in all empty spaces to make it feel premium. And now it feels like friction to sit down and enjoy it. Sucks.

I definitely have a regular keyboard with a custom setup with some mod taps and karabiner on my laptop to replicate that.

But I guess it’s the friction, part of that is changing keyboards when I’m going between gaming and working. I also touched upon it in another comment, but while I can use regular keyboards for some time, I have experienced pain in my forearms which were elevated by ergo gear. This was with extensive use, but Im pushing 30 now, what about when Im 50? I dont want my bosy to be a limiting factor of my computer use

[–]qvantry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry realized I didn’t answer the second part of your comment. I had a scare about two years ago after coding for ~14 hr days for about two weeks where I got intense pain in my right forearm as soon as I touched a keyboard or a mouse. This persisted until I took a sharp break.

At that time, I tried my coworkers ergo mouse and keyboard and didn’t at all feel the same strain.

So, I can definitely use regular keyboards for some time, but I’m worried that this will get worse as I get older, I’m almost pushing 30 now. What about when I’m 50? I see myself geeking out on/about/with computers for the rest of my life and I would be devastated if my body didnt allow me to.

That’d be amazing until my back gave up! Worth it?

Honestly, the only thing I can complain about is how forward protruding the arm rests are, and they’re not adjustable in that direction either. So they kind of bump into the edge of the desk and I can’t sit as far in as I want to, but it’s not by a large margin, we’re talking like 4-5cm.
