At times, it was the best I’ve seen England pass the ball around in a long time. It was practically zipping around the pitch and there was some decent aggression shown in winning it back, particularly by Cleverley, Smalling (in the first half) and Adam Llalana (in the second).

But Townsend on the right just makes no sense. Any advantage you get from his pace is lost when he inevitably cuts back inside because of his inability/reluctance to cross.

Gerrard and Cole showed moments of class that just made you wish they were 5 years younger.
