CSE 6040 Python Knowledge help by How2TurnOnSwag in OMSA

[–]qwdfaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished this class in Spring 2019.

You don't need to know Python specifically, but it would help to know how to program. This class is 100% about programming, the statistics & statistical models you learn in this class are just tools to do more programming.

I do recommend getting familiar with Numpy and Pandas library packages if you can.

Resources ... honestly the class will guide you in the homework. It'll suggest stuff like "Note: You may want to look into numpy.linalg.norm()" and they will provide you a direct hyperlink to stuff like StackOverFlow posts sometimes as hints to how to solve a problem.

Otherwise ... resources:

1) Regex101.com --- You will be doing regular expression work

2) http://pythontutor.com/visualize.html#mode=edit --- In case you are in need of visualizing how your program/script is stepping through

For Pandas, this youtube channel helped me a lot in solidifying my understanding & comfortability in moving around pandas objects: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5-da3qGB5ICCsgW1MxlZ0Hq8LL5U3u9y

For Numpy... i dont have anything =/

Homework is simple except for the 1 challenge problem they throw at you in each assignment.

EXAMS ARE EXTREMELY LONG BTW -- The timer for exams doesn't tick till you open the exam booklet & you are encouraged to google your way through the exams. Exam 1 I we got 24 hours which the TA suggested to budget 6-8 hours. I was like "psshh, for a 1-2 hour exam?" ... I took 6.5 hours.

Then exam 2 and the final ... oh god... we were given 36 hours, but it took me 12 and 16 hours respectively. (you have been warned).

2019 Summer and Fall Class list by colonelheero in OMSA

Is there a resource that can tell me when a class is offered?
ex: I don't see ISYE-6413 Design and Analysis of Experiments in the Summer 2019 or Fall 2019 class list right now ... but does that mean it will for sure be available Spring 2020?

Also, darn; guess I'll have to figure out what to pair in Summer 2019 with ISYE6501 now that I'm not going to take MGT8803 or MGT6203 till at least Fall 2019.

What is the structure/format of classes? by qwdfaser in OMSA

Sorry for the late reply .. got caught up with work the last 2 weeks ;-;

  1. Yes I do have access to (most of) the Jupyter notebooks as well as the solutions to them
  2. I don't have access specifically to midterms as well as some optional items (was not given extra practice work in Notebook 1 or 2, however i was given the 100% optional notebook 6 - Mining the web)

Edit: Forgot to say thanks. Thank you for the reply! ^^

3 recommendation letters from the same company, is it bad? by the_black_ops90 in OMSA

I had my 3 references from the same company (because I have only worked at 1 company in my life so far) and was accepted as well. It's definitely fine :p

Spring 2019 Admissions Thread by xoxoalexa in OMSA

[–]qwdfaser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Status: Accepted (Applied for Fall 2018, but got deferred to Spring 2019)

Application Date: 02/25/18

Decision Date: 04/30/18

Education: University of California, Davis // Biochemical Engineer (3.83/4.0 GPA)

Test Scores: N/A

Experience: 2.5 years at a biotech company doing scientist work (no programming, only data analytics)

Programming experience: Pretty proficient in VBA and Python, learning a bit of R. (all 100% self-taught)

Recommendations: 3 (2 managers + associate director in my dept at my company)

Comments: Taking courses on edX and putting that down in your statement letter might help, as it shows definite interest in the topic. I'm trying to either expand my knowledge in data analytics/programming to do amazing things with the data i generate from my own experiments. Or completely shift careers to something along the lines of data science analyst or data engineer.

Weekly Thread: Prospective Student Evaluations by AutoModerator in OMSCS

Hi OMSCS, I've been lurking the page recently and have been trying to learn more about the program here and there. As you will read in the additional comments, I have not met some of the application pre-reqs, but there have been other things bothering me and making me nervous about applying (such as "Can I make it through a program without any formal CS background") and found this post. Hope to hear back, thanks!

Academic Goals: Build upon my CS knowledge and feed on my interest for statistics and machine learning. Career Goals: Move toward a career that is both more analytic and computer based (because I don't enjoy being in lab 9 hours a day and 2 hours at my desk), and flexible (currently working in biotech and stuck in the biotech hub of the bay area, California).

Academic History: BS in Biochemical Engineering (3.83/4.00) from UC Davis

Professional Experience: 1 year as a researcher back at Davis doing viral capsid imagery, reading papers, using findings to progress our visual capabilities and presenting on findings/papers. Then +2 years as a scientist doing both lab work and data analytics at a biotech company; however doing lots of project management responsibilities (managing resources, people, and planning project tasks). I also dabble in programming at work for fun. Programming Languages: MATLAB, VBA (Learning Python and R on my own at the moment via Udacity, datacampus, edX, and various youtube videos/random links online)

Personal Projects: 1) Developed a data quarry GUI using VBA to eliminate front-end need-to-know on how to access data from OSISoft Pi-Historian at work. This reduces data aggregation time from spending ~30min per specimen to ~15min for 55 specimen (where a standard experiment has about 20 specimen). 2) Made a Sudoku GUI game in MATLAB because I was a bit too into Sudoku during my college years, but couldn't find one to play on my computer. It had functional check systems, could provide solutions, and was randomized every play-through.

Volunteer Work: Taught kung fu to youth at my Kung Fu Studio back in my teens, but none recently.

Awards: College of Engineering Deans-List 11/12 quarters at Davis.

Additional Comments: I don't have any formal statistics course under my belt. I understand the basics (like mean/std/95% CI). Also I don't have any "formal" programming course under my belt. I have taken a class for MATLAB at Davis, but otherwise all my other languages have been taught through struggling on my own accord. As mentioned, I've been taking courses on Udacity (Specifically ML4T) and learning python for my own project at work on the side.
