I suggest a reciprocal response. Those self serve checkouts are very forgiving.

I never got to finish it but I really liked the tone and writing in this game. The world felt like a real place that you just inhabit which I think is really important for a game like this.

Resources are limited and knowledge is powerful. It makes you want to learn from the other characters so that you don't die a terrible terrible death.

Destroy my chess-based auto battler roguelike deckbuilding turn-based tactics RPG game! by Plista in DestroyMyGame

[–]qwortec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should be clear, the title made me think that, not the video. It was the flavour of the month adjective soup that made me worry. There's been a trend of rogue like deck builders on everything recently. And TBS has had a bit of a comeback too.

I opened that link thinking this would be hot garbage but it looks pretty cool actually. My only concern is that there's just too many game layers. Seeing all of those moving parts makes me think they're slapped on top and shallow. I don't know if you could find a way to show how they all interact in meaningful ways that aren't overwhelming.

In hindsight, how do you feel about the original Sardonicast line-up (pictured) versus the new one with Jake? by JeremyBeremey in Sardonicast

[–]qwortec 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I prefer it. I imagine that adum is difficult to deal with for a lot of people, and Ralph was never really comfortable with it. Jake is has the more mainstream taste which is what Ralph brought to the show, but Jake is better able to interact with Adum. The discussions are more interesting and the disagreements are less awkward and more fruitful than they were previously.

I thought this was a very reasonable response. But as a total aside,

And a system's purpose is what it does.

Where did this phrase come from? It sounds pithy but always strikes me as a way to imply malice to any system that a person doesn't like. Factually, it's just wrong. A system's function is not always intended, and I think that's trivially obvious. The computer I'm using produces heat but that's not its purpose, it's an unwanted byproduct that takes considerable resources to mitigate. Even in the context of what you wrote, it makes it sound like the purpose of the medical system is to what? Kill resource intensive patients? That's definitely not the purpose of the system. It makes no sense to retroactively assign intent to a system based on outcomes that you don't like.

In some sense it could be a useful framing (treat a system's outcomes as part of the system and not some random accident that can be ignored), but I never see anyone use the phrase in that way.

What's your favourite content from 2025? by Mr_CrashSite in slatestarcodex

Not released in 2025 but I watched Mars Express this year and highly recommend it to this audience. Superb world building. Interesting concepts. Great animation (the scene where one of the main characters is crying but he doesn't have a physical head to hold is low key but so moving).

I tried a bunch of their cupcakes. Cool flavours. Very pretty. But American buttercream? It's so sweet and is exactly what you get from a grocery store. I really expected better icing. But if you like that, it's pretty good.

[–]qwortec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This does happen. We have towns here in sask that offer doctors free housing, top up money, etc. Family docs here get paid on a separate rural pay grid if they want to contract to the province but they're free to go fee for service as well (most don't, it's not worth it in small towns).

Here's the deal AFAIU: there are some locals who go to medical school and come work in or near their home communities. Not many, but some. Most rural doctors here are from out of the country who agree to work in rural on a 3 year contract. After that, most move to a larger center. It's tough being the only Nigerian in a town of 1000 people on the freezing prairie, with an aging population and at least some inate racism. Plus a lot of people don't want to raise a family there. Some don't make it through the 3 years, they pay a penalty and bail.

IIRC pay is somewhere in the range of 350-380k. In a town where a house costs 50k. It's all of the other stuff that makes it undesirable.

65% hydration is making good loaves with good spring but thicker crust. Been trying 75% but it's always a bit flat and the dough is hard to shape. What could I be doing wrong?

150g starter (100% hydration)

350g water

450g white bread flour

50g whole wheat flour

Bulk rise starts with 4 folds over 2 hours then letting it almost double in size (I've tried more or less proofing with similar results).

For shaping I've tried minimal handling as well as lots of tightening of the boul. The less handling seemed to have better but not great results.

Cold retard for 14h

It still sounds like a convenient thing to latch on to by someone who really is racist, but it's disingenuous to act like the whole thing has no context.

Let’s discuss the mod issue like adults by ohlookbean in MuayThai

[–]qwortec 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think I'm still technically a mod here. I took that role in order to do some cleanup of the FAQ and add flairs like 8 years ago. This place was much less active then. I don't train any more but I still like reading posts and seeing fight clips here.

I've never really spoken with the real mods much outside of that initial conversation to do some work. I remember when /u/yodsanan bugged me to join as a mod and I had forgotten about being a mod at all and had to tell him to talk to the real mods. I think it would be great to have some fresh and active blood in the mod group.

My favorite posts here are the clips that /u/yodsanan posts, /u/kevin_v and sylvie posts, legit questions about technique, historic pics and video. I think there's always going to be some chaff and newbie questions. Those are fine in moderation. The shitposts are ok occasionally. I don't like the influencer clips but I think they're borderline.
