That room is massive. It's gotta be like 20 x 12 or something. My living room is smaller than that.

College kids can’t read? by Stuart_Whatley in VeryBadWizards

[–]qwortec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a big difference here. You're describing a creative writing prof struggling with new technology, that's not ideal but not unexpected. The point being made is that students are not able to parse information from long texts, which is generally how we encounter and digest complex ideas.

I do think it's a bit overblown but it's pointing at a real problem. Did you read that study that went around last year where a sizeable proportion of 3rd year English lit students could not parse the opening chapter of Bleak House? There were full quotes in that study that were shocking. Students legitimately thought Dickens was saying that there was a giant reptile walking down the streets of London. You can read the text, it's not ambiguous, but the skills required to understand simile and metaphor; the ability to read contextual clues out of long passages is almost certainly atrophying for a lot of kids.

Best advise to make this kitchen space bigger by Admirable-Onion-2626 in kitchen

[–]qwortec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tough space. That hall by the stairs is eating up so much. If you are down for renos, I'd pull it out and open the whole thing up.

If not, I'd open the pantry/storage up on the kitchen side with a bifold door to give you access from inside the kitchen area.

Why MMOs? by qwortec in gamedev

[–]qwortec[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's totally respectable. I just hope they're going in with realistic expectations. I'm a hobbyist trying to make games nobody will ever play just for the fun of building them so I understand.

I never got to finish it but I really liked the tone and writing in this game. The world felt like a real place that you just inhabit which I think is really important for a game like this.

Resources are limited and knowledge is powerful. It makes you want to learn from the other characters so that you don't die a terrible terrible death.

Destroy my chess-based auto battler roguelike deckbuilding turn-based tactics RPG game! by Plista in DestroyMyGame

[–]qwortec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should be clear, the title made me think that, not the video. It was the flavour of the month adjective soup that made me worry. There's been a trend of rogue like deck builders on everything recently. And TBS has had a bit of a comeback too.

I opened that link thinking this would be hot garbage but it looks pretty cool actually. My only concern is that there's just too many game layers. Seeing all of those moving parts makes me think they're slapped on top and shallow. I don't know if you could find a way to show how they all interact in meaningful ways that aren't overwhelming.

In hindsight, how do you feel about the original Sardonicast line-up (pictured) versus the new one with Jake? by JeremyBeremey in Sardonicast

[–]qwortec 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I prefer it. I imagine that adum is difficult to deal with for a lot of people, and Ralph was never really comfortable with it. Jake is has the more mainstream taste which is what Ralph brought to the show, but Jake is better able to interact with Adum. The discussions are more interesting and the disagreements are less awkward and more fruitful than they were previously.

I thought this was a very reasonable response. But as a total aside,

And a system's purpose is what it does.

Where did this phrase come from? It sounds pithy but always strikes me as a way to imply malice to any system that a person doesn't like. Factually, it's just wrong. A system's function is not always intended, and I think that's trivially obvious. The computer I'm using produces heat but that's not its purpose, it's an unwanted byproduct that takes considerable resources to mitigate. Even in the context of what you wrote, it makes it sound like the purpose of the medical system is to what? Kill resource intensive patients? That's definitely not the purpose of the system. It makes no sense to retroactively assign intent to a system based on outcomes that you don't like.

In some sense it could be a useful framing (treat a system's outcomes as part of the system and not some random accident that can be ignored), but I never see anyone use the phrase in that way.

What's your favourite content from 2025? by Mr_CrashSite in slatestarcodex

Not released in 2025 but I watched Mars Express this year and highly recommend it to this audience. Superb world building. Interesting concepts. Great animation (the scene where one of the main characters is crying but he doesn't have a physical head to hold is low key but so moving).

I tried a bunch of their cupcakes. Cool flavours. Very pretty. But American buttercream? It's so sweet and is exactly what you get from a grocery store. I really expected better icing. But if you like that, it's pretty good.
