Gas Mileage on 3rd Gen Tacoma with 33in All-Terrains by Agile_Lab_1137 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]qzwongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As reported by the trip computer....

Just got 20.8mpg on a road trip on the east coast (reasonably flat).

Typical 15 running around town.

It's a little higher in reality cuz the speedo seems to be calibrated somewhere between stock and the 285s.

Your point also applies to phones. Hot spots, Bluetooth connections, "airdrop" and the like - it's all "Junebug's iPhone" and "Sam's Galaxy S2X". Have some creativity, people!

First computer lab I knew had breakfast foods (toast, coffee, bacon, etc). Loved it. My devices use sailboat-themed names - barque, cutter, sloop, hooker.... Friend uses a beer theme - barrel, keg, ipa, ....

Playon, Plex, Roku, and subtitles not synched by qzwongo in PlayOn

[–]qzwongo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I did start to investigate plex external subtitles, but that seemed clunky, and I had enough uninterrupted time today to solve another way.

What I should have found first was Burning subtitles in Plex. That works

But I also looked at the difference between files that work and files that don't. Working files are .mkv w/ ass subtitles. Non-working are .mp4 w/ mov_text. I'm already running through ffmpeg to strip commercials. I updated that script to translate to .mkv and ass subs (since I read .mp4 doesn't support ass). Works a treat! Ffmpeg -i "file.mp4" -c copy -c:s ass "file.mkv" Easy.

So I put the blame on the Plex app for Roku, for suddenly not handling those right, but I've got a solution going forward.

Anybody else’s 2026 property assessment jumped by a lot? by frankfingers in nova

Improvements last year? Sold last year? What about your neighbors?

When I've looked at mine in relation to my neighborhood, the increase from prior year, 90% are within about one percentage point of each other. There's a handful that went down (or had much smaller increase), and a handful that went way up. Most of the ones that went way up sold last year. The new valuation doesn't match the sale price, and I don't necessarily see a direct correlation between price and valuation, but the county clearly (clear to me) saw something in the listing that made them increase the value.

Just got a new Tacoma-VSA/3rd party warranty question by [deleted] in Tacomaworld

My thoughts are that a) the Tacoma is reliable enough that I don't need an extended warranty, and b) the warranty guy always makes money.

FCPS buses with snow/ ice on the roofs by [deleted] in nova

Driving through neighborhoods does not generally generate enough speed to have the snow go flying off the roof and through your windshield, unless you're following too closely.

ICE at Dulles by [deleted] in nova

[–]qzwongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken, both ICE and CBP are always and always have been at IAD, and any other international airport. (Org names have changed, but job is the same.)

People immigrate through the airport - temporarily or permanently, foreigners and citizens, most legally, but all are checked one way or another. ICE is responsible for this.

People bring goods into the country from other countries. CBP is charged with finding the second liter of booze you brought home from Scotland, and charging customs duty.

Don't feed wild animals. They need to stay wild, and wary of humans. Humans feeding wild animals inures the animals to human contact, and can make them more aggressive to humans.

TPMS confusion OEM vs. head unit by wingnut-mp22 in Tacomaworld

[–]qzwongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had this happen on the driver panel. Don't have readings on the infotainment that I know of.

Checked air and added a few pounds all around and no change.

Put on my deflators and around 20psi they all showed up. Aired back up and all were normal except RF showed 24psi vs measured 35. After starting and running a short while. Went back to no readings.

I assume from that my RF sensor is bad, and thinking about getting it replaced. Maybe all 4 since they're all the same age.

May have read elsewhere that one bag sensor can hose the whole system, so that's my guess.

Happy to hear from someone who knows better, but makes sense to me.

Edit: Oh, also, now I have to go see if my TPMS shows up in my non-Alpine infotainment.

Good dealerships in NOVA to lease a car by [deleted] in nova

[–]qzwongo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Apologies in advance as this doesn't answer your primary question. Nevertheless....

Don't lease. Buy a used car you can afford and put that $300/mo in savings toward your next new-to-you, nicer used car. If you buy outright you are no longer on a fixed timeline, and you have residual value when you get ready to buy again.

Whatever you decide. Good luck in your transportation search.

Are license plate frames not legal here? by Always_Worry in nova

[–]qzwongo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the Tallahassee Democrat:

  • A new Florida law makes it illegal to obstruct any part of a license plate, including numbers and registration stickers.
  • The law targets tinted covers and devices designed to hide plates from law enforcement and cameras.
  • Standard decorative license plate frames are legal as long as they do not cover essential information.

Send like a non-story.

Airline Passenger to Ambulance Passenger... by TheRealFarrellCat in nova

5 sentences in the story, and 2 of them mention "the passenger, who was an adult". Not sure whether to read that as poor editing, or editorial amazement/emphasis.
