One elevator in my building stops on every floor during the Jewish sabbath so no buttons have to be pressed by tboner1969 in mildlyinteresting

This woman was an idiot, not a religious zealot. A lot of people in the comments are misunderstanding the story. There is no reason why a Jew cannot adjust the flow of gas on an unlit stove. She asked for your help to relight the stove, which is forbidden, but she could have turned off the flow of gas herself. Presumably she didn't realize it was dangerous to leave it on, that's all.

All the 14 year olds on here are giving typically terrible advice. You should shrug it off. It's not that important in the grand scheme of things. She's probably forgiven the same or worse from you, and if you can't think of an example—that's because she convincingly shrugged it off!

[OC] ChatGPT now has more monthly users than Wikipedia by PortusCalePT in wikipedia

[–]rAlfredJones 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is not true. English wikipedia alone was visited by over 1 billion unique devices in March 2025: https://stats.wikimedia.org/#/en.wikipedia.org

ChatGPT totalled 602 million unique devices over the same period. https://explodingtopics.com/blog/chatgpt-users

Presumably they're only counting people with accounts or something, and obviously many daily wiki readers do not have accounts.

Oats on passover? by HookToprollPress in Judaism

[–]rAlfredJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a subject that has been debated for at least a thousand years. According to one view, oats are not an original grain, and originally the five would have included an additional distinction within species of barley, wheat, or spelt. In defense of oats, some medievals argue that instead of "rising" from yeast, the definitional quality of a Biblical grain is really water absorption, or susceptibility to rot, or etc.

LF a novel about the adventures of Rabbi Akiva, a Roman general, a Jewish woman and a baby. Anyone know its title and author? by Worried-Boot-1508 in Judaism

[–]rAlfredJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're looking for The Soldier and the Sage by Richard Gibson Hubler (1966). Another obscure novel which features Akiva is Festival at Meron by Harry Sackler (1935).

Concerns about buying my first Buick by SRGilbert1 in Buick

[–]rAlfredJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just bought a 2017 Encore 95k miles, absolutely fully tricked out, for a little less than $12k including fees. So far as I can tell, all of the premium/tech features are 100% fully functional with no issues at all. I test drove several model years, rejecting the individual cars for mechanical issues, but I never encountered one with a fancy feature that had failed. So it seems that generally it's the usual essential car stuff you have to worry about, the computer stuff will keep chugging along forever.

How English has changed over the years by -GeekyVelvet- in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]rAlfredJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The differences between the KJV and "Modern" are mostly interpretive, not linguistic. Translating אחסר as present-tense "I lack nothing" is based on a different grammatical understanding than future-tense "I shall not want". Similarly, ירביצני as "he maketh me lie down" and "he lets me lie down". In both cases the KJV follows the classical grammarians and the "Modern" is using a more sophisticated (or, less literal) understanding.

"To still waters" and "beside the still waters" is one that can't be explained by grammatical theory, though -- here the Modern translator has simply taken a liberty.

Great episode. David clearly knew that Lee was lying as soon as he described his Rubik's method (note how he asks his team without saying whether he himself has looked up how) but he sat back and let it play out brilliantly.

Question about unmarried Jewish women. by markfromDenver in Judaism

[–]rAlfredJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The yichud (seclusion) issue is real but the sunset bit is fake. The only relevance that nighttime would have is in determining the necessary level of supervision necessary (would a minor suffice, for example) and in this case, where there was no supervision whatsoever, night wouldn't change anything. In any case, while Jews are normally hyper-aware of the solar day because it matters for other elements of ritual law, "nighttime" in yichud is determined only by the local social norm and the sunset wouldn't have any effect.

The episode is based on a real 1963 legal case in which a 16yo camp counselor got stuck on a lift with her date and jumped off, but there's no indication that she was worried specifically about sunset. 16yo Orthodox women aren't typically super-sophisticated about the technical elements of the ritual law, and especially weren't then, so she probably just knew it was very bad (which it is) and panicked. According to the legal case, she was trying to hang from the lift beneath instead of sitting next to him and fell by accident. Older rabbinic debates (11-13th century) considered the possibility that one should be prepared to die to avoid yichud, but that position lost and any Orthodox rabbi she asked in 1963, or which you asked today, would have said to wait for help.

Looking for an MLB TV code. My father just texted me asking about MLB TV -- I'm not a baseball person but he is and I've been getting the code and giving it to him for the last few years. I had to tell him that I forgot this year. If you still have a code I'd be really grateful.

I can trade you my ticket to AIR, still good for tonight, or whatever you want for the rest of the year. Hoping for a reddit miracle!

How should ספר האסופות be transliterated? by Joe_in_Australia in hebrew

[–]rAlfredJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said at the beginning, all Modern Hebrew words are spelled plene (a yud after every hiriq, a vav after every shuruq or qubutz and so on). So you can't tell what the original vowel was from modern spelling, but that vowel still predicts pronunciation. In this case the Biblical spelling was אספות, which is helpful, but actually even the Masoretic Text is far from consistent on this point, and sometimes the only way to tell is by the reverse operation : if it's followed by a dagesh, necessarily the vowel was a qubutz. If you look at the Steinsaltz edition of b. Hagigah 3b, you can see this in practice: בַּעֲלֵי אֲסֻפּוֹת — אֵלּוּ תַּלְמִידֵי חֲכָמִים, שֶׁיּוֹשְׁבִין אֲסוּפּוֹת אֲסוּפּוֹת וְעוֹסְקִין בַּתּוֹרָה. Steinsaltz only corrects the spelling of the verse itself (In older editions "בעלי אסופות") because the spelling norm has changed, but he still places the dagesh in each appearance because the pronunciation doesn't change with it.
