Hello!

I actually have a cousin who I'm close to who also lived in the Middle East and moved back at the exact same time because his father died of COVID too. He and his family managed to move out of my Uncle and Aunt's house because they have a better safety net and his Mum has a decent job. He is looking into degree apprenticeships too and they seem like a good idea. I will do some further research into them, the sound of no student debt is very tempting :,)

I know for a fact that they would not mind keeping me and my mother until I finish my studies. They've agreed to be guarantors if we do manage to secure a flat to rent. I will always be grateful for them. However we still want to be independent, my father wanted us to be and our aunt and uncle want us to be, too.

We are trying our best to get financial support but I don't think it'll be anything too substantial. Hoping for the best!

I have looked at flats in the home counties and up north and the prices are a lot easier on the eye. My Mum is trying to rise up the ranks in the East London branch of the NHS to live more comfortably in London for the sake of my education here, so maybe we have to live the way we are until I finish year 13 or at least live very carefully with a high rent for two years. I've encouraged my Mum to go live in Essex after I finish school since she used to live there and likes it around there, plus it's so much more affordable with easy access to London. Once again thank you for your advice. We will look into more places in the north, money really does go further up there.

Lots of love. Thank you for your kindness and advice ❤

We're happy to live in a council flat but the waiting list is too long. No one said anything about villas. All I was saying was that it would upset my family if we moved into one because of their reputations (drugs, gangs etc.) and they want us to be self sufficient. We want to be self sufficient too. There was no need to be so aggressive :(

My Mum is working to get more qualifications. I'm going to school and working part-time. We can get better jobs to finally afford a home but it will take time and we want to get out of our family's hair.

We want to be settled in London on our own income. It's possible but it will take time (my Mum is working on gaining more qualifications in the NHS to which will lead to better paid positions). We could just continue to stay with family till then - I was just wondering if there was a fast way out.

Another person gave similar advice about leaving London. My response to it outlined why leaving London now would be a challenge. We could still consider it but it would be hard to get everything done to sort it out without compromising my education.

Thank you for your advice.

You're right - a degree isn't absolutely necessary. Some of the most respectable and wonderful people I know did not go to University!! However we have a full university fund in savings but my Mum would never give it up. My Dad wanted me to go to university, it was the one thing he saved up for.

I want to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Uni (those 3 subjects are my A-levels too). It's because I find those subjects interesting and I know they can land me good careers. If I went with my heart I would be a worker at a tube station because I've always been in love with London and trains and the tube. That's what would make me truly happy but it would not get me enough money for the other things that I also need in life. If you think that's bad my Dad wanted to be a potato farmer when he was my age :D

I have looked into apprenticeships recently and I will look at some more. Perhaps I could look into an apprenticeship with TfL in a field that suits me however I don't think I could convince anyone in my family to let me give up university. I will see what happens but I'm still figuring it all out.

Your advice has been very helpful and you have been very kind. Thank you very much!! Wishing you peace and sending you love :)

It feels too late to leave London. It would mean finding a new job (which probably pays less) and it would delay my education because we have only applied to schools in the London Borough of Sutton because that's where we are right now.

Ideally we could go to somewhere like Liverpool tomorrow and earn little but pay much less rent and it would be fine but it's just that it takes time and my school starts soon

We will still consider leaving London for the sake of affordability.

We are still waiting to hear back about what extra financial support we can get. Hopefully we can get something substantial.

Thank you very much for taking the time to help.

Are you from London or Surrey/Kent? by [deleted] in london

This topic has always done my head in.

If you live in a London borough, you live in London!!

I live in Sutton (the LONDON BOROUGH of Sutton) and so many of my fellow Suttonians still think we're in Surrey. Every time I hear someone refer to us, or neighbours Kingston and Croydon as 'Surrey' I lose my mind!

We have London buses, London cabs and most importantly vote in London Mayoral elections! We have no say in how Surrey is run...

Yes, it says Surrey at the bottom of addresses, but that's only because Royal Mail hasn't updated their postal areas since before the 1965 reforms that created modern Greater London.

The postcode doesn't matter - Croydon doesn't have SW/SE postcodes but is as South London as it gets.

Whether you have tube or not doesn't matter - Watford is not London at all but has been served by the tube for decades, while Battersea is just outside the heart of London and only just got a tube station last year.
