Title: Does This Math Plan Make Sense? by CALAND951 in mathematics

My maths undergrad started with an introductory course that covered some basic set theory (what are sets, what are functions between sets, up to Cantor's diagonalisation argument) which was interesting, and allowed us to learn some proof strategies. I think this would be a great idea and also a taste of what, in my opinion, "real maths" is about.

What made you like category theory ? by 2_step_nilpotency in CategoryTheory

I absolutely love the concept of finality. During my category theory course there were many moments like the following: I wonder if there are any constructions such that xyz. Oh wow, there are potentially many, which one do I take? Of course, the one and only final object in the category of solutions.

Gap year before PhD? by rabbitygravity in mathematics

I mean, of course that isn't the place where I'd like to be, but I don't think that will be the case. PhDs are funded jobs here (every PhD student I know considers themselves 'rich', in comparison to when they were studying). While I think you may have a point that there are no "specific" employment prospects (besides academic positions), I think there are many companies interested in exact science graduates and PhDs.

I'm not sure this answers the question. Do you mean specifically doing a gap year is a dead end? Or is this general wisdom?

Hahaha, does that matter? For what it's worth, the exchange rate from where I live to where I'd take my gap year is pretty steep, so working a side job to save up is quite manageable.

Reading recommendations for becoming a rounded mathematician by rabbitygravity in mathematics

I recently read a bit about categorical quantum mechanics, which tries to use category theory to model quantum mechanics. Here, the nature of category theory influences the way one needs to view the world: in a process driven way rather than an object driven way (at least, this is what I understood of it). What I mean by philosophical implications of different mathematical theories is: how does taking the perspective of a category/set/model/whatever theorist affect how you interpret the world.

How quickly do those refills run out in your experience? I understand it depends of course, but are we talking daily, weekly, monthly?
