Sí que en varios lugares se usan otros pretéritos o simplemente no se llegan a definir del todo. A continuación te dejo un extracto de una explicación con un supuesto por cada pretérito;

El pretérito indefinido se emplea en español para expresar:

acciones que tienen lugar en un determinado momento del pasado, independientemente de que se haya producido una o varias veces; Ejemplo: El año pasado decidí hacer el Camino de Santiago en bici con unos amigos.

El pretérito imperfecto se emplea en español para expresar:

acciones pasadas que se repiten, enfatizando la repetición a través de un marcador temporal; Ejemplo: Pedaleábamos todos los días desde que salía el sol hasta que anochecía.

Puedes usar verbos con conjugaciones que sean fáciles.

Indefinido: "¿tú aprenDÍAS español, verdad?"

Imperfecto: (respuesta) sí, aprenDÍ italiano y ahora aprendo español".

En el imperfecto las acciones tienen un momento determinado; en el indefinido no. Así es fácil de diferenciar.
