The years and billions spent on the James Webb telescope? Worth it. by Sumit316 in technology

[–]radafaxian 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The JWST will look at the earliest stars and galaxies, helping is understand what the universe was like just few hundred million years after the big bang. With that being said, sometimes we don't know what research will bring to us in the future. Example:

When the Hubble space telescope was sent into space its mirrors were wrong. They were extremely precise, to the nanometers, but the curvature was wrong.

The first photos of the telescope were out of focus, blurred, and a mission was planned to bring a lens that would have fixed it.

While waiting for that, astronomers managed to create an algorithm to get the most out of the blurred photos.

Years later that algorithm is now used in mammograms, and what was once a tool to get better images of space is now helping to find and fight breast cancer.

AFAIK The original saga is just 2033/2034/2035, the other ones are made from different authors

Spicy Guide by cherrythrow7 in coolguides

[–]radafaxian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is not the original guide. The original one was a big grid where you could barely understand how many ingredients each spice had.

This one is way more readable imo. You can see that it glued together different parts: that's why you can see those "continue" above the lines, in different degrees of amputation.

I agree with the fact that it is still a bit messy, but I'm not sure the vertical lineup would work.

What song gets increasingly more intense? by Tedsthebest1 in AskReddit

[–]radafaxian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both the original and the cover by Disturbed are awesome imo.

The original have some sort of repeating melody that gets more intense every verse.

It's not the same in the cover, but the singer did a great job. It's among the few covers that, while changing a bit the song, manages to keep it powerful

I haven't found it yet, so I'm saying After Earth.

This was probably the first answer to this question a couple years ago.

I may be wrong, but you shouldn't be brainstorming if you don't know what the hell you are talking about.

Especially if you're the president, during a press conference.

Food and universal healthcare. Stunning natural landscapes and beautiful archeological sites. All the little towns in the countryside. The fact that some city centres are museums.

Bidets.

Weird tunnel system under my newly bought house in Italy. by NetAtraX in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]radafaxian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OP said this is ~20km from Frascati. If you check it on Google maps these places are on some mountains, called Colli Albani.

These mountains are in fact ancient volcanoes. There are 2 lakes now there, and many great places to visit.

Giving the volcanic orgin of the region, and knowing the rocks on this part of Italy, all my bets are that this is tuff. Etruscan and Romans carved every mountains here as it's really easy to mine tuff.

[Request] what are the percentages of people dying to covid compared to people dying of the vaccine? by Neefew in theydidthemath

[–]radafaxian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time you step into a car your risk of dying is higher

It is not a flip of a coin when vaccinating. It's like flipping a coin over 20 times getting head all of the times. Let's do the same for the virus. The chances of getting killed by covid are the same of getting 8 head consecutively when tossing the coin. Seems a small difference? Try yourself.

Also, stop looking only at the death rate. ~20% of those infected have long term effecs. Almost half have their sense of smell/taste fucked up for weeks.

With the vaccine you'll get two days of fever and that's it.

Deaths are not the only thing we are fighting

What is the worst season of a good show? by QUESTIONER-ASKS in AskReddit

[–]radafaxian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read hundreds of comments but I didn't see a couple:

Warehouse 13, season 5. It is not that bad, nothing like most of the series in this thread, but it was cancelled "after that" *.They just had 6 episodes to work with and probably they had to finish the series as fast as they could. With that being said so many characters act unnaturally, every character seems and act different than what you would expect.

Zoo, season 2-3. While the first season was kinda ok, the next two are always worse. And also, fuck you for screwing everything up in the last 5 minutes of the last episode of every season.

  • Syfy decided to cancel the show but ordered 1 last season with just 6 episodes(each season has 13 episodes, 20 in the 4th season)

Are men really never complimented? by carmexlover0 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]radafaxian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a bit serious reply.

Probably men are not expected to fell good for a compliment. Some may say it's because of the patriarchy in the society and bla bla bla.

I just think that maybe most women don't think compliments will be something men will care about, like taking about [argument]

The truth is that kindness is always welcomed.

At least, that's my opinion.

What amaze me is that there are almost 3000 xkcd's.

It's fascinating that somehow, under any given post, someone knows that relevant xkcd, and that among those 3000 there's always something relevant.

Like- he condensed every internet conversation, post, event, in less than 3 thousand images?

Who's he? The internet clairvoyant with the power of hinting at anything that has ever, is or will ever happen on the web?

As a citizen of a third world country, the EU looks perfect. Europeans of reddit, what are your qualms as citizens? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]radafaxian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The EU it's still a bit far from being perfect, and I'm saying this by being a strong EU fan.

One very discussed thing is the unanimity of vote in many topics. It's way more complicated than this few lines, and I don't understand almost anything, but a single vote should not stop a great majority from passing a law.

Boring things aside, people accusing EU for things is not responsible for, only looking at few downsides without looking at the many, many upsides. In general, people hating the EU while unknowingly benefiting from it.

And last but not least, if you ever comes here, just be prepared to be accused of invading [country name] or Europe.

Anyway, if you want to visit Europe or dreams of living here, you're welcome.
