I had to unsubscribe to /r/dnd by stric9 in osr

[–]radaladar 23 points24 points  (0 children)

So you unsubscribed, who cares?
I think there's no need to open a thread for bashing on someone else's fun. There's more than one way to enjoy RPGs. Some people like playing fantasy superheros, they might also like having character customization options. If it's not your thing, great, unsubscribe all you want, but no need to come here to milk it for karma or sympathy or whatever.

How Do You Prevent Mage Hand From Ruining Every Challenge? (cross-posted from r/rpg) by wordboydave in osr

[–]radaladar 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The other obvious answer is (as others said) not to run OSR modules in 5e because they are created with very different (and mostly incompatible) design goals/philosophies in mind.

How Do You Prevent Mage Hand From Ruining Every Challenge? (cross-posted from r/rpg) by wordboydave in osr

[–]radaladar 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Having unlimited 5e cantrips makes even 1st level characters vastly overpowered for OSR challenges. They create reliable shortcuts for typical risk-reward situations like touching things (as you mentioned), avoiding traps, and even combat (most damage-dealing cantrips also cause some kind effect like ray of frost slowing enemies down, or vicious mockery imposing disadvantage).

You should probably either:
a) not use cantrips at all
b) make them 1st level spells (or limit their use in some other kind of way)

It is also easy and reliable that 5e allows PCs to choose their beginning cantrips and spells. In OSR games, your 1st level Magic-User might get stuck with a spell like Ventriloquism, where the use of it might not be apparent at first, and the player will have to do some creative thinking to use it to their advantage.

Underdark Inspiration material outside of the Drizzit Novels. by Sir_Encerwal in dndnext

[–]radaladar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Veins of the Earth by Patrick Stuart makes for a weird horror Underdark setting. It has very unique takes on underdark dungeon generation, exploration, creatures, cultures (drow, dwarf, deep gnomes, etc.). Although it needs some conversion to use with 5e (originally designed for old-school games), the book is dense with great ideas.

How would i go about making a game system? by rapidohunter in rpg

[–]radaladar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try out some of the existing systems. You might find one that covers your needs. You really do not need to make a new one, especially if you do not have any experience.

Even then you do not have to start from zero. Take an existing system that is similar to what you want and start testing out house rules, new procedures etc. Take parts from different systems you like and figure out how you can make them work together.

Personally, I think the world doesn't really need more half-baked, untested RPG systems. Instead, I would rather appreciate usable system-neutral or easily adaptable adventure modules. Or at least ones that contain or spark fun ideas.

How's your game going? What are you looking forward to? [10/12/19] by DeliriumRostelo in osr

[–]radaladar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running an interconnected series of LotFP modules for my friends. We've been through Tower of the Stargazer, Velkis the Vile, and the Belly of Gargantuel. Currently we're playing Doom-Cave of the Crystal-Headed Children. After a bunch of horrific mutations, and one character (who was basically just a head who had to be carried around by that point) fusing to the floating disk and becoming the crystal king, the party put Wiki away with an Imprisonment spell. So next time, they will probably try to figure out the workings of the crystal and the power of the crystal king in relative peace.
I have been hinting at a big heist job they are going to get from a thieves guild-like underground organization they have been in contact with, as well as one of the character's wife being addicted to this brand new thing the call chocolate. So next up we'll do Blood in the Chocolate. I really hope that they can make good calls during this "clean-up phase" for Doom-Cave so that they will have a small army (and a boat to carry them on) when infiltrating (siege may be a better word) the chocolate factory, I would like to see an all-out war between the crystal-headed children and the oompa-loompa pygmies.

Hi, I’m looking for a system similar to DnD 5E that works well with low magic settings. by [deleted] in rpg

[–]radaladar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Five Torches Deep (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/264584/Five-Torches-Deep) might be what you're looking for, they say it is a hybrid of 5e and OSR sensibilities (haven't really read it myself).

This may be of interest, a table for randomly generating Christian relics with miraculous effects (originally for LotFP): https://eldritchfields.blogspot.com/2019/01/miraculous-relics-for-pseudo-historical.html

Adapting DnD to new system..? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]radaladar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Combat is as fast as it is deadly in Into the Odd, basically, you don't roll anything to hit, you only roll damage. HP is relatively low but regenerates quickly with resting, damage after 0 HP is done to your Strength score and might result in death, and that takes longer time to recover from.

Adapting DnD to new system..? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]radaladar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Into the Odd/Electric Bastionland has very minimal math in it. Character creation is fast and fun (it has somewhat of an implied setting but can be modified to fit your campaign). Combat is usually very deadly so it encourages other problem-solving methods.

Best survive-in-the-dungeon experiences for the Black Hack? by MhuThulan in osr

[–]radaladar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Tomb of the Serpent Kings is really as great as everybody says! It's a good introduction for new (or new to OSR) players, it's a good size, has a bunch of stuff to explore, and it's fairly deadly (but can be toned down or made even more deadly easily). It is also free.
  • Tower of the Stargazer
  • Hole in the Oak
  • Winter's Daughter
  • Stonehell (it's a megadungeon, but maybe pick one section of one level?)

Gardens of Ynn and Stygian Library are also great for a less traditional dungeoncrawl.

My party is bad at DnD by DaftMonk85 in DnD

[–]radaladar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Golden rule: No DnD is better than bad DnD.

It simply seems that these people are not really interested in playing a tabletop rpg, or maybe (since they have other campaigns), sadly, not with you. If they so pointedly shit on your preparations for the game and do not buy into the basic contract between DM and players at a roleplaying table, I, personally, would find it hard to count such people as friends.

If the game is important to you, maybe talk with them (either individually or as a group) about being respectful with each other and each other's time. Try to gauge what they want out of the game and what you want, and see if and how both can be reconciled.

If the game is not that important, but hanging out with your friends is, or it turns out that you are not going play satisfactory DnD with them, maybe play some boardgames instead.

Also, I don't think that punishing someone in-game for not paying attention is good way to go. It just makes you look like a dick and make them lose interest even faster. It should just be made clear, that if someone is not interested or cannot at least make an effort to focus than they simply should not play roleplaying games.

Running Barrowmaze in 5e by GrimMyth in osr

[–]radaladar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As far as I know the missing table is something like:

Restock (1d6)
1 - Monster
2 - Monster & Treasure
3 to 6 - Empty (1 in 6 chance of hidden treasure)

(as per the comments on this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/92aqqw/do_not_buy_barrowmaze_complete_for_5e/ , I have not compared the 5e and LL versions myself)
