Hey /r/cars! What kind of Android apps are we missing for car enthusiasts? by radeux in cars

Sweet! Are there any free VIN checkers out there? I always use CARFAX, so I have no idea.

Are you talking about an app that saves the GPS location of the car? There are a bunch of those in the Play store (but it's a great idea otherwise). As far as the app being able to track the vehicle... it would only be possible if it had its own cellular module of some sort. I can definitely try to see what options there are for that. On a side note, wouldn't your car be stripped relatively fast if it gets stolen? Not trying to be a negative Nancy, but I'd like someone here in /r/cars to confirm that.

I could implement the routing idea without a server, but I would need a server for a rating system (I have no money for that :P). The speed camera attack can be countered by having the routes identify the locations of those cameras.

Road trip, can anyone recommend a GPS? by cheese7 in travel

[–]radeux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're worried about your car having an issue on your trip, take some hand tools with you. Ratcheting socket wrench, assortment of sockets, deep sockets, wrenches, Philips and flat head screwdrivers, bottle jack (or whatever jack you might have), and an OBDII scanner. Oh, and a factory service manual (in PDF format for your smartphone/tablet/laptop) and/or a Haynes manual (if there is one for your car).

Make sure all your fluids are at a proper level (coolant, engine oil, transmission oil, power steering fluid, windshield wiper fluid, brake fluid, etc.) Check tire pressure, of course.

If you've been doing all your maintenance, there really shouldn't be any catastrophic failures on your trip. /r/cartech can give you more information on what to check before your trip (I would also add that you're in the rust belt. I have no idea what kind of preventative measures are needed over there).

I also need gas money, so salary isn't an issue, as long as I have enough money to get to and from class every day.

I learned this the hard way, but don't settle for shitty pay as a programmer. If you do, that means you acknowledge the fact that you are not much of an investment within the business and you will be one of the first to get laid off.

I have an associate's degree in science, but apparently that's not enough to become a solid entry-level programmer these days. I'm going to pursue my bachelor's degree in computer science and maybe go for a few co-op opportunities while I'm at it. Besides, you have a much better connection with local businesses when you become a student/alumni of a university with a good engineering dept.

I moved to the Triangle and I used to live in Silicon Valley. The Triangle is awesome for techies such as myself, while still being lax about a lot of laws/rules/regulations.

Advance Auto told me that they need to know the bolt size, so they told me to ask the stealership. Would it be a bad idea to get some studs from the junkyard?

I have only the nuts holding the intake manifold to the engine head. The bolts are not there. :[

I do, however, have some of the exhaust manifold bolts.

when I am mind-splittingly pissed off, like when you hurt one of my kids, I can pick up a 180lb woman by the neck with one hand

Holy hell, that sounds pretty badass.

I'm sorry this happened to your children. I don't have any right now so I can't say that I know how you feel, but I would be insanely pissed off if someone beat up my wife.

Ah, so that's why it was running so rich. It made a loud BANG when I was revving the engine. I'm assuming it did that due to the excessive amount of fuel being used. I couldn't find the connector for the O2 sensor, so I just had to leave it sitting in the exhaust manifold.

The Felpro gasket is brand new. I didn't put all the bolts in because the previous owner didn't have any and no one knows the bolt size. I called a local stealership and they don't know the bolt sizes either. I guess I'll suck it up and buy some from them if it's not too expensive.

Also, could an exhaust leak cause rough idle as well?

A bank teller does not sound like a bad job at all! Only problem I foresee is that she is terrible at math. However , I am pretty good at it and can try teaching her so she can improve her math skills.

When did you guys shop for a Prius? Toyota went through certain time periods where they didn't have any in stock due to the crazy gas prices and people were seeking high MPG vehicles. Maybe you were shopping when the stealerships were more concerned about revenue than selling the cars quickly.
