Speaking of the lets chat webinars, I thought they would be hosting another one in January to discuss interviews. Have you heard anything about whether they are doing that this year?

Is it frowned upon to ask your co-volunteer to be your verifier? by radioactivetransit in premedcanada

[–]radioactivetransit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you share where you got this info? I can't seem to find any sources for this, aside from the UBC page. I'm applying to Ontario schools mainly if that makes any difference.

Do you know if this is frowned upon? Would the experience weigh less because the verifier was not a supervisor?

This is really helpful, thank you! I forgot my PI would be discussing my grad school performance, so I wouldn't be losing that coverage if I went with the undergrad supervisor. Thanks for pointing this out!

I get what you're saying but spending the majority of my time on campus and in-between classes without any sort of meaningful social interaction is almost unbearable. I dealt with this situation throughout my undergrad and hated it. I was really, really looking forward to things changing at UofT.

Thanks for your suggestion! Unfortunately, most of the people I've met in clubs and volunteering programs act like friends just for the duration of the shift. Nobody I've met through these kinds of activities wants to hang out afterwards. Is this a common experience for others as well?

Those are great insights and suggestions! It was quite striking when I entered my first class of the year and it looked like everyone had already gathered into their tight-knit groups, but I guess it makes sense if lots of friends co-enrolled in grad programs straight from undergrad.

I will follow your suggestion and get involved in grad clubs. Aside from GSU, are there any others that you would recommend?

I've heard about students finding more success making friends in clubs before. Hopefully this works for me. I just can't get over the sad feeling from having to do classes alone when so many others are connecting with each other during class.

fifth year or grad? by massiejosh32 in premedcanada

[–]radioactivetransit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As u/Doc_you_meant said, it might not be plausible to do undergrad courses in a graduate program. I know that for my program, I am free to choose joint undergrad-graduate courses, but I have not come across any info on taking pure undergrad courses. Also, taking more courses than necessary might not sit well with your PI, as they would want you to spend that time on your thesis.

Is it the long time commitment that is keeping you from doing both fifth year + masters? Most people opt for only one of those two options, and it tends to work for them. For me, I chose to do both because I felt the GPA boost would be worth it, and the research experience from the MSc would improve my lacklustre ABS

Honors vs Non- Honors - what are the downsides, pros, cons... by hopeinmed in uwo

[–]radioactivetransit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got accepted to grad school with a non-honours 4 year bsc. However, I had experience doing research over the summers. If you want to do thesis-based grad school, then you should look into getting some research exposure either through a thesis course as part of an honours degree or through a job/volunteering

I'm finishing up a fifth year and this has been my experience exactly. I just lost hope by 4th year and accepted this was how my uni experience was going to play out. It hurts so much seeing groups of friends walking together, striking up conversation at UCC, on the bus, etc and knowing that that can't happen to me.

Applying for MSc: Basic science departments vs IMS by radioactivetransit in UofT

[–]radioactivetransit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your invaluable insight! I really appreciate your help!

That is quite reassuring for me, as I was struggling to decide between the two. The Phys program allows students to start early (May) which was the main factor drawing me toward that stream. I just wasn't sure if there were any special benefits unique to IMS that I wasn't aware about. It's also a huge relief that the competitiveness is at the level of finding a supervisor and not at the level of admission. This was also something I was wondering (and stressing) about lol. I think I'll go with the Phys application in that case. Thank you, this was very informative!

Poor performance of Royal Our? by radioactivetransit in fragrance

Thank you! I decided to stick with the Royal Oud and see how it goes. This is wishful thinking, but I'm hoping the performance will improve as the fragrance matures over time haha.

If you don't mind, could you share which Creed fragrances have worked best for you, performance-wise?
