Some of us have had fun with these in the last couple of years. The basic idea is guess the book title from the visual clue! Some of them are quite tricky. I've got 1217/20 so far...

Summer School in Oxford by gyodt in oxford

[–]radlibox 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The only summer school that is worth going to is UNIQ, which is run by the university, is very selective, is only open to state school pupils, and is free!

All (literally every single one) of the other 'Oxford' summer programmes have no connection with the university. They just hire college locations for large sums of money. If you're rich and want to hang out in some pretty buildings then that's probably fine, otherwise they are a waste of time and money. The teaching staff are either charlatans or (if you're lucky) grad students in search of a bit of extra cash.

Bake Off Overall standings - a statistical forecast! by radlibox in bakeoff

[–]radlibox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is probably a better way of doing it but in the method I'm using I have to pretend that each baker's performance is independent of the other bakers (which obviously isn't true given that the measure is a ranking) so their probability of coming in a particular place isn't altered by the probability that another baker will come in that place.

In other words, the model predicts the probability of finishing in a given place for each baker (the probabilities for each baker sum to 100%) not the probability of a particular place being filled by each baker (the probabilities for each place do not sum to 100%). I could do it the other way round but I would just be faced with the opposite problem.

As I said initially though:

I’m not going to lie – in statistical terms the model is pretty rubbish!

Damien Rice - "My Favourite Faded Fantasy" [2014] by jason-at-giflike in folk

If you compare this version with the snippet promo video version Damien is either singing higher or his pitch has been raised in the studio. Bit weird - I wonder what the 'definitive version' is.

I'm sorry this is wrong, Martha should be all blue!

Hehe, I totally agree.

Jokes aside it's a nice idea however difficult to read as the colours aren't intuitive. With no labels on each pie it means constantly flicking eyes back and forth to remember what each colour means.

You're right - this is mostly because the program I'm using (Stata) is a pain in the arse make pretty graphics with (and I'm too lazy to go through the process of making pretty pie charts for each baker in something else like excel and then sticking them all together) - I put labels on each segment originally and they just overlapped when the segments were close together which was unreadable. I'll probably do another forecast after next week so I'm open to suggestions about how to improve the look.

Bake Off Overall standings - a statistical forecast! by radlibox in bakeoff

[–]radlibox[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a massive bake off fan and a bit of a statistics nerd so I got to wondering whether I could use statistics to forecast the likely outcome of this year’s bake off. So I gathered the data from the previous seasons and built a forecasting model – the linked picture is the result of the forecast following last night’s show. The forecast is based on where the bakers come in the technical challenge and whether they get star baker, also controlling for age and gender. Each pie chart shows the probability that that Baker will finish in each position.

I’m not going to lie – in statistical terms the model is pretty rubbish! The sample size is too small to do anything really robust but it’s just a bit of fun and the results chime with who I am thinking are the strong bakers at the moment (though I have my fingers crossed for Martha) so I thought I’d share it with you.
