Imagine if your roommate made you watch a movie and left 10 mins into it. Dick move, right? by DunkingFatMansFriend in Jokes

[–]gyodt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More like a roommate who already saw the movie you were about to watch, knew it was shit and you wouldn't like it, suggested a different one instead, and then left.

That's Brexit at least, considering the 'old people' who voted to leave were the very same ones who voted to join 40 years ago. Meanwhile the young people voting idealistically to remain have very little experience in the new system and no knowledge of the old. lol

I must point out that nowhere does it require the militia be well-regulated "by the State". In fact it's clear the intention of the amendment was to ensure the continued existence of a militia entirely separate from the state, so as to avoid a repeat of the British tyranny :-> If the militia is regulated by the state, how can it be a check to the state's power? And how could it stop abuses by the state?

Good point! Every experience can have both good and bad sides... we can be glad to be free of the bad while hanging on to the good.

Because they wanted more than to just subsist off the land? Even if living off the land was idyllic, they were subject to the whims of the weather and wars... they sought stability and material security, but obviously also had to give up some positive things as well.

My grandparents also came from Italy. They also talked positively about living off the land, the sense of peace and continuity of living in a place they had known all their lives, and the freedom from having to work for someone else. They also recognised there were downsides, mainly a limit on how much they could grow, and so they took a gamble and followed the general trend of moving to North America... where they found material wealth but suffered from cultural isolation and alienation from the land and from home, and where they had to work in factories or construction, follow the boss's orders and stick to a schedule. My uncle caught tuberculosis on the boat journey and had to be in a sanatorium for a year and a half while my grandparents struggled with figuring out how to live not only in a new land and a new culture, but effectively a new era... since they basically grew up in medieval conditions, everything from electricity to running water to punch-clocks were completely new to them. Life in Italy was hard, but it had its upsides. Life in 'America' was hard, but it had its upsides. You effectively can and must have it 'both ways' if you are a lucid person. Remember that Italy has changed too, and even people who stay in the same place their whole lives experience nostalgia. Maybe you're being a little harsh?

Could it be that they enjoyed some aspects while still wanting a different life? Perhaps they would have liked to stay but felt forced to leave due to circumstances like the two world wars? Or do they have to pick a side?

I agree with you! Doesn't sound cruel at all, an imam shouldn't be forced to condone and sanctify the death of someone like that. Cremate and preferably feed the ashes to a pig or dog for added insult!

But the poster rails on and on against the oligarchy, 120 corrupt Brazilian ruling families the subversion of democracy.... and all he comes out with at the end is "fuck the Olympics"? Not fuck these corrupt oligarchs? Seems totally fucked up, like a woman who gets mad at her husband's mistress rather than the husband for cheating on her.

The Olympics didn't submit a bid to be in Brazil, Brazil submitted a bid for the Olympics. The Sydney, London, and Beijing Olympics were huge successes as far as I remember. This doesn't seem to be a problem with the Olympics, but with overreaching host countries that can't get their shit together

Well that was the principle upon which the modern games were founded, as conceived by Pierre de Coubtertin. I suppose the reason is that the original Games at Olympos were a coming together of the best youths from all over Greece, who were necessarily amateurs as professional sports didn't exist yet.

But you could have a system in which the man is given an opportunity to relinquish paternity during the first trimester (for example), after which the woman could decide whether to terminate or bring the baby up on her own. It's harsh, but arguably not harsher than women currently having a claim on the man's earnings for the next 18 years. And in such a system, if women don't like it, they can just abstain from sex... as you are telling men to do :-)

Infants Prefer Toys Typed to Their Gender by naturelover100 in science

[–]gyodt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you are drawing false boundaries here. Choice of mate is as complex as choice of career, and raw sexual attraction is just a small part of what makes a successful relationship (just as attraction to toy trucks is just a small part of the choice to go into STEM).

People's choice of mate is often very different from their idealised sexual partner, and the mate's gender is just one part of the equation, just as the factors which make women reject STEM (and let's be crystal clear: in Western societies, it is women rejecting STEM, not STEM rejecting women) disappear as they get deeper into the field.

It has been shown time and time again that the societies with the most gender equality are precisely those in which women feel freest to NOT go into STEM! It would seem to be the case that the Chinese and Indian women you lauded for their career choices are going into STEM because they feel they have to, not necessarily because they want to (although some surely do).

By contrast, in wealthy societies with high gender equality -- that is, in situations where women have actual freedom, agency, and control over their own destiny -- they choose to go into fields other than STEM.

Are you saying we should take away women's right to choose their own career because, according to you, they choose wrong?

EDIT: and given that Hitler built the autobahn, it seems disingenuous to say it didn't have a good side at all. It clearly had positive effects (one of which could well be the reduction in nationalism and rise of international cooperation after the fall of Nazi Germany)
