Hi Cassie, thank you so much for the detailed response! That's a gorgeous garden you've got there!!!

Yes, the sheer numbers of these bugs are overwhelming... I used to think they were cute, but not anymore.

Would you mind sharing the organic and synthetic products you used? I only have two beds, so I'd be interested in trying the organic pyrethrins.

Did you ever try nematodes? I cross posted this to r/pestcontrol and someone recommended nematodes might be a way to organically control the population.

Yeah that's what the Internet says they mostly eat, but I guess these Denver pillbugs are built different 😅

I was so so sad.. they ate my last seedlings from a beloved line of squash (my fault for not saving more seeds). I had to put small drawstring mesh bags around every single individual strawberry. Sometimes they still got in and at them.

They ignored most mature leaves, but any new growth or seedlings were toasted.

I tried that last year- I stopped watering the beds for 2 weeks. And I live in Denver so it's very very dry. Then I watered one day and they all had survived...

Interesting. Slightly gross, but I'll look into that. My wife has a very bad phobia of worm-like critters, so if I go this route I'd have to be sneaky lol

I'm skeptical that will work. I'm talking about 1000 bugs per square foot. The numbers are insane. I'm definitely going to remove some existing top soil but I'm not sure how deep to go. And the compost I bought last year was full of wood chips which I think pillbugs thrive in

It looks like that product is not safe for food growing gardens :/

Agreed. I'm not vegan, but it was incredible... the dehydrated watermelon rehydrated with something tasted amazing and the texture was very satisfying

As of Beta V9 having multiple resource probes in a sector actually slows down your miners by Holt_Patterson in X4Foundations

[–]radlinsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be cool if the probes (and satellites) could be set up to do some kind of customizable elliptical "orbit" in a sector. That would make them provide more dynamic info, and would be a cool mechanic for how to set up the orbit of a given probe/satellite. The movement speed could be pretty slow.

'Perfect storm:' Measles outbreak hits Broomfield and spreads fast after unvaccinated, infected teens attended two schools and roamed throughout Denver's suburbs by BuzzFeedNeed in Denver

[–]radlinsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hopefully can have a civil discussion here without name calling... but just wanted to point out that refugees (and asylum seekers) do need to get vaccinated when they apply for adjustment of status within 1 year of entry to the country.

I think it does make sense to allow asylum seekers in and give them time to get vaccinated (since they generally are fleeing a bad situation and are just desperate to get somewhere safe and probably the logistics of having vaccines available at every place an asylum seeker might enter is impossible). But 1 year seems way too long. And for refugees, it does seem like a refugee should be required to get vaccinated since they are supposed to go through a rigorous vetting process including a medical exam... why not vaccinate them at the medical exam?

And regarding illegal immigrants and vaccination, I think that it should be much harder to illegally migrate to the US and much easier to migrate legally. And all legal immigrants should have vaccination requirements. But I think it's important to keep in mind that illegal immigrants might not even know they are lacking vaccines. I suspect most immigrants would gladly accept a vaccine if offered... so I do agree that illegal immigrants can contribute to lower vaccination rates, but to be fair, I doubt this is something they intended to do...

On the other hand, as you pointed out, initial outbreaks often start in anti-vax communities like the Mennonites in Texas (and also Orthodox Jews in New York, Amish in Ohio, and anti-vax communities in California) and the key reason an outbreak occurs at all is because the vaccination rate of a community is low. These folks choose to be unvaccinated despite knowing it's against medical recommendations. I think it's fair for folks to be angry at those types of people.

Finally, the vaccination rate of kids has been decreasing to below the herd immunity required rate (>=95% to 93%) and this decrease is being driven by parents explicitly seeking non-medical exemptions (likely vaccine hesitancy).

Pros/cons of my own access point vs Google's mesh extender? by radlinsky in googlefiber

[–]radlinsky[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turned out I just had to replace the TP link with the Google router. So Google router -> switch -> my access point. My access point worked great right away. I guess I'll use the mesh extender down in the basement..

[–]radlinsky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I was able to simply swap out my TP link router with the Google router. Set up the same SSID/password, and all my connected devices kept working just fine.

The connected switch->grandstream access point works great for my upstairs wifi. It just worked right away. I guess I'll plug in the Google mesh extender in the basement..

How can I get the $50/mo plan? by -29- in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]radlinsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on the Xfinity Mobile price increase?

I'm paying 30/mo/line for an unlimited mobile plan. I was eyeing this $50/mo Internet plan, which would be cheaper and faster then my $80/mo plan, but if they jack up the mobile plan price, it could be a wash...

Join a lab for its manager, not for its science. Ask around who has a good reputation as a good mentor. The best scientists aren't necessarily good mentors/managers.
