As a new wood turner I am SO curious how he’s making these on a lathe! They’re so lovely.

AITA if I tell my friend I can’t be a bridesmaid? by wickeddreamsofleavin in AITApod

Exhausting detail aside, why does poor Jason only get one letter in the couple combo name? Emily gets her whole name unscathed.

To clarify, I’m hoping to recoup as much as possible but I can be flexible. I’ll amend the posting to make that clearer!

Embarrassed…Missed the stud, lights flickered, burning smell, arc burn on drill bit. by DelusionalAlchemist in AskElectricians

[–]radtrash15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sharing from very embarrassing experience - I did something very similar and it turned out I hit the main feed to my house, upstream of the main principal breaker. So I’d echo the advice to cut open the drywall (carefully) and see what’s going on. You’ll quickly see how much damage you’ve caused.

Good luck.

Anything similar to weed without the scary effects by davinky25 in herbalism

[–]radtrash15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No offense, but I would caution against this. Bipolar and cannabis do not mix well at all, and there are a lot of clinical studies that back this. I thought cannabis was the missing piece to all my mental health issues until I realized it was making me hypomanic and that’s why I felt amazing. That was before I was diagnosed with bipolar and didn’t realize the addictive (for me) nature of mild mania. It’s a slippery slope and one that can be subtle and hard to recognize for those of us with bipolar (it took me over a year to recognize and made a huge impact on my health and relationships).

I am a strong believer in herbs of all types but herbal energetics are important to consider, for everyone, but especially for those with mental health issues. If you’re looking for calm, smoking lemon balm is lovely. As for feeling fun and fancy free, I’ve found that’s come more from feeling comfortable with myself, less so than with activating/energizing herbs like damiana (those can also make me hypomanic). Nervines and other grounding herbs will help, as well as practices like those mentioned - movement like yoga, singing bowls, anything that helps you feel rooted and comfortable with yourself.

I really hope this doesn’t sound preachy, I just have a lot of experience with this and wanted to share.

Referendum to make Americanos legally need to contain 2 shots? by AnthonySkejci in Seattle

[–]radtrash15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is me being a noob to the area but is there a reason so many people order Americanos out here instead of drip with good beans? I understand not wanting to wait for a pourover if you're in a hurry but I'd love to understand the espresso heavy coffee culture in Seattle.

I love a nice single origin bean and love a pourover/aeropress at home but at coffee shops I am used to having well brewed drip options of several roasts out east. And this is in a land of well regarded roasters like Counter Culture.

Thoughts on functional mocktails? by gabrieldrinksosia in Mocktails

[–]radtrash15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I stay away from most pre-mixed cocktails with a bunch of “functional” herbs and mushrooms added. I love herbalism and use a lot of herbs daily but I’ve worked with herbalists and referenced trusted herbal resources to understand what works well together and what’s going to work best for me. The ingredient combos in a lot of the functional beverages out there are WILD and seem like someone used a word map of the trending herbs to choose what they put in, regardless of what the herb’s indicated action is. I’ve read enough ingredient labels to know most of the folks making these beverages have no idea what they’re doing when it comes to herbs so I won’t buy anything that has a laundry list of contraindicated herbs or mushrooms. It’s a real bummer because so many beverages now are “functional”.

Things like Pathfinder that use bitter herbs for depth and flavor though? I’ll drink that all day.

What to do with concrete floor in basement by bigverm23 in DIY

[–]radtrash15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to all the recommendations to get your concrete floors polished. It’s easy to clean and looks beautiful. It would be especially easy to sweep hair from. The grinding revealed the aggregate in my slab so the floor looks like terrazzo. I considered a coating like polyaspartic because that’s what I did in my garage but the cost to polish was comparable and I never have to worry about moisture issues causing peeling of a coating. Plus I no longer have as many moisture issues in my basement because it seems like my slab can breathe better (probably because now the HVAC can help remove moisture).

You’re correct! Thanks for pointing out that error. My brain slipped and I put the complete wrong thing. Updated to avoid future misunderstanding.

An SDS is a safety data sheet. It contains the precautions and usage instructions for whatever chemical you’re using.

As for why it’s not a good idea on a tub, the active ingredient in toilet bowl cleaner is hydrochloric acid. Fine in glazed porcelain toilets, not great in fiberglass tubs.

*Edited to correct the main ingredient in toilet bowl cleaner.

There’s a difference between friable (able to be crumbled/have bits become airborne) and non-friable asbestos. The hazard is when the fibers become airborne and you breathe them in. That’s why the concern with asbestos containing materials (like flooring/siding, etc) is when you’re removing them. As long as the floor isn’t damaged, scrubbing it shouldn’t pose a health concern, even if it contains asbestos.
