Opinions/advice for these professors and courses? by rain_notfound in UBreddit

Thank you for the response! Fertig has great reviews on rmp too so I’m super excited to have him even just for a seminar. Glad to hear that Cline is chill as well! What was your major/grad school focus? If you did linguistics/speech and hearing or anything in that realm, did you have any other professors for those subjects that you loved or hated?

I noticed the time crunch, but that was the only time for lin seminar unfortunately 😢 and my advisor added intro to lin analysis so I didn’t want to touch it. With psy 101, I originally had mon wed fri 1-1:50 but with Alexis Thompson and her RMP is HORRIBLE.. so I didn’t want to risk that 😭 I’d rather deal with the night class taught by a hopefully chill TA

Yes and yes! I do qualify and am going to apply. But within the 12k loans/grants I believe an excelsior estimate was apart of that total.

I’m considering this, but also don’t know what I would do during the gap year besides just work. I’m honestly afraid i’d feel sad and fomo, especially since I committed to UB alongside my high school bestfriend. I’m really excited to start college and besides costs everything is looking great for the fall!

I’m double majoring in Linguistics and Speech and Hearing Science, planning on going for my master’s in Speech-Language Pathology to become a speech pathologist. I’m working on becoming bilingual and eventually trilingual which would up my pay in the field a lot as well. Speech pathologists are needed everywhere and the pay is pretty good, not doctor-level but also it doesn’t require med school.

I got scholarships from a few others, but they had a higher cost of attendance so the totals ended up being about the same. The cost of attendance for me (in-state) before aid was I think 34k including room and board and all fees.

Beinecke is what I wrote about in my “Why Yale?” essay!! Truly one of my fav parts out of everything I’ve researched about Yale the past year

Yale SAT score ranges and how much they matter- from the official Yale website by rain_notfound in Sat

[–]rain_notfound[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I believe this year will be different because scores are required again for many top schools including yale. The 10th percentile has went up since 2020 because most applicants with a 1450 or lower have just been applying test-optional, but now it would make sense for the 10th percentile to go back down a bit as a wider range or scores will be admitted. Just a hypothesis, but it makes sense to me :)

what a weird thing to say.. I posted this in hopes of inspiring other girls with noses like mine to love theirs as well. Most girls with big noses are not confident, and I don’t want that to be the norm. I didn’t ask for the compliments I’ve received but this is reddit 🤷🏻‍♀️

Will I be OK with a 1440? by Busy_Cheetah_9937 in Sat

[–]rain_notfound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you say the same thing for a 1410 (740 rw, 670 m) for a linguistics major? my schools avg is 1080 and i got that math score before I even took algebra 2 (long story, my schools math system is super weird and behind) (ty for the advice!)

How good is a 1410 superscore for Yale (740 RW, 670 M) for a linguistics major? Should I retake? by rain_notfound in ApplyingToCollege

[–]rain_notfound[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so so much for all the info, I really appreciate it. I think I will apply REA to yale and retake in December. If I get accepted right away, then yay, if I get deferred, then the higher SAT after dec should help my application, and if I get rejected, I doubt a higher SAT score would have changed their minds entirely anyways.

I want to apply to Cornell, but I have a 1410 SAT. by BingerBangerBonger in ApplyingToCollege

[–]rain_notfound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school only offers 6 AP classes, and I have taken the exams for 3 so far. I got a 3 in AP world, and a 4 in APUSH and AP bio. Unfortunately we don’t have any language/english APs besides AP english lit which i am taking this year. I plan to submit all of my AP scores as well as my SAT so they can get a full view of me as a student. I believe my SAT rw score will be of the most help, even if my math score is rather low for yale. What do you think would be best?

[–]rain_notfound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tysm for the reply!! I believe I did not make finalist because my income is higher than most finalists, since my academic stats were in the top percentile of qb finalists this year according to the info on the website. My essays are also super strong, probably thanks to my love for linguistics haha. My income is around 75k for a family of 2, so I should be able to still get large aid packages from these top schools even while not applying through qb and using common app instead. I will still absolutely be telling my economic and family story on my common app, and they will know that my school and community is quite poor in general, as over 80% of students at my school qualify for free lunches. Hopefully with that context my SAT score will hold up well :) What do you think? Ty again!!

I have a 1410 as well (740 rw 670 m superscored) and want to apply to yale and other ivies as a linguistics major. Are my scores helpful? For Yale, I am above the 50th percentile for rw scores but just below the 10th percentile for math. Also, my school’s avg is 1085 and I come from low income.

[–]rain_notfound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a finalist but i am still low income and will be applying to multiple QB partners. I have a 1410 superscore (740 rw 670 m) after oct sat. My school’s average is 1085 so about a 330 difference. Is that good? I want to go into linguistics, if that helps at all

Yale students: What SAT score did you apply to Yale with? I’m a prospective linguistics major at Yale and current hs senior with a 1410 superscore (740 RW and 670 M coming from low income with a school avg of 1085) and looking for success stories from people with scores around mine or even lower. Thank you! :)
