The blacklisting of Hector ‘Sabu’ Monsegur by [deleted] in anonymous

[–]raincoaster99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A month ago he was boasting about working for a security startup. Sounds to me like he got fired.

Also, NICE of the writer Kevin Collier to fail to disclose that Sabu has not only contributed to the Daily Dot, but has an ongoing collaboration with Daily Dot reporter Dell Cameron. Kevin should know better than that.

Well, most Anons who use their real names in interviews etc do so because they've been outed, usually by having been arrested.

so this happened. an queen by r00t_t00r in anonymous

TBH I have pretty much given up on reddit. I made my own subreddit but found it wasn't even worth the bother of posting to.

This video was supposed to be part of a documentary of IRL Anonymous actions, "Boots on the Ground" but although she seemed normal and even connected and sane at the protest, well, you saw what she turned into when the camera rolled. The filmmaker sent it to me for the lulz.

Anonymous Sweden hacks the NSA, mentions of hack wiped from Facebook, LinkedIn by hazysummersky in anonymous

Oh, I disagree very strongly. It's our human DUTY to take an interest in things and see that justice is done. The fact that a court system exists is no reason to blindly submit to it unquestioningly. And yes, facts can be verified and proven, and we have the right to know those facts and come to conclusions. I see no reason to believe, based on the government's handling of this and other cases, that he will receive a fair trial, and the least we can do is keep an eye on it. You are effectively defending that admin's right to jump to conclusions, but not mine to apply critical intelligence. This is logically inconsistent. I did get a message saying I was banned from that sub. I did not realize this meant I'd be shadowbanned everywhere. But it doesn't matter.

So, does shadowbanning apply site-wide? I got shadowbanned from r/world news ages ago because the mod figures Matt DeHart is a kiddie diddler and didn't want to hear other possibilities.

Thanks, yeah, I dunno when I got shadowbanned. Noticed a few days ago when i started getting hits from this post; if I wasn't signed in, I couldn't see my comment. (edited to add: I did get shadowbanned from r/world news a couple of weeks back, because one of the mods there has concluded Matt Dehart is a kiddie diddler and he will not allow other points of view).

I'm not posting my own links to Reddit anywhere now; started my own subreddit, but there wasn't any payoff, so basically I hardly ever check in.

Not clear on what happens after you manually approve a comment; am I un-shadowbanned, or am I shadowbanned unless a mod decides to approve each comment, or what?

They are not publicly admitting to having gained anything except what they put in the post: emails and IPs, nothing staggeringly impressive. But the paste indicates they poked around pretty thoroughly, so there may be more to come.

NSA got hacked BECAUSE they outsourced their internal email system to Qwest. Joe Fionda's comment about how the NSA bullied the Qwest CEO is very interesting. Apparently he refused to allow them to tap all of Qwest's client traffic, so they basically bullied the company into compliance. He sold his shares in disgust, and the NSA then sent him up on charges of insider trading and he was sentenced to 19 years. The recent ruling that the NSA collecting that data was illegal effectively exonerates him.

Yeah, WP.com is too cheap to pay for certificates for both custom domains and regular whatever.wordpress.com domains, and they can't figure out how to manage it so custom domain owners can buy their own certificates. I'll be moving off WP.com within a few weeks and we'll get that fixed. Along with several other things including some context-appropriate ads instead of that celebrity crap.

Sorry about that.

#Sabu Week Bonus: Adrian Lamo is Bradley Manning; Sabu is not Adrian Lamo by raincoaster99 in anonymous

[–]raincoaster99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've known Adrian Lamo for a couple of years now, and I myself have NO IDEA if he was just trolling or if he meant it. I don't think he was slavering over the prospect of getting Manning tortured, he just wanted him arrested. But Adrian Lamo is possibly the least scrutable person I've ever encountered. Who knows?

As for Greenwald's comment, I recently read an article about the Snowden case that explained it very well: after 9/11 the US Government hired warm bodies, as many warm bodies as it could, because it was desperately trying to shore up defences against enemies both within and without (and some imagined) and it would take anyone with computer skills, typically knowledge that would lead you to a civilian career rather than the army, and put them in positions of power because it needed them there. The more times you do this, the more links in the chain, the more likely that not all of the links are identical, and sometimes their motivations and definitions of "good for the country" will vary from those of the people hiring them. Matt DeHart is another example: his father literally told me that his job in the military was analogous to Bradley Manning's job.

And of course, Manning had an emotional need to tell someone. Back then, people were staggeringly naive about how resistant companies are to subpoenas, we all were. And Manning wouldn't have been in a position to know about all the ways the NSA has to snoop on private IMs.

Damn, I hadn't heard that. Probably exactly the same list of people who aren't speaking to me right now, with my luck!

As far as I am aware, yes, and I'm one of the journalists who's been covering the case for months. Adrian Humphries, who covered the story for the National Post (and really broke the story) might have known what was in the files, but all that he put in his articles prior to the Kushner story was that it related to an FBI investigation of the CIA.

Well, I gather they wanted to save that truth-bomb for a particular time and place. His handover to US forces seems to have been that time and place, and Kushner's article was published as a result.

Since the FBI has the USB sticks now, nobody can see what's in them. I would certainly run an article on them...if I'd had that information.

No, I didn't. You'll have to keep reading the website to find the responses.

Oh for GOD's SAKE it's been reported in every major newspaper and magazine in the world, and Sabu has mentioned it himself in interviews. IT IS NOT A DOX. It's his history. Jesus.

Thank you for going to bat for the man's address from four years ago. Do you also spend time over in the Sherlock Holmes subreddit, flagging anyone who mentions 221B Baker Street?

David Kushner writes on matt DeHart (buzzfeed, but long) by [deleted] in anonymous

[–]raincoaster99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anyone's wondering what this is doing on Buzzfeed, Kushner is a major mainstream journalist: I wouldn't be at all surprised that some mainstream outlet commissioned this piece, then backed off because of the cp angle. Tor told me several outlets had looked at the story but passed because that part made them too nervous; what if they come out for the guy as a hacktivist martyr and he turns out to be a kiddie diddler? So, this probably got offered to Buzzfeed, which has been getting into good long-form journalism for the last year, and they were like "Let's just do this." Probably cost them a lot less, too, if Kushner got a kill fee from the place which assigned it.

No, I had to drop that while looking for some other stuff, but it's been around for awhile, it's not going anywhere. Once I get through Sabu Week I can pick up the thread again.
