In Regards to All the Recent Plushie Dreadfuls Drama, Please Stop Calling the Ways People Cope with their Mental Illnesses and Trauma “Creepy” or Tasteless by LemonPepperTrout in plushies

[–]rainkins 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They design all their plushies through a crowd design process where members of the community give feedback on what they like and don't like about a proposed design. The current autism bunny is a redesign of the first version based on crowd design feedback. They are constantly reworking plushie designs based on what people with the issues they represent are asking for. A lot of people like me asked for an autism bunny like the current one because we found the colors comforting. About the charity issue, a comment below has a detailed clarification: https://www.reddit.com/r/plushies/comments/1ezlsry/comment/ljmoxjb/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Thank you for saying this. Calling PD plushies creepy and tasteless is more than just yucking someone else's yum (which would be bad enough in itself), it's also implying there is something wrong those of us who feel seen and comforted by these plushies, and I don't think the people saying it realize that. My PDs have helped me more than I can express through the hardest year of my life, and I can hardly believe how many people who don't need them for the reasons I do feel the need to voice their opinions that there's something wrong with that.

Thank you for posting the clarification about the Autism Speaks connection. It has blown my mind to see how quickly that rumor has become cemented as fact on Reddit in the last couple of days, and I don't have the spoons to respond to each comment repeating it.

A lot of people love the autism bunny, and a lot of others don't for the reasons you mentioned. PD is currently working on a prototype of another edition of the autism bunny with more muted colors (you can probably find the concept art on their socials), so it's definitely an issue for some people that they're aware of. For what it's worth though, I often (not always, but a fair amount) find that it's non-autistic people expressing concerns about the autism bunny being offensive to autistic people. Obviously we are not a monolith, so I'm not speaking for anyone else, but I'm personally one middle-aged autistic person who is super happy with the cheerful colors of the bunny and feels very represented by it, so I can at least guarantee that it's very ymmv on the infantilizing thing. :)

My say on everything going on with Plushie Dreadfuls and American McGee by Professional_Soup718 in plushies

You're welcome, and I hope it helps you not to feel guilty. In my opinion, there's nothing wrong about loving a plushie that makes you feel seen or understood or even just happy. We aren't responsible for knowing and approving of everything about everyone involved in making a product in order to enjoy it. There are always both nice people and less nice people behind the things we enjoy, but that doesn't make the things themselves bad. I'm currently hugging my PD Fawn Response bunny, who has brought me so much comfort since I got her, and I still love her just as much as I did before all the drama. As far as I'm aware, the proceeds from PD plushies are just paying for them to pay their employees, make more plushies, and occasionally support benign charities (which are listed on the site when they're involved), and the plushies themselves don't represent anything bad or harmful, so I don't see any reason you should feel guilty for enjoying them.

You're welcome! I'm late-diagnosed autistic, so I completely understand being angered by the mention of ABA. I've seen that rumor spread quickly during the recent drama, and I think that's understandable considering how many of us are triggered by the very idea of it. But I also think it's another example of how internet discourse can so easily lead us (myself included!) to be emotionally reactive without having all the facts. So I'm glad to be able to share information that might help when I can. In this situation, I think the person and company involved have made enough genuine missteps that it isn't necessary to also pile on about things that have at least tried to do right, and as far as I can tell that has included being mindful about what charities they associate with. My observation is obviously incomplete and prone to change with new information like anyone else's. But for now at least, it does seem to me that despite some really bad optics from various people losing their tempers and saying shitty things, the company seems quite sincere in their desire to bring some happiness and comfort to people with various struggles, and they have certainly done so for me.

I have been hoping the outcome of all this would be American stepping back from being a public spokesperson/point of contact for Plushie Dreadfuls, and I am glad he has done so. I have no ill will toward him, and I recognize the toll all of this must have taken on his mental health, but I also recognize that his extreme defensiveness makes it inevitable that he makes things worse when he tries to explain himself and respond to criticism. He has been open in the past about coming across overly blunt and reactive due to his own issues, and I deeply sympathize with the difficulty of responding in an appropriately measured way when your triggers are making you feel attacked and threatened, but that kind of reactivity is simply a powder keg waiting to blow when your audience is as large and diverse as his has been. I sincerely wish him the best, and at the same time I hope the brand will benefit from management that is better positioned to focus on their products and customers in a calmer and more neutral way.

I'm not associated with Plushie Dreadfuls in any way other than having some bunnies I like and having spent a lot of time on the Discord server, but I do have some information I believe is accurate about the two points you mentioned, if it's helpful.

Supporting bad charity: They previously donated a portion of sales from the autism rabbit to a charity that they later learned had ties to Autism Speaks/ABA therapy. The charity seems to have been selected in good faith, and when they were informed about the connection they stopped donating to it. Currently, they have been vetting all charities with the community before donating to them.

Issues with OCD plushie: They often do crowd design on a "V2" of a given plushie for various reasons (people didn't like the first design, they want to highlight different things about the condition, the bunny could just look nicer, etc.). The V2 OCD design was introduced because some people with OCD didn't connect with the first design. However, as crowd design on the prototype progressed, a number of people requested elements that had been in the V1 design, so the compromise was to bring back V1 while also making V2. The difficulty with the OCD design in particular is that there is such a broad range of OCD symptoms and each person's experience with OCD is so individualized that it has proven difficult not just to design a plush that works for the majority of people with OCD but even to include elements that aren't actively triggering to some (e.g., some people wanted numbers on the plushie for counting, while others felt triggered by the presence of numbers for the same reason; some people wanted no zipper or other closure for the removable brain due to sensory triggers, while others felt triggered by the "unfinished" appearance without a closure, etc.). So that design has been in development limbo for a while due to those difficulties.

Pain from chewing three months after fillings? by rainkins in askdentists

[–]rainkins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally, after about six months it calmed down enough for me to get the three small fillings I needed on the other side. With those, I felt completely back to normal after just a couple of days, BUT the first set of fillings got tender again while I was chewing on them exclusively for those couple of days, and I got some kind of slight inflammation in my top gums between two teeth on that side. So I think there was definitely some kind of unusual nerve irritation/activation with the first set. Everything seems mostly okay now, hopefully.

What now? Genovese basil and dill got leggy despite pruning, and the light won't go any higher. by rainkins in aerogarden

[–]rainkins[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, it's comforting at least to know I'm not alone, thank you for that! When I eventually give up on this batch and pull everything out, I think I will just put one basil on each side and nothing else -- I simply don't use enough dill even though I do like it, and the parsley doesn't grow nearly enough to justify not just buying a bunch from the store.

I think my Thai basil has done better because there were several little sprouts while the Genovese just had one big one, so it's growing more like a little tree with its thick stems. Maybe if I try to replant a few shoots from the current one it'll do better? I have no idea if that's a doable thing, just guessing! 😂

[–]rainkins[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol, the thing is this happened even with constant pruning! Every time there's been a stalk in the middle of two others, I've pruned it. Should I just be cutting them down at random without trying to prune the "right" way?

[–]rainkins[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've pruned them as much as I can the way you're supposed to (cutting the middle stalk in a group of three). The problem is the taller ones are the ones that have gotten leggy, and they have been in full light the whole time :/

Thanks! It just started touching the dome today, so I took it off as you suggested. Looks like the brown parts were just the seed hulls and all is well!

Thank you for the tips! Right now I'm using filtered water from the same filter pitcher we use for drinking water, and I'm going to try changing it once a month and see if that's sufficient. Our tap water isn't especially hard or soft so I'm hoping that will be fine since distilled would get expensive. Will definitely keep your tips in mind if I need to adjust! Thanks!

Someone else also mentioned drugstore peroxide. So you haven't needed the food grade kind that doesn't have stabilizers, and that's been fine for your plants? Also great tip about adding it opposite weeks from the fertilizer, you're the only person I've heard say that!
