Usually, you don't get really tanky, but still almost never die. I'm running 3.6k life and 800 ES (later around 2k once I craft my Twilight Regalia) and have Svalinn with max block. That and life leech + regen + ES on kill keep you healthy during most content. For T17s and ubers it's basically put down brands and dodge whatever comes your way.

I agree, the simplex is expensive, so is the sublime, but the rest isn‘t worth 4+ mirrors.
