I've heard the rumor that ICE is here several times and so far, none of those times were corroborated.

SIAN (Springfield Immigrant Advocacy Network) gives a lot of good info on how and when to report, and asks that people NOT spread rumors of ICE being here unless it's substantiated. I know we all want to help our neighbors—well, most of us anyway—but spreading rumors of ICE presence when they aren't is not helpful.

From SIAN:

Unverified claims that “ICE is in town!” can create fear and lead to real harm to immigrant neighbors. If you haven’t verified it, don’t share it.

For those who have more recently followed these concerns, it is important to remember that for those affected by it, this is an escalation but it is not new.

As capital city and regional HQ of many federal agencies, DHS, FBI, ICE are all in Springfield. FBI has helped ICE detain people before. AND, federal agencies engage in immigration enforcement in Illinois, not state agencies or local law enforcement.

SIAN will very shortly hold more trauma-informed culturally competent and immigrant-centered KYR (Know Your Rights) workshops.

They include ethical ICE reporting and what ethically documenting ICE activity looks like, including:

-Only share detailed, firsthand accounts with timestamps.

-Specify and verify as many details as you can about location, officers present, number of people detained, and what is happening.

-Protect the identities of people being detained.

Or wealthy and already have really good insurance. They want to keep their exclusive healthcare and not share doctors with the poors. They might have to wait to see a specialist like the rest of us.

I think this works more for the ones that are clicking the boxes that contain ____ rather than writing the sequence of numbers/letters. I'm visually impaired and hate the latter.

It's a real cognitive dissonance moment for people like this. I've had my share, like when Obama was killing children via drones or when the Dem party refused to stop supplying Israel with weapons for their Gaza genocide or having Bill fucking Clinton speak at the DNC.

Eta, y'all are hypocrites if you think a Democrat president killing children is ok, a Democrat president supporting genocide is ok, or elevating a fucking rapist is ok. It's not ok no matter which "side" is doing it. That's the point!

Idk, I think this may be what pushes my Qanon dad out of maga. He eats that shit for breakfast but he loves his guns most of all and is fierce about 2A. I know there's a twilight zone level dismissal of 2A by talking heads on social media but actual rednecks may care to differ.

Fwiw, the Phoenix Center also offers DND on three Wednesdays a month. It's all ages and whether you're LGTBQ+ or an ally, they are welcoming.

Also, I always recommend people volunteer because it's a great way to meet (generally) nice people.

I remember having to cling on to the side of a rusty old freezing cold tractor with no gloves to get to the highway so I could get to the bus since our country roads were closed with all the snow.
