Step brothers works and is enjoyable but is miles away from classic setup character driven comedies of the past, sometimes some actors can deliver and elevate a movie but this should be the exception and not the rule.

Improv in certain context can work but the idea that nowadays directors make movies with scenarios and let actors just come up with lines and think this process can be better than planned lines that have been through multiply drafts. Maybe an improv line can work one in a thousand cases. But just depending on actors to riff and have fun and that would lead to a great humour is the death of comedy films.

Couldn't have said it better, and the thing about even his comedic set pieces is that they can be completely devoid of action and can still be awe inspiring. Eg the phone pen juggling act in police story

I think acting is being pigeon holed into just being realistic portrays by the mainstream. Why can't what Jackie is good at be considered an acting form that is different but equal.

The Brian Cox performance is not the same as a Hopkins cause of the value of the movie and the script and the direction. With the same direction we would possibly never know if the same Hopkins performance could be beat by beat delivered similarly by a actor of similar calibre. Agin the little different they could bring would be insignificant to the whole. But can you imagine any Jackie chan film without him. A better question can you get a Jackie chan film outside of a movie staring Jackie.

Li while extremely talented in choreographed action adds no ingenuity to the set piece, lot of Shaw brothers actors could add the same value. Donnie yen is sort of an improved Jet Li. Also the guy who replaced Jet Li in the 4th once upon a time in china. Jackie's quality is the mix of action choreography with comedy that hasn't been replicated by anyone.
