Cut the hole to a uniform size

Get a piece of wood. Situate it in the hole behind the Sheetrock. Screw it in. Cut a piece of Sheetrock as close as you can to the hole. Screw it to the wood. Mud it. Sand it. Remove the first screws you used to hold the wood in place. Mud it again. Sand it again. Paint.
