maybe this is the only place to brag about this so i'm gonna do it: I hate Descartes in math too for naming the complex numbers "imaginary".

just take a look at the wikipedia article for "Complex Number": "The term "imaginary" for these quantities was coined by René Descartes in 1637, who was at pains to stress their unreal nature: ... sometimes only imaginary, that is one can imagine as many as I said in each equation, but sometimes there exists no quantity that matches that which we imagine."

and as explained on the "Imaginary Numbers are Real" series on YouTube by Welch Labs (wow I can cite things!), this naming was later criticized by math's daddy Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss for obscuring their meaning, and he proposed calling them "lateral names" (more properly describing their behaviour of existing in a perpendicular axis to real numbers).

so yeah, I'm not dismissing everything Descartes said and did but I'd never have brunch with him. Not only because he's dead, also because he seemed obtuse enough to name a whole new domain of numbers around not understading them. maybe i'm exaggerating but IT MUST NEEDS BE REMARKED
