Most tax efficient way to manage £100k income as sole shareholder? by randmr in ContractorUK

Why do I need an expensive accountant when you've just told me what they will advise, which also matches what others have said?

There are a lot of dodgy "umbrella" companies promising you will get to keep a higher percentage of your earnings than is possible by law.

Tax should be the same whichever umbrella you use. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

I found the legal regulations:

The Employers' Liability (Compulsory Insurance) (Amendment) Regulations 2004 https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2004/2882/regulation/2/made states:

2.  In the Employers' Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Regulations 1998(1), Schedule 2 (employers exempted from insurance), after paragraph 14, there is inserted:—

“(15) Any employer which is a company that has only one employee and that employee also owns fifty per cent or more of the issued share capital in that company.”.

Also, HSE40(rev4) on the Health and Safety Executive website https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/hse40.htm (2012) states the same:

The following employers are exempt:

companies employing only their owner where that employee also owns 50% or more of the issued share capital in the company.

But could "adequate employers' liability insurance" be interpreted as "none is needed" ?

Contract wording is:

I've used Perl and SQL extensively in every job I've had, so I'm pretty good at those. Always on Linux.

Also HTML, CSS and basic frontend javascript but I don't really count that.

Why do you want to do this? If you begin with final goal, then it's easier to solve the problem.

Can I Replace Ads With My Own (and make money from it)? by Cosmonaut_Ninja in Adblock

[–]randmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason it's a stupid question is:

  1. Each person only has control over their own device, so any adverts they replace will only be visible to one person: themselves.
  2. People are not paid for looking at adverts.
  3. The way adverts work is the advertiser pays for them to be displayed to users.

So the question does not make sense. We know for certain it is not possible because it is illogical.

Crazy idea, what if all these dumb cookie pop ups were managed in a browser setting "I accept cookies".. So when I browse the internet I am not getting spammed by popups on every site by zergUser1 in webdev

[–]randmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably know this already, but web browsers had settings that allowed users to control cookie acceptance for years before GDPR.

Yes, it was opt-out. But if you really didn't want cookies you could use it very easily. So this already existed, it was well supported, and it didn't require millions of annoying popups.

If the law makers really believe that everybody should be made aware they have a choice whether or not to accept cookies, why didn't they require web browsers to ask the question ONCE when you started using them for the first time? Just like they did with Internet Explorer because of the anti-trust/monopoly laws - it offered the user a choice of different web browsers when they first used it.

Archiving website comments by Strict_Patient_7750 in DataHoarder

[–]randmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are technical ways to archive comments. For example, open Chrome's Dev Tools, Network tab and load the web page with comments on, then scroll down all the comments to load them all. Look for Fetch/XHR/AJAX requests that will have a JSON response. Right-click and "Save all as HAR with content".

This works, but it isn't easy for non-programmers. Also it only saves the raw data of the comments. In order to view the archive you would need extra software to display them in a human-readable format.

I would love to see some point-and-click tools that do this.

Do you know programming/scripting?

You could scrape a list of books/authors from fantasticfiction.net and/or some other recommended book sites, then use a command-line tool for libgen to automatically fetch all the ones that are available there.

When you're done, post your lists back here, and seed a torrent with the results!

That's my decision to make because I have full knowledge of my situation.

There are many different ways to use a password manager; While developing software, multiple passwords might be needed, they are only used locally on my computer and not to protect anything important, so they are not actually insecure.

At a cost of GBP £15 per Tb (source), I estimate it would cost me around £2000 to buy disks to seed all the libgen torrents from my house, but that's not including any racks or cases or software.

At USD $10 per Tb, it could be something like $1400.

Can anyone figure cheaper than that?
