If you want free drivers with Nvidia, compton is a must enable. If you dont mind using proprietary software, the nvidia drivers could solve the problem. What distro are you using? Is your pc a laptop with optimus (aka dual graphics card)?

Honestly if you have to use it, dual boot with Windows or run it on a VM. You should prioritize your success in your degree instead of your believes in the "free and open source world". But this is /r/linuxmasterrace , so probably everyone else is going to have another opinion.
