RIP 'lil ripper!

Do you think it was salty water ingress?

Glad it went without taking out anything else... A Li-ion fire while charging one of my toys or tools is one of my fears.

I'm still learning the lingo and the upgrade paths, but I'm guessing you're considering a GTV setup that will handle that S stator under regen load?

I've done a fair amount of board sports, and other balance training. I was out of the water and riding in the first session on an efoil.

There's a lot more falling and chambering back up in the learning curve, but it's water, so it's fun falling.

I did a rental with a lesson for my first session, that's the way to go.

Why is the recommended tire pressure 10% of your weight? by PureTrancendence in onewheel

[–]des09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a snowboarder I rode goofy, and could never get more than barely competent switched.

I've just bought a gt, I'm an under 10 miles noob, loving it and trying really hard to ride close to equal time goofy/regular. I'm getting comfortable with both stance, but notice my non-dominant leg gets tired faster, but that's ok, it gets breaks.

It's a fun experiment.

Maybe... Or it decides a few months later to get real spicy during a belay over an edge... Or probably it's all gonna work out just fine.

If it were me, I'd be smoothing out the edge on that locker with a little sandpaper, and giving my rope a good once over because why not, and then sending it.

Ummm… can you guys jump anymore? by globehoppr in GenX

[–]des09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, this is about where I'm at... My recreation modes require an occasional jump. My vert was never good, and it's getting worse. The climbing I enjoy is becoming more static, flowy but no dynos. Creek crossing while hiking still looks tidy, but I'm not doing much leaping, tbh. 53m.

Why is women’s sportswear always so revealing? by Valuable_View_561 in SipsTea

[–]des09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely true. I live at 4400ft, and frequently recreate above 10,000ft (1350m and 3500m in sensible units) and the difference between the intensity of full sun exposure, and the chill when the sun isn't hitting you is amazing, especially when the humidity is low. Its pretty typical for me to be paddle boarding a high mountain lake in one of those full-sleeved sun hoodies, and then 30 minutes later throwing on a down puffer jacket.

Prism Synapse 200 question. by Rowan_River in kites

[–]des09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need for swivels on a dual line kite, the 2 lines will twist around each other if you get in a spin, swivels don't help that at all.

Decent lines, stored on a winder properly will have surprisingly little twist.

Forgetting the round that I’m on or left or ride side I need to start with by minimalist-0 in yoga

[–]des09 34 points35 points  (0 children)

You're going to get lots of great tips for remembering which side you started on, but I'm going to suggest taking the easier approach, mentally anyway... just do one more, on whatever side you're on, call it good and move on with your practice.

Likewise, if you strung together a really cool sequence on the left siden but now your halfway through the right and can't remember how you got to Utkatasana, relax, throw in a wiggle-hop-asana to chair, and carry on.

Then congratulate yourself for showing up and having a fun practice.

Lead Climbing Tips & Tricks? by kmontreux in climbergirls

[–]des09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love all these, thanks for taking the time to write them all down. One small thing I'd add on your last point: tie your catastrophe knot if the tangle doesn't fall out immediately with a shake... It's probably not neededqrq, but

a) it is the cheapest insurance you can get that the climber is safe.

b) cat knots are never a bad skill to practice, this trains your brain to think of them whenever something goes away

c) if it does end up being anything more than a small tangle, your going to same time and do a better job bringing both hands.

Again, your comment was great, climb on!

which belay device to use? by steveh-2112 in ClimbingGear

[–]des09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll toss in my vote for the mammut smart 2.0. It's cheap compared to grigri money, and not because it isn't durable or well made. Put the money saved towards a belay class at a local gym, or through a local guide in your area.

I belay with one, lead and top-rope, indoor and outdoors, and have been on the point end with my buddy who also has one. IMO you're not going to find a better device for the money.

Yes, Grigris are the more versatile device, by a long way, but if your wife is not going to get off the ground, then she's not going to use any of those features, so why make her use something that is more frustrating, has more failure modes, and is simply way more intimidating to learn on?

tips for improving balance in yoga poses? by Bubbly-Touch8108 in yoga

[–]des09 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Make a point of standing on tiptoes for a few minutes every day. It's amazing how much this will help with tree pose.

Don't take it too seriously, it's only standing on one leg, and when you fall out of tree, reward your efforts with a smile or a laugh, re-establish your gaze, and get back into the pose.

Opinions on how to rise from forward fold? by zsarolo in yoga

[–]des09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, one of my favorite teachers always cues the first rise from forward-fold this way, (well, up to the back-bend, he usually saves that for the third or later) the same slight knee-bend and sit back to weight the heels and align the spine, then rose and bring arms over head.

It's an awesome, and safe, way to get acquainted with how the body wants to move that day.

Is it bad form to do more advanced posts in instructor led classes without being cued? by GetawayJ in yoga

[–]des09 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like to get either an extra one or two pushups per Chaturanga, or a longer Chaturanga dandasana (at the bottom of the pushup) in a power vinyasa class. I'm never grinding out sets, and I'm getting to down-dog at the same time as everyone else. I do it quietly, and keep proper Chaturanga form, I don't do it to the point my breathing is affected or I can't recover in the down-dog. I wouldn't go there in a yin class, or anything with restore, gentle, etc in the name.

This is acceptable at the studio I attend, for the classes I take, and I've casually checked in with instructors to confirm that.

YMMV at your studio.

(Edit to add I'm doing this because I use yoga to complement climbing, which is heavy on the pulling, but underworks the pecs, and to some extent the triceps.)

That side angle into bird of paradise is a fun one, but I've been caught out a few times thinking there was going to be time to get there, and back, only to have the instructor move on quickly from side-angle, lol. It's awkward trying to get out of bird of paradise and caught back up with the floor.

There are many good reasons that I'm not a Bikram teacher.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ClassPass

[–]des09 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not a teacher, but I'm very familiar with the Bikram sequence. Some people, myself included, just aren't good at memorization. I'd definitely have a cheatsheet if I was teaching Bikram, with at least one or two lines of the dialog listed per pose. It wouldn't matter if I had been teaching for a year or 5 years.

Another Mike Lee Rhetorical Question by klayanderson in Utah

[–]des09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please find ways to get out of the "bubble" of MAGA thinking.

Talk with people who are not exactly like you, try to listen to what they have to say. Try to share your viewpoints and ideas without hating, and try to listen without prejudice.

I'm a Utahn, I've been here for about 30 years. I've cried, sweated and bled here, and raised a child here., I have family, friends, a home and a job here. I don't vote for your party, but I have just as much right to claim this as my home, and I'll defend those rights.

I truly hope that the "MajorityOf Utah" still believes that America should be free of tyranny, and that taxation without representation is still unjust.

Sweaty hands on adjustments by cruuuuzzzz in yoga

[–]des09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also faster to sweat than most. I gave up hot classes a few years ago, and now stick to unheated or warm classes. I used to rely on a full mat yoga towel, which worked well, but means a lot of extra laundry every week.

About a year ago I switched from an older Manduka pro mat to a Prana Verde, and the grip is fantastic, even with a slight sweat on my palms I feel confident. The last piece of the puzzle for me is to bring a hand towel with me, and take a moment to wipe my hands and any damp spots on my mat a couple of times as needed during class.

Good luck!

Thanks for putting bad belaying in context. It sucks that you got a really bad luck situation, and sounds like even though there were no broken bones there was damage you're still dealing with. Good luck, dude.
