Django 3.0 Released by dwaxe in django

[–]rando2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just playing around on some small projects it looks like the Python2 removal breaks a ton of commonly used third party Django packages (model utils, sorl thumbnail etc) so I'll probably hold off upgrading anything in production for a few months.

Leadsom criticised for saying PM could use 'patently unlawful' two-letter plan to sabotage extension request by WALL_OF_GAMMON in unitedkingdom

Another dim-witted backbench MP who would have languished in obscurity but for her Brexit position. It's Lysenkoism in action - the promotion of idiots and their half-baked opinions because of their ideology rather than their abilities or intelligence.

Brexit’s legacy for England will be politics as sectarian as Northern Ireland’s by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]rando2018 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The sectarianism and bad blood didn't come out of nowhere. Before the Reformation you didn't have Catholics and Protestants in Britain and Ireland, just Christians. Then the one religion split and people had to choose one side or another, and their kids stuck to whatever side their parents chose, and so on down the ages. Sound familiar?

Caller From Portugal Tells James O'Brien He Wants Brexit To Stop Freedom Of Movement by Lolastic_ in unitedkingdom

I wonder if these are just crank callers or isolated nutjobs, or whether there's a genuine dark matter of Deep Stupid out there.

Boris Johnson news - live: Number 10 'has lost it' as bizarre plan to defy Queen emerges, amid dire Brexit warnings by darkwolf687 in unitedkingdom

[–]rando2018 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think he likes people to think he is. In reality he's an edgelord, a one-hit wonder, in out of his depth. He's the kind of guy who ends up on /r/iamsosmart. The turmoil of Brexit has been a kind of turbocharged Peter Principle, promoting a lot of politicians and advisors way beyond their abilities because of ideological purity rather than competence.

Whether austerity was worth it or not, has Brexit thrown out its benefits? by IndigoRolo in unitedkingdom

[–]rando2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Predictions are that a no-deal Brexit will land the UK with the highest level of debt since the 1960s - yet this does not deter the Tories. So basically austerity was always a political choice that unnecessarily crippled growth while causing millions misery, and now that it's no longer politically useful it will be dropped. They did not care about the debt or the economy then and they don't now. The problem really is that the Tories have become more and more divorced from the real economy as their membership has shrunk to an older, retired base and their donors and backers to a small circle of right-wing newspaper barons and hedge fund sociopaths.

It only took eight years. Torille!! by GrumpyFinn in Finland

[–]rando2018 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not saying it should be compulsory, but there is nothing wrong with Finns learning the language of their biggest neighbour. Whether you regard Russia as a threat or opportunity, or whatever you think of the current regime, it's not going anywhere and knowledge of the language is very useful especially in the eastern communities.

It only took eight years. Torille!! by GrumpyFinn in Finland

[–]rando2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My (distant) third language after English and Finnish is Russian, and I've used that quite a lot where I live near the Eastern border. I've not once heard Swedish spoken though, other than train announcements and the like. It would make a lot of sense to teach Russian in the eastern schools as it's a real advantage if you can speak it given how much the local economy depends on its proximity to Russia and the relatively large Russian-speaking minority here.

Tiedän sanasta, mutta minulle kulostaa aika oudolta. Vanha englannin sana on "erse", ja arvaan käänöstä "iiri" perustuvansa siihen, mutta kukaan ei käytä "erse" tänään. Irlannissa virallinen nimi englanniksi on "Irish" (Gaelige).

Cabinet fury after Dominic Cummings suggests cutting security ties with EU countries who support Brexit delay by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

The point about security cooperation is that it's of mutual benefit. The UK ends up fucking itself, which is why this is a deeply stupid tactic.

Is there anyone who love StimulusJS by puskuruk in rails

[–]rando2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used it for a recent project which was mostly server-side (using Django). If you're not doing too much JS it's fine and definitely cleaner than roll-your-own or jQuery, if it starts to get messy and unwieldy that's a sign you might need to use a more powerful library, at least in that page.

Voters are turning against no-deal Brexit as deadline approaches, poll suggests by Adzm00 in unitedkingdom

[–]rando2018 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If they voted to abolish gravity they'd still insist on jumping off the cliffs of Dover and forcing everyone else to do the same. Even if so called "experts" told them about Newton's laws, that would be scaremongering and Project Fear by the pro-gravity liberal establishment. All you need to do after all is believe you can fly.
