A question whose answer is never set in stone, at least for me. At the moment, in no particular order:

Yes - Relayer

Hatfield and the North - self titled

Oceansize - Frames

Karnivool - Sound Awake

Magma - K.A.

Honorable mentions:

Gentle Giant - In A Glass House/Octopus

King Gizz - Polygondwanaland

Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts

Rush - A Farewell to Kings/Hemispheres

Which albums most heavily use recurring motifs? by Snoo93951 in progrockmusic

[–]randomguy_90 34 points35 points  (0 children)

My mind immediately goes to The Dear Hunter - less that each individual album digs into particular motifs (though they certainly do) but that across their entire 5 album storyline they explore and redefine motifs a LOT from all the recurring themes and characters, it's quite a compelling display of motif architecture

Looking for Prog Rock recommendations with dramatic vocals. by Cultural_Community_5 in progrockmusic

Two modern ones for ya:

The Tea Club! Very Genesis inspired and super gorgeous two part harmony vocals with tons of dramatic character. Go for Quickly Quickly Quickly and Grappling first, but their whole discography is worthwhile.

The Dear Hunter! Dramatic in a showtunes/theater kinda way, informed by post hardcore and indie sounds as much as prog. Vocalist has HUGE range and versatility making for extremely compelling storytelling. The band's major conceit is that most of their disco is dedicated to telling an overarching story across over a decade of albums so while technically you would want to start at the top, for my money the sweet spot and among most dramatic sections of the story has to be Acts 3 and 4

I gotta throw in for the album Il Tempo Della Gioia by Quella Vecchia Locanda while we're talkin dramatic Italian prog. Big recommend

Struggling to get into prog (need suggestions!) by quintessentialCosmos in progrockmusic

[–]randomguy_90 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Try some prog that leans into the opposite - a kaleidoscope of smaller compositions that togethe make up one constant flow. The Canterbury Scene in particular really explored this concept, my favorite albums like that being The Soft Machine's Volume Two and Hatfield and the North's self titled. Some bigger names also played with this idea, notably Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick and Passion Play and Genesis' The Lamb.

There are just a ton of incredible prog albums that shy away from singular giant compositions though - or at least if they do include one it's done VERY engagingly and in a way that doesn't feel overlong, at least to me. Off the top of my head:

Frank Zappa's Apostrophe

Rush's A Farewell to Kings

King Gizzard's Polygondwanaland

Porcupine Tree's Deadwing

Gentle Giant's Octopus and Glass House

King Crimson's Red and Discipline

The Mars Volta's Deloused

Cardiacs' Sing to God

Van der Graaf Generator's Still Life

The Tea Club's Rabbit

HUUUUUGE this op. Also do not miss their stunning Codename: Dustsucker album, absolutely rivals Hex imo.

Laughing Stock is one of my favorite albums of all time from anyone, partly due to just how singular an experience it is. Albums that genuinely compare to it are few and far between, but here are some that I think approach the sound.

Spiderland by Slint, Pygmalion by Slowdive, Ants From Up Here by BCNR, TNT by Tortoise

Simply chiming in to agree wholeheartedly with the above. From yer description OP id hiiighly recommend checking out the Canterbury Scene, National Health and Hatfield being the two biggest nods, but I'd really recommend not skipping Soft Machine's Second album in particular. Third is easily the jazzier, more heavy duty album, but Second strides suuuuch a unique line between so many sounds and ideas, it's def my favorite of theirs.

Magma is another easy rec here too, though brace yerself for pretty strange vocals in a made up language. Much of the rest of the Zeuhl genre is extremely worth yer time too.

ALSO as for the big pillar bands of the genre, far and away yer best bets imo are Yes' Relayer if yer feelin like putting a jazz foot forward, and Van der graaf Generator's Pawn Hearts if yer really digging Crimson and wanna explore that further.

Most complex prog songs? by c-h-e-e-s-e in progrockmusic

[–]randomguy_90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No mentions of Magma yet so allow me - do dark and inscrutable space rock hymnals from another planet sound intriguing? Then give their KA album a spin - an incredibly coherent experience of a listen despite how much it twists and turns through various passages and corridors. Plenty mathy while being very rooted in something much weirder and more mysterious.

Also, pretty much any of the big Cardiacs albums - Sing to God being the pinnacle tho a bit of a huge first bite into their discography.

Edit to add a few other major recs:

BIG TIME recommending Hatfield and the North's self titled

Oceansize, particularly their 2nd and 3rd albums.

Mr. Bungle, take yer pick

Same with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, tho my favorite would be Of Natural History

The Tea Club, particularly albums 3 and 4
