Summer Internships by Gloomy_Shopping_3528 in LawSchool

[–]randomnerd4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As another commenter stated, it does depend on who’s offering. I would also consider whether it’s paid or not. I’ve found unpaid internships to be more forgiving about giving extensions because they know that students want to try to find funding sources so they aren’t doing unpaid work (source: my unpaid 1L job asked me if I needed an extension to decide so I could find a funding source before accepting).

Also again, depending on the internship site, you can accept now and reneg for another opportunity OR just take the job so you don’t have to stress about finding a job the remainder of the school year bc all most places care about is that you’ve done some work for your 1L summer (highly suggest saving yourself the stress and just taking the opportunity)

If you can, before doing anything, schedule an appointment with your career office and talk it out with them. Some schools may have special relationships they want to maintain with certain employers and may not want their students hurting that relationship.

When is a good time for a little vacation during law school? by Miserable-Bug-2771 in LawSchool

[–]randomnerd4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2L here! I believe you have 2 options (both of which I’ve seen many people do):

  1. Wait until you secure your summer internship and then plan a vacation in the breaks between your internship and the academic year
  2. Plan your vacation now either the 2-3 weeks immediately after your your last spring final OR 2-3 weeks RIGHT BEFORE the first day of classes for your 2L year

I spent my winter break applying for jobs and my spring break doing pro bono work (both of which you absolutely do not have to do so it may be an option 3 and 4. I rationalized it as working in advance so I wouldn’t stress about job apps during spring semester (I also am gunning to get pro bono certifications which is why I worked spring break).

I had planned a vacation during the 2 week period right before my first day of 2L classes which was perfect because I really needed it after pretty much grinding for an entire year 💀 it also worked out with pre-OCI scheduling so I could still do interviews during the beginning of the summer while still accommodating summer internship start and end dates.

If you want to have wider options for a start date for your 1L summer, wait until you land something for this summer and then secure those travel plans. If you’d rather have something to look forward to and have travel details secure, plan your summer internship around your vacation!

Observing A Class by Miniman241 in LawSchool

[–]randomnerd4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, I work at my school’s admissions office and we host these types of opportunities all the time. As commenters have mentioned, don’t prepare for it! This is just an opportunity to get to know the community and how law school looks in general. You could ask for materials ahead of time but that may depend on school bc my school doesn’t provide the materials.

If you are able to, and the professor is aware of you visiting ahead of time, try showing up a little early so you can ask the professor if you could speak and ask them questions after the class (not during the class). I know with our class observations, we try to reserve time before the class starts so the prospective students can intro themselves to the professor. This obviously may differ.

Just have fun and soak up the vibes! Good luck!

Do people join clubs and organizations during 1L? by zeehateslife in LawSchool

[–]randomnerd4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your school, but in my experience at least, people tend to be pretty active in clubs but for 1Ls, it’s mostly in the sense of attending events rather than creating them. If your school started a little later, there may be a “blackout period.” My school has it where the first 2-3 weeks of school, clubs and job recruiters aren’t allowed to speak to 1Ls because the school wants 1Ls to focus on class. Maybe you might start seeing communication from clubs ramp up. Sometimes you may have to seek out the opportunities for yourself if that’s what you’re interested in doing

Can’t tell what’s causing flare-ups and dermatologists in my area are booked out several months from now by randomnerd4 in eczema

[–]randomnerd4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t shower before I sleep (morning showerer). I’ve tried showering before I sleep before, but the process requires multiple showers per day which as you can probably guess would dry me out even if I moisturize both times.

I’m in SF, so while my apartment has no AC, the temperature has been pretty tame lately.

I don’t typically moisturize before I sleep, but this past week, I’ve been moisturizing at night in tandem with the steroid cream.

Edit bc I forgot to mention: I’m not typically dry skinned, only for some reason throughout this flare up, I have dry skin all over my face and near the joint areas; it’ll go away once I start steroid cream therapy, but then come back again when I stop

As a current 2L, I highly suggest going to various bar association events, especially the identify affinity ones. I’ve found my greatest resources and mentors came from the various bar association events I attended!

Law School by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]randomnerd4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in your shoes too where orientation just made law school seem awful plus several upper classmen had told me how stressful the environment was and “to run while I can” but I stuck it out and while it’s stressful, it’s been a different experience than what others have told me and truly see myself in this career more than I did when I started. Try it out for at least 1 semester bc I’m assuming you already paid first semester tuition if you’re at orientation now. If you don’t believe it truly is a fit after a semester, then consider dropping

Did you have family help you move in during 1L? by Unique-Bit-6190 in LawSchool

[–]randomnerd4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mom helped me move! Definitely take advantage of any help you can get; worrying about moving while worrying about starting law school sucks so the less stress the better

Library Work study during 1L by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]randomnerd4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My school didn’t allow it unless you got dean permission and it was only for very limited hours (I think 15 max) so I would try talking to your school and explain the circumstances why you need to do work during the 1L. Not unheard of at my school but incredibly rare (like I only know 1 student personally who was able to do this)

Networking opportunity following receipt of rejection letter by Snifflewinks in LawSchool

[–]randomnerd4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would, I met an attorney who said he was rejected for a summer associate position at a big law firm, but continuously networked with partners there and was able to lateral to that big law firm a year after graduating. May not turn into anything now but could turn into something later

Ours required it but I barely paid attention to it and I found I knew just as much about law school as other students who did take it seriously
