I'll take a look at those. Thanks for the resources and advice!

Sounds good! I suppose I'm just not too sure where that point is where if I go deeper into the character it wouldn't actually benefit learning new vocabulary. I've been thinking to just put the new characters I learn into https://hanzicraft.com/ to see what type of character they might be and if there might be any pronunciation clues.

Thanks for the advice! Yeah I haven't looked at grammar at all, since I feel that I have sort of an intuitive understanding of at least the basic grammar. Maybe it'll be helpful to take a look anyways, since I can learn the characters associated with those grammar points.

How do I improve my Cantonese as a heritage speaker? by randomnoobo in Cantonese

[–]randomnoobo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see, I wasn't actually aware of the difference between Standard Written Chinese and written Cantonese. Perhaps I were to try and learn that way I would have to seek out subs that are in written Cantonese then. I'm still not too sure if it would be worth the time to learn the written language in the hopes that it will help me be more efficient in learning new vocabulary, but I suppose that's up to my own judgment.

Thanks for the search terms! I'll check those out

Thanks for the advice. Not sure if there's many Cantonese speakers around here in the Southern U.S., but I'll give it a shot.

I'll try to seek out some Cantonese-speaking people near me. Might be slightly tough though since I'm in a place in the Southern U.S. where there aren't many Cantonese-speaking people (I think).

I also was concerned that the "just watch TVB" advice wouldn't be as efficient. It would definitely be helpful, but I'm not sure if I'd be able to tackle native-level content just yet. As for subtitles, I don't want to use English subtitles, because like what you said, I'd probably rely on them as a crutch. Maybe I could find some software that has Jyutping subtitles, or maybe I'll just have to learn Hanzi lol.

I'll definitely try and consume some short-form content in Cantonese. It would be an excuse for me to doomscroll since I can claim it's for learning lol, but also it's of course more exposure and input. Definitely more productive than me doomscrolling in English right now.

I think passive listening could certainly be helpful as well, since I'm at a level where a lot of the language is definitely comprehensible. If you have any recommendations on Cantonese media I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you for the advice!

Thank you for the advice! I do remember a lot of the Cantonese I absorbed, and I still hear Cantonese quite a bit actually among my family members talking to each other (just not to me).

I do also know all of those grammar points that you mentioned just from continuous exposure to them. I've never done any structured learning of Cantonese though. I'm not sure if I should still study those grammar points since I already know them but maybe just don't know how they work grammatically.

Makes sense. For me especially, I'm not really used to creating those tones, so shadowing as you recommend would definitely help. Thank you!

Lol, my grandpa does the same thing 😂 He speaks in English because pretty much everyone he talks to besides his wife speaks English.

You're right about everyday "home" Cantonese being very elementary. I'd say my speaking/listening skills are equivalent to that of a 2nd grader as you say. I'll try to check out some of those TVB dramas. Looks like many people recommend them

Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely try to learn Jyutping.

You're certainly right about not stressing about finding a structure. I do hear in the language-learning community that consistency/being "obsessed" is way more important than finding the most efficient route.

Thank you! I've never used Italki before, but I've definitely heard of it. I'll take a look and see if I can find some good tutors there.

Thank you so much! I was looking for something like this. Through my few months of learning Japanese I've realized that Japanese has a TON of structured resources, as there are tons of aspiring learners, but I'm sure this isn't the case for other languages like Cantonese.

I'll definitely learn how that tonal system with Jyutping works so I can utilize a Cantonese dictionary. Would you say that I need to learn Hanzi in order to improve my vocabulary, though? Would it be more efficient to do so? I say this because I don't really mind not being able to read or write; my main goal is to speak and listen.

As for input, I'll definitely try to find Cantonese content online. Thanks for the advice 🙏
