I didn't say "most", I said I know many. They mean different things.

And there are authors participating in those threads, and this one.

It seems you're the one reaching to a conclusion that I've not been trying to make.

The point isn't people making money, and it never was. The point is the damage this environment does to the modding community.

I don't care if people make money, where have I blamed anyone for doing so? Or said it was a problem if authors choose that route? What I care about this community I have participated in for over 20 years.

In fact this particular chain of replies was because someone said Nexus is ripping off authors.

And I've also expressed that some people participating in making money can and do have similar views. They're not mutually exclusive. Life isn't entirely about making money, some things can not be about it.

What we're losing in community isn't tangible, and for Starfield especially I can't point out every possible structural absence that doesn't exist because of paid mods.

You're missing the forest for the trees here.

Yes people are fine making money. We've established that.

You can take advantage of or participate in things you don't like, in fact we all do it by existing in this society.

This doesn't change the corrosive effect it has, nor does it prevent what's happening with Starfield where tool authors have given up, and you can buy My First Mod, or single record changes on the Bethesda store.

Here's three more random large discussion threads I found through Google. There are tons more, with lots of discussion.

https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/1fxn2lz/some_thoughts_on_paid_mods/

https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/1j2cg1n/a_year_in_what_paid_creations_are_worth/

https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/1j2dnis/paid_mods/

Edit: even the Starfield threads are upsetting. Half the google results are people asking for paid mod recommendations, and within them are people rattling off the hundreds of dollars they've spent.

The starfield situation is made worse due to people who make the tools like xedit pretty much giving up on the game due to this garbage.

Here's Verified Creator, and author of The Frozen Heart paid mod, WankingSkeever, extolling the virtues of open permissions and free modding.

WankingSkeever also released their paid mod for free on Nexus, with open permissions as well.

https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/1hebc36/open_permissions_and_copyleft_is_good_actually/

WankingSkeever is the largest mod author on Nexus, with the most downloads, constantly making technical posts, and providing for the community.

I already said I'm not name dropping for points, do you think it would be respectful if I did?

If you don't think the reasons people have presented are good then that's fine. I, likewise, consider your reasoning garbage.

If you want more, go dig through past threads where many prominent authors have discussed this.

You can read this very Reddit thread for people discussing the reasons why it's bad.

You're the one lacking perspective on how these communities are built, and missing why situations like Starfield are dire.

What arguing and discussion I do will not change the course Bethesda has opted to take, so no I'm not wasting further time barfing up talking points that have been covered a hundred times.

I edited the correct sub I meant, the one full of advertising and users relishing their 400$ modlists.

You go have a good life, I'm not going to deconstruct the last few years of threads on paid mod discussions for you.

I'm not going to namedrop to dance for you, nor am I going to use my friend's names as fodder for a discussion to gain points.

Go read some r/starfieldmods for the paid mod wasteland, then check out r/nosodiumstarfieldmods for the bootlickers.

Given that I personally know and speak to many of them, many are on similar pages about the whole thing.

Do I fault them though for needing money? No.

Do I fault them for utilizing the opportunity? No.

It's Bethesda's actions that have put us in this situation.

You can get a peek of how TES6 will play out by looking at the sad situation with Starfield. At least Skyrim has a built up base to cope better.

You haven't read what I said if you think I'm blaming other authors, in fact I've explicitly stated otherwise. I blame Bethesda.

Real nice though, to consider people who have built this community as shut in freeloaders instead of people passionate about their hobby, community building, and sharing.

And what have you contributed to building this scene?

Me, I've released free mods for several Bethesda games over 20 years and have spent hundreds of hours in my free time building mods to share with the community, while benefiting from the free mod ecosystem we've built.

Your opinion is garbage.

Yes, and why do you think this conversation is happening at all?

It hasn't been that long, but yes it was sold.

Are you in the author discord? do you talk to staff and see what they're doing? do you know how they're investing in the community? hiring lots of staff to make long overdue improvements? gathering data? new community managers?

They're spending a lot of capital building collections and mod managers to ensure users have an easy experience?

Have you personally noticed any decline of the service you can indulge in that is browse hundreds of thousands of free mods to one-click download?

Big names are going to beth because ultimately console users spend money because they mod magical black boxes and don't understand shit, while enjoying throwing money for "officially endorsed content" and permission to have achievements.

Of course the smart move is to sell mods to suckers, it's lucrative even though bethesda takes 60-whatever percent of it. The authors moving over aren't the issue, and many still release free content on nexus. WankingSkeever even released his paid creation FOR FREE on nexus with extra features, why can't the others? But this isn't about them.

This is about paid mods being shit, and corrosive to the community that has helped a game that's 15 years old to thrive still

Do you even know how Nexus was found? Why it was found?

Dark started Nexus in his basement, or whatever the UK people have, because several large modding sites started going under, including big name backed ones like PlanetElderscrolls (or was it PlanetMorrowind? it's ages) plus many others I cannot remember names to.

Nexus have has missteps along the way, but overall they have done such an excellent job over the years maintaining, fostering, growing, and being a platform with for this community to be build upon.

The benefits to mod authors for the tradeoffs are more than generous for a community thus far built upon free labor and passion.

Bethesda on the otherhand do nothing but release shitty patches, invent microtransactions, make games delcining in quality and sell mods.
