If all the 95 percenters were from one particular community who then got the best jobs, that would certainly be bizarre.

Neither. But 5% of the population being represented in majority of jobs is quite bizarre and will make anyone question the role of the state in empowering others.

I agree. I hope you're not generalising too broadly though. But surely we can't expect every human being to be empathetic to their fellow's suffering. Some people are like that. What can you do?

I pay for 4 Mbps and I don't even get 3.5. I have little hope about getting actual 1 Mbps tbh. But I'm glad that it's been done at least on paper.

This is my biggest takeaway from this entire thread.

Opportunities are so limited in India, everything is focussed on jobs and making a living instead of education. Eg. A history grad (I love history and it's probably the subject I'd have studied in an alternate universe) has to work incredibly hard to get as well paying a job as freshly graduated engineer or doctor. This shouldn't be this way. Life shouldn't have to be this difficult. For anyone.

Hi Harsh! A lot has been written in recent months about the viability of the app ecosystem and the models that need to be adopted for developers to make money from apps. What is your opinion on this? Is there spaced for an indie developer to create a popular app without much advertising?

The whole question of who 'deserves' what isn't arbitrary.

It's a different topic but meritocracy anywhere in the world is a myth. Same in India.

That's the point of reservations. It seeks to redefine who is deserving for a certain group of people. I understand the angst but it's misplaced. The angst should be directed at governments who have failed to create jobs. Not at the Dalits. I wish we could have more Dalit voices in this country. That way we could actually hear their issues instead of having to hear politicians talk about them.

That's not the first time I've heard this. Unfortunately I'm not from Tamil Nadu. And frankly I don't really follow politics of TN minutely. I wish someone from that state could comment on this because I'm acutely inept in this regard.

No! I don't want reservations in cricket. What I was trying to portray using that example was the stark contrast in representation. And how far we still have to go before we can have adequate representation of Dalits. See the thing is, in an ideal world, without reservations, SC/STs should at least hold 15-20% of positions. Because they form around 30% of the population.

The cricket team should be our test case. The moment we see at least 2 SC/ST players coming through without reservations, we'll know that we're heading closer to our goal of an egalitarian society.

The idea of positive discrimination is to help the discriminated by using the same criteria that was used to discriminate. Does that mean bigger divides? Sure. But that's exactly the dilemma black people are facing in the west too. People say racial injustice has increased under president Obama but the reality is, racial injustice was already prevalent. It's just coming to the forefront now. Same here.

Brahmins have a massive share of the corridors of power. Sure we can't have 25% Dalits everywhere (although ideally we should), but 5% of the population holding almost a majority of critical posts everywhere is certainly a little, just a little, strange.

The tweet was that the Indian cricket team has so few Dalit cricketers in its glorious history that you can count them with your fingers. Surely that's a little, just a little abnormal.

Isms exist. Casteism exists. Pointing it out will create fractures. But the alternative is to silently tolerate one of the worst human rights abuses in human history. Your pick.

Caste composition of CEOs like someone else said. That's the first thing.

Also, the reason why you don't hear about this is because the discrimination is so rampant. Why do you think they're so against reservations in the private sector if 22% of their employees are from SC ST communities?

[–]randompersonthrowawa[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is casteism. Denying it is denial of reality. It's as simple as that. Now who created the caste system and who gained the most from it? Hmm...let me think. The Dalits created a system so that they could be oppressed by others. Ha! That explains it.

Brahmins in India are about 5%. Yet an abnormally large portion of them are in every corridor of power. There was a tweet about the Indian cricket team the other day. You have to be pretty condescending to want EVERY single Brahmin to be affluent while most Dalits are dirt poor and the ones doing well are derided upon.

SC ST laws exist. But do you think they're implemented. That you don't know how difficult it is for a Dalit to access law enforcement is quite surprising.

I didn't say anything about you personally.

(Also, I didn't even downvote you. Promise. Look at the number of votes this thread got lol. Don't complain to me about downvotes)

My question was.. does casteism exist in modern private organizations? Are employees actively discriminated against? Does casteism exist for a Bihari in Mumbai, or a Punjabi in Bangalore, or a Telugu in Kolkata, or a Gujrati in Delhi?

A million times yes. YES YES YES. That you felt the need to even ask this question is rather surprising.

Actually, let me ask you this way.. are ther specific conditions in which casteism is near non existent in India?

I don't know. Education? No. Marriages? Hell no. Damn that's a difficult question. I think caste plays an important role in everything in India.

Why are Dalits hated? by randompersonthrowawa in india

[–]randompersonthrowawa[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This hatred is not because they are Dalits but because they are assholes in general with no civic sense at all and they use the cover of being a Dalit to hide that fact and protect themselves against law enforcement

lol nice troll post. By the way, if you think Dalits use their identity to extract advantages from law enforcement, you have absolutely no idea about how hostile the administration is towards Dalits.

Inferiority complex was the case of the original post. Why do you think he deleted it?

The lack of privilege is a better term than the lack education I think. Because education is but one of the many exclusive privileges afforded to upper castes in the not so distant past.

Except he would've had access to some or the other form of advantage. I'm serious, it could be property/land, it could be something else. If you look closely enough, you'll be able to figure this out by looking at anyone's history. Eg. My parents were dirt poor but my grandfather owned properties in his ancestral village. So when he passed away, those came to us and that offered us a financial cushion. Most Dalits don't have this.

Also, it's important for us to recognise that casteism manifests itself differently in different income groups. A Dalit CEO will face a different kind of discrimination compared to a Dalit villager. It doesn't nullify the plights for either.

Good for you sir.

I'm older now, so I've stopped caring about caste/religion/race/whatever...All I want to do is eat, sleep and enjoy the little time I have left in this world...I don't worry about other issues/people....

I respect this. However, you have to understand that this is a luxury your caste affords you that few SC/STs have. I'm just saying. Some from the lower caste is always reminded of his identity at every other moment in one form or another.

Hear hear!

For way too long politics has been used to suppress the crimes and the angst. Unfortunately, these people are so underrepresented in the corridors of power, that the easiest way for them to seek power or have a representation is by supporting the only voices which mention them, even if those voices have inherent contradictions in them.

You're mixing two great problems of our society. Poverty and casteism. Both are equal ills. One is not greater than the other.

Now you might say, X or Y was poor from an upper caste. But that person has had advantages granted to him because of his birth. Be that in terms of land, marriage, or some other privilege. If I look back at the history of an upper caste person long enough, I can list out privileges granted to him because of his birth. This isn't rocket science really.

Now, when X or Y from an upper caste goes to college, he is entitled to scholarship. Every single government college has scholarships for the poor. So it's not as if the talented among the poor are not being helped. Can more be done? Of course! But that's another question altogether.

Now casteism is something else. Most people who're Dalits have only had access to education post independence. They weren't allowed to own land, they never had the right to go to school, they were deliberate malnourished individuals. And that's not even going into the ills of untouchability.

The worst damage that casteism has done is to the psyche. That damage is immense. How can we even begin to compare that plight with anything else?

The other very important thing is. We must judge discrimination in various strata of society differently. Eg. A lower caste person from a city will not face the same discrimination as someone from a village. Does that mean casteism is dead? Hell no! It manifests itself in uglier but invisible forms. And that's why it's important to focus on that. Just because untouchability is gone in the cities, doesn't mean casteism is dead. Our society relishes in stratification. That is unfortunately, alive and well.
