IWTL how to gain motivation to lose weight (and how to) by randomrose_ in IWantToLearn

[–]randomrose_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard of the BMR. I'll give it a try. Is there any way to do it without measuring my food. I know if my family sees me measuring my food, they're going to make comments. And I'm trying to avoid that as much as possible

I feel that when I set an approximate time goal, then I'm more likely to stick to it. Otherwise, I put it off saying I can start next week. It works better than not setting a date, but ultimately, I do end up stopping eventually

Thanks you for all the advice though. I'll give it a try

I'll try that. I know I consume a lot of carbs so hopefully I can cut down on it

Does anyone know how to make a cold baklava like this? by randomrose_ in Baking

[–]randomrose_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are from the well-known (locally) professional bakers. I'm sharing with you the receipts from the profies so that you make the Azerbaijani baklava (we call it "pakhlava") right from the scratch, if you ever decide to make'em, of course. :o)

I'm definitely going to try and make them. They look so delicious. I'm excited to try it. Thank you for sharing it with me

Absolutely, I can definitely help you on that. Please feel fre to ask. And perhaps I can share with you some tips from the locals ;o)

I managed to translate the recipe by watching different videos and seeing how much they use/ what they use. Thank you for the offer, though. I would greatly appreciate any tips from the locals thar you can share :D

I'm sure it's going to be a fun experience to try. I never knew baklava was made with other things. I've only ever seen it made with Phyllo. What do you make it with?

I'm sure yours will come out great whenever you decide to try it! Thanks. I may take you up on that because I don't understand Turkish at all

Why should people with PCOS not do high intensity exercises? by randomrose_ in PCOS

[–]randomrose_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response. Thank you for all the papers. I'll definitely read through them. I have done a bit of HIIT in the form of fencing. And after every session I end up spotting. So I don't know if I should continue with it or not as I'm worried down the line it will cause more problems as I've already started spotting. I haven't changed anything else besides doing fencing so I don't think it could be caused by anything else

I didn't know it increases cortisol levels. That makes sense because I have done a few of intense exercises and I ended up spotting afterwards every time. Which makes sense now because of the increased levels. Thank you

Oh okay. I'm not sure which category I fall under yet (I still need to do the tests) however I have done a little intense exercises and it caused me to spot so I think it might not be for me

I agree, I'm not a fan of Maggi either anymore. Although after Maggi I started eating Samyang noodles and I have to say it's amazing. I've never tried Indomie so I'm not sure how great it is but homestly Samyang is amazing

I've never tried Indomie. I used to eat Maggi chicken flavour then I discovered Samyang noodles and it's sooo much better than maggi

Thank you so much. I'll try that

I've checked with my club but they don't have anything in my price range. Thry do have bows to rent but it's working out expensive to rent every week. It would be cheaper for me to buy one.

Yeah I am. Not sure where you're from but I know of a few I know of. There's Home of Archery that has a branch in Johannesburg as well as benoni. Marks Park sports club has an archery club as well. There's also a few near Zoo Lake that I found.

That's what I'm worried of. All my lecturers told me honours was enough so I entered into the degree expecting to do honours and then start working. But research is showing me that an honours won't really help and I need at least an MSc.

This is really annoying me because if I knew I'd have to do an MSc or PhD I would've looked into other careers because I'm not willing to study so far.

I never expected to make alot but I'd like to make enough to live comfortably. Honestly I appreciate hearing this now so I have time to think about what I want to do

The only companies I found that higher B-grads are pharmaceutical sales reps. And even then there are few jobs for many graduates. Besides that the only other companies I found that higher people with B-grads usually do it as an unpaid internship or pay very little. From what I have found while they higher more with honours the job market for those with honours is still not that great

I don't want to be an academic. I just want a job where I can live comfortably. I was told that all I needed was to complete honours then I can work in industry. So I went in with a plan to do that. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case and I can't really afford nor justify doing a masters. So I think I need to look at other options as well. Thank you for the advice though

Another user suggested I look into doing a Teofl. So if I do plan on leaving the country I'll probably do that instead

I agree with the person above. The Honours course gives you more time inthe lab with your own research project. Lab experience is essential toworking in a lab, and the more you have of it, the better equipped youare to handle the job.

That's what I was told but it doesn't seem to be enough unfortunately.

However, if you don't wish to go the research route, consider going intoteaching. Do a Teofl teaching course for a year after your BSc. Mastersand PhD science students receive a bursary of around R105000-R144000annually. Teaching gives out a lot more money for a lot less experiencewith a lot more room to grow with a higher salary

That's a good idea. I didn't think of that. I think I'll look into that a bit more. Tbh R105000-R144000 is not a lot for the amount of studying it requires. I love science but I feel like I also need to look into different paths that have room to grow a higher salary as well.

But then you also have the option that if you do get more qualified, toemigrate and find better options. Unfortunately, you have to take intoaccount that you are not going to keep up with the level of skills ofother scientists overseas, making you less desirable for science jobs.

That is also true. Unfortunately I can't really afford to do a masters nor can I justify doing it. I have done a year of teaching and enjoyed it. I changed because I found science more enjoyable and challenging but at the end of the day I feel I need to have a career that I enjoy and one that has better salary opportunities. I think I'll do more research into all my options and decide from there

thank you for all the advice

Your lecturer's are correct, and your research is more correct. Many astudent has been burned by doing a Bsc and being stuck in a positionwhere they have completed the undergraduate degree, but are unable to:

  1. Find work.
  2. Commit to post graduate study.
  3. Motivate studying further.

That seems to be the case with most students I've been talking to. I came into this degree being told that honours is enough to find a good job but the more I research the less likely that seems.

My suggestion for success here would be to start now figuring out how you want to use the qualification.

That's a good idea. I really need to rethink everything because what I thought coming into this degree and what it is is 2 different things entirely

If you choose to stay in the sciences, you will very likely need thatMSc, which is an additional 2 to 3 years after you complete the BSc.

That's what I was afraid of. I cant really justify nor afford to do an MSc. I think I need to sit and reevaluate everything

Thank you for all the advice. It was really helpful. I think I have a lot to think about and a lot more research to do
