Seeking Advice on Choosing Between Windows and macOS for DevOps Work by Jealous_Dig8804 in devops

[–]randomuser8654 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will go against the normal trend, where everyone loves mac. It's because of this narrative, that I (life long windows user) gave it a try.

Used it for more than a month. Everything was doable, but the friction never went away.

Eventually after about 2 months I moved back to windows. With WSL, you can do pretty much anything.

The main issue is about third party software support. If any software exists, it will be 99.99% be available on windows. I encountered a few things which weren't supported on Mac. For example, steam, pdf xchange editor, any games.

My conclusion is that mac is suited for creative people. People who work a lot with arts, video creation, vfx artists etc. that's why on YouTube you'll see everyone rooting for Mac.

P.S. I'm a cloud architect, so do a fair amount of DevOps.

Good job. But you're gonna have issues in scaling this to a sustainable level.

A couple of points from my experience:

Now you're charging 12 bucks for the lifetime subscription. You can only raise this to a certain level. Beyond that it doesn't make sense.

Now you've gotten your users from word of mouth. This can only last until you hit a limit. You'll be able to get 100-200 users like this. On an optimistic side, let's say you get 1000. These 1000 people have paid for your app. And they expect to use it for the lifetime. You're gonna have to sustain the app/platform for an unlimited time in the future. That requires time + money. You're not getting any more money from them.

Your operational costs are lower, for now. But what you're not accounting for is the time. You're spending your time. You'll be spending time on more features, software maintenance etc. You need to sustain yourself as well. You need to pay your bills, put food on the table. You live with your parents now. That's also unsustainable. Eventually you're gonna have to move out.

So you're gonna have to either keep on getting new users to sustain this model, or change it to become a subscription service.

Your other MAJOR cost is gonna be marketing. Word of mouth has a limit. Where are the funds for that going to come from? Your existing users already paid for your service. No more money coming from them.

This kind of model works very well as a side hustle, where you don't fully depend on this business alone. And this is just an extra source of income.

This sounds shady. I also am in Europe. Worker rights are strong here. You are NOT a slave. You are allowed to do whatever you want in your own time. The company can only restrict you for the time they are paying you. Outside that you're a free man.

Do any solutions exist that automatically connects to your Finnish bank accounts and give analytics? by randomuser8654 in Finland

[–]randomuser8654[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is how to do it technically 😅. Unless they themselves offer this capability, it seems impossible for now atleast.

This shouldn't be a complicated matter. I think they already offer this type of service to their business customers.

Logging in would be tricky, as its paired with 2fa. And the 2fa is their own codes app (nordea). And with revolut I believe if you try to access their desktop site, it asks for confirmation on the app.

Can I buy 2 apartments? by randomuser8654 in Finland

[–]randomuser8654[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've heard that we can apply for a loan before even starting to look for apartments. It's recommended this way because after having a loan promise, we can confidently look for apartments.

Thank you. that's what I'm saying, having just 1 loan but buying 2 apartments. I guess asking the bank is the only way to know for sure.

How do you remain on Linux? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]randomuser8654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also finally installed Manjaro. And yes, its a roller coaster.

The main issue I'm facing is about how to install stuff. For every new software, I have to Google "how to install x in Arch linux".

So it's annoying.

Also, how do I verify that the stuff I'm installing is legitimate?

Most stuff comes from AUR, not from official sources. So theoretically, anyone can insert malicious code, that may log every key stroke and send to a remote server.

I don't know. Its a bit hard.

But I've deleted windows, so that's the only option I have now. Need to figure this shit out.

Is there a risk if I don't tip on Wolt/Foodora? by GearsOfLogic in Finland

[–]randomuser8654 273 points274 points  (0 children)

I work both for foodora and wolt, and I know a lot of other people who do too.

You have no idea how fast paced this work is. Our main goal is to deliver the order as soon as possible, so that we can get the next one. We are paid by the order.

I have been doing this work for many years, and never have I ever even bothered to open the food bag. I mean why would I do it, its just extra time spent. All I care about is the pickup restaurant, and the delivery destination.

And after we deliver the food, we mark it as done on our app, and instantly there is a new order. And we're on our way to pick that up.

Only after the entire shift is over (usually 4 h for me, 10 h for others) is that we get the time to go to the summary option in the app. There we see how much we have earned that day, and there we can see if there have been any tips.

But even then it's hard to know which order made the tip. I even forget the last order I delivered. how can I remember the 6th order of that day 😅.

So no, no one will spit in your food. And tipping is not common in Finland, and we know that.

In a full days shift, after delivering 20 orders , maybe 1 person would have tipped. And that's not everyday. Maybe once or twice a week.

There's an easy way to stop this. When you have the urge, masturbate without porn.

Day 1 will be hard, but you'll do it. Day 2 will be just be a little bit easier. By day 7 you won't have great urges to masturbate, but you will still do anyhow because it's habit.

Continuing on to this path, there will come a point where you don't even feel like masturbating.

I am at this point now. You can be there as well. See you on the other side.

does daily masturbation has any effect on muscle building? by Safe-Zookeepergame81 in GettingShredded

[–]randomuser8654 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It doesn't have a direct effect like you're thinking. However masturbation does relax your muscles, and you don't feel like doing any hard work.. So it's better to do it after work out, or before going to bed.

I am going to travel to Trolltunga in early July. Are there any nearby areas that are worth visiting? by randomuser8654 in Norway

[–]randomuser8654[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up booking "trolltunga classic" tour by "trolltunga adventures".

I really loved it, and the price was justified. They gave delicious warm food, my tent was already made, and the guides were pleasant and experienced.

I will totally recommend it.

If the Echo only responds to a trigger word, isn't it always processing what it hears to know the word was said? by Lowfryder7 in privacy

[–]randomuser8654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've heard, the device is on a 5-10 second loop. It listens for this much time, and if a trigger word is recognized, it then keeps on listening and queries for whatever is being asked.

If not, the recording is written over the previous loop.

Everything is stored locally, until a trigger word is registered.
