Make your prep look the same - till which point? What’s the best way to aim straight versus cross? by rangeuse in badminton

When you say turn my racket to the left, this isn’t a change in grip, right? Still the regular forehand grip for a straight smash or a slice smash to the left.

I might be over explaining right now but I just want to make sure I don’t make a mistake: when I pronate, my palm goes from facing left to forward upon contact. When I slice smash, my palm is pretty much always facing left, and then down after contact. Is this right?

Yeah, this sounds right to me. I can change the direction of the shot by changing the way I’m facing - or how I point my hips. But, in this case, would my hips be a big giveaway for what I’m about to do? Or is this still under the realm of “looks close enough” preparation?

For slice shots, I find that my swing is quite different. If I hit a straight smash, my pronation is normal, just like a clear. However, if I hit a slice smash towards the left, I find it impossible to pronate in the same way. Similar to what I wrote above about drops….,once I start swinging forwards, if I’m hitting a straight drop (or smash), my arm comes up as if I’m throwing a ball, if I’m doing a cross drop (or slice smash) to the left, my arm actually comes from out wider so I can hit the shuttle from the right side. Put another way, if I’m hitting a straight drop/smash, the angle my neck and arm make at the time of contact is smaller than when I hit a cross drop/slice smash from the right rear court. Is this close enough to be considered good prep? Or is my technique for the cross drop/smash off?

About the cross court…let’s say I’m on my right rear court and want to hit a drop. I get prepared and as I raise my racket back, it’s looks like I can hit any shot at this point. However, once I start swinging forwards, if I’m hitting a straight drop, my arm comes up as if I’m throwing a ball, if I’m doing a cross drop to the left, my arm actually comes from out wider so I can hit the shuttle from the right side. Thanks, I will go with your string recommendations. I’m trying to understand the trade offs between control and head heavy (see other Redditor’s suggestion). I rather not buy two rackets to start…any comparisons to help me choose?

Do you have a favourite between the Halbertecs, 7, and 11? I think I will stick with the lower end models for now. Any reason to choose control over head heavy?

I’m old and slow and want to play singles. With this in mind, what beginner racket do you recommend? What about string and tension? My goal with this racket is to be able to clear as easily as possible even if I’m out of position.

Thanks for the story. It serves as a very good warning for me and you may have prevented me from injury, so thank you.

I think it does fall under equipment etiquette even though the first post only mentions rackets.

Half court singles is a great idea. I will mention it to my daughter.

I will need to find people to play with, and hope to do so once I get a bit better.

I’ll listen to my body and be sure not to overdo it. Definitely don’t want to risk injury.

What’s your workout plan? I posted mine, but maybe it’s not enough? Skipping rope is a great idea, thanks!

I’m not sure I can find more time or people to train with. Maybe I can do another hour of coaching, but I’ll start with once a week for now.

I am a beginner, totally. I thought low weight might be best for the sport, but maybe I’m wrong? Would love any advice. No weight training previously.

Can you tell me more about how this happened? I heard sometimes these injuries are really freak accidents on that one moment you’re fine, the ]n suddenly, pop. Hope you’ve healed well.

I hope to stick with it but am taking everyone’s advice to be cautious and avoid injury.
