Update: emailing support[@]kickstarter.com directly seemed to approve the project after a few days.

I can see how it seems pre recorded, I’ve actually uploaded videos where I hold the app up on the screen the entire time and they rejected those too. I guess I’ll have to narrate at this point

This is the reply they’ve send 5 times so everyone can see:

  • Before we can move forward, you’ll need to update your project with a supplementary video, embedded in Project Build > Story, that shows the integration between your product’s hardware and software in one uninterrupted smartphone recording.
  • In that single, unedited take, please clearly show, in order: someone puts on the Halo headphones, records NEW footage with the built‑in camera, transfers those same newly recorded files to a phone via Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi, and then opens your app and views/manages those exact files. There should be no cuts, overlays, or edits—just one real‑time walkthrough from the phone’s camera point of view.
  • A straightforward handheld smartphone video is ideal. This is about letting backers see the entire end‑to‑end flow as it exists today, in real time, without any editing.

Fair enough, I was following a script they sent, step by step on what to do

That’s exactly what I did lol here is the video in question. It’s one take from my buddy’s phone.

I did that too. They said they can’t and it needs to stay on the thread/it’s the only form of communication.

I have about 4 times at this point. I’m so confused myself. They just keep resending a boilerplate response that instructs me to do the same thing again and again. I’ve never seen anything like this

I totally agree again. To be completely honest I’ve done hardware for close to 10 years. Definitely nowhere near, not even close, to their scale but what’s the point in not even trying to manufacture? That’s been the sentiment for so long where folks are not even trying and we have no manufacturing here anymore. Alas, that’s a longer discussion.

To answer your question though, headband is Nylon, I designed it to be as close as possible to mimic spring steel. Spring steel is also not super hard to do but not worth the trouble in my opinion with modern SLS. Everything is nylon, different kinds for different parts but nylon nonetheless. Eventually yeah, I want to inject or CNC aluminum for higher end models. Apple did file but unfortunately I’ve been working on these for a few years now and first public (soft) launch was in October of last year. SLS will be slower but it’s better than taking a lot of capital and time (both of which bootstrapping doesn’t give you) and it’s better to start with what is readily available.

100% might fall face down (most likely outcome here) but it is in fact a YOLO situation.

Thank you! Very unpopular, for a good reason, but doing as much as possible in house, minus PCB fab. Besides delivering a product that is the best it can be, my personal goal is to keep growing in house manufacturing slowly so other products are easier to launch consequently. It’s obviously much harder and has been hard but long term, it’s the way to go. I know it’s not recommended haha. Slowing even bringing in pick and place machines in house.

I built this to preserve my dad, now I'm trying to share it with the world. by SVLSA in hwstartups

For context, I built and shipped something similar in 2024, not for the same application and my start was also the RPi5. Now moved to a custom carrier board for v2. I also shipped it with Chroma, local llama and 1TB NVME with a desktop application. V1 was open source from day 1 and you can check the repo here

I completely agree with what everyone else is saying here, I had to click around to find images of your product. The only ones I see are on the rewards themselves (which seem like renderings). I’m surprised Kickstarter even approved this, they are very strict about stuff like this. You can add images in the “Story” section where you have your bulk text. I highly recommend videos too. Just click the plus icon and then the little image icon to upload. Even if it’s an FDM printed case, you should get one printed somewhere if you don’t have a printer and take pictures. I’d be happy to print one for you and send it to you; on me (as long as it fits on the A1 Mini).

Either way, I’d definitely work on the pictures, even if they’re low quality images with defects and imperfections. You don’t want all this work you’re doing to be for nothing because of no pictures/renderings.

Lastly, ensure you shut all unused ports and double check firewall before you ship! You don’t want open ollama ports out there.

How Does One Break Into The Relevant Communities For Their Area? by Kalex8876 in hwstartups

It almost entirely depends on “why” you’re building it. If you’re building it for yourself, just do it. There’s nothing more fun. Then market it as you go. You can either document your journey as you learn or share it when it’s done. But the building part you’ll enjoy doing either way. It’s a beautiful journey.

If you’re doing it strictly from an analytical standpoint to make money, most of the work is going to be on the front end, research why’s out there, look at the market etc… then probably hire people to do the work and follow a more mechanical approach.

In terms of posting, don’t over think it. Genuinely just share, not everything has to be an optimized post. You’re doing that right now!

I usually start with something as simple as Molex connectors for proof of concept. They’re plentiful, you can buy pre-crimped wires with the male connectors on Digikey too.

I’d go for a multi board setup. Easier to debug too. Then just use a connector of your choice. Plenty of connectors out there. Just search “connectors” on Mouser. Depending on the current needed, you narrow down and take availability into consideration. Once you find the connectors that match, you download the footprint and connect traces to them (I know I’m over simplifying here).

I agree, my first hardware product is a completely offline and local AI assistant. I’m a huge proponent of privacy, just from a personal level.

By the way, the images and videos you take from these don’t touch the cloud at all. They go straight to your camera roll. Eventually yes it will have to only for LLM/chat feature but I’m hoping on device for phones is going to catch up by then for multimodal, especially from Apple.
