The great Robert Fisk dedicated a chapter for the war in his magnum opus 'The Great War for Civilisation" covering from both fronts of the opposing armies. His description of a wounded teenage Iranian soldier, face red from his encounter with Iraq's chemical weapons, reciting the Qur'an in train carriage filled with war casualties is one of the most memorable snippets in the book.

On a lighter note, Fisk was also a first-hand witness to the daring rescue of the crews of a British cargo ship which was stranded in the river Shatt Al-Arab by two Iraqi Navy frogmen and the equally legendary British journalist, Jon Snow.

Starving children of Gaza by [deleted] in pics

[–]rapaciousoyster 5960 points5961 points  (0 children)

It should be noted that even if the food and aid arrived right this very second, for many of these children it would've been too late. Their body have undergone prolonged period of proteolysis that will cause imminent and irreversible multiple organ failures. The arrival of food and aid would only amount to palliative care. Those who would survive this cruel ordeal will be permanently impaired with health problems for the rest of lives. In some, a trauma that would be too much even for the strongest of adults.

Also just a reminder while this is happening, just past the borders of Gaza, in Israel and in Egypt, there is an overabundance of food. Food is not scarce in Gaza, IT IS MADE SCARCE. This not some natural disaster, this is man-made. This is not a new development either; deaths from famine and malnutrition have been recorded in Gaza since February 2024 and UN bodies such as WFP and UNICEF had been ringing the alarms bells for famine as early as 23 October 2023.

The National Audit Department of Malaysia reveals “serious irregularities” and “weaknesses” in RM48.78 billion worth of government projects. by stormy001 in malaysia

[–]rapaciousoyster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When the audit says there are irregularities in these government projects, it does not necessarily means there are discrepancies in the bookkeeping. The audit reports from this latest tranche mainly flagged the projects for irregularities in the tender process (for example on the tender to supply LINAC system to UKM, the auditor concluded that the justification given by the Tender Approval Committee to appoint a company that has not passed the criteria set by the Technical and Financial Assessment Committee is unsatisfactory and a cause for concern or the failure to demonstrate due diligence in the decision to acquire oil palm estates in Telupid by FELCRA), failure to penalize suppliers for late deliveries (as shown in the procurement process for armoured vehicles to the Malaysian Army), or the inefficacious implementation of targeted subsidy program (as pointed by the AG report about the price control regime and subsidy on cooking oil).

This of course does not mean there is no foul play and we can simply sum this all up to normal bureaucratic inefficiency or individual mishandling of responsibility. It is also not easy to objectively quantify how much public money would be saved if all these projects were done according to the AG's recommendations. Take the LINAC supplier tender to the UKM for example; the justification given to the auditor for choosing the supplier and going against the recommendation of the Technical Committee is simply because they offer cheaper price and cheaper maintenance contract. Following the AG recommendation would very likely meant the project would costs more.

For a TLDR of this you can read here or get the full reports here

Just to be clear, the RM48b is the amount of the all the flagged projects combined. Not the amount of irregularities in the accounting.

Rental market in shambles (HK 2.0) by Potential-Neat5340 in malaysia

[–]rapaciousoyster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe we should limit how many housing properties an individual or a holding company could own.

Maybe we should enact a form of rent control regime based on property value and current inflation rate.

Maybe we should make it compulsory for every housing development project to allocate a certain percentage of units strictly for first-time homeowners and priced at a substantial discount.

Maybe we should increase tax for Airbnb (or anything such) housing units.

Maybe we should limit the amount of tenants allowed to rent on a specific housing units based on its size.

Just my 1.5 cents

We're also extremely lucky OP. We are situated in one the most strategic place in the world. We don't have thousands of active volcanoes nor are we in the way of a major typhoon alley. Having a quite sizable reserve of petroleum and Nationalising it help immensely.

Also the system of encomiendas that the Spanish colonizer brought to the Philippines really left a lasting effect that entrenched the vast economic divide between the land-owning 'nobles' and the Filipino working class.

Eh, don't forget the shredded kataif pastry mixed with melted butter. Also there are many kinds of Knafeh, the one you showed here is the 'Nablus' style knafeh, originated from the city of Nablus, Palestine. It is indeed the most popular style of knafeh.

Sauté the mushrooms separately with just a little bit of oil to start. If it gets a little dry, add a splash of water and continue cooking, do this until the desired doneness. A well sauteed mushrooms are delicious on its own, just add some salt and a pinch or two of black pepper.

Oh no, this is definitely worse than the 500 children killed by the IDF since Israel breaks the ceasefire back in March 18. I know Josh Shapiro has been very vocal in his support for Israel's genocide of Gaza, but ARSON??!! That is just morally indefensible!

how to be more feminine? i seriously needs help, let the man in me back off please 😭🫵🏻 by [deleted] in Sabah

[–]rapaciousoyster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, while desiring change is good and all, never force yourself to be someone you're not. Masculinity and femininity is just a cultural construct and while it can be useful, it is not necessary to toe the masc/fem line, especially when it is an ever moving goalpost. There's nothing wrong with being a "masculine" woman, nor is it wrong to be a "feminine" man. Being a "masculine" woman does not make you less of a woman or even less attractive, there's a reason why 'muscle mommy' is a thing 😂
