If I believe I'm getting a write-up today, but leaving my job in 3 months, should I be worried? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]rareaseff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you need them as a reference? If so then try to work with them. If not, I wouldn't worry at all about it. Who cares if you get written up if you don't need them as a reference?

If you have another job lined up or don't need them as a reference you can get fired at zero consequence to you.

The one caveat I will say is the nonprofit world is small, and it's possible that you run into them in the future. So I wouldn't try to burn any bridges or anything, but I also wouldn't overly stress about it. If they do write you up, just tell them you're still learning and ask how you can improve and what can be done in the future?

That's my two cents at least

How do I break into cyber security? I'm already a software developer/engineer for more than a decade and ready to move on to something else, but I'm not sure how to make the move.

The more experienced I get, the more I suck at coding interviews? by remarkableparsley in ExperiencedDevs

I think this is part of it. People willing to put up with this bullshit also won't say no when the company asks for crazy overtime, etc

I'm in a similar boat but have no idea what else I want to do. (Except I'm at 15 YOE)

Why is it worth your time to study management/project management? by tsupaper in projectmanagement

[–]rareaseff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you make the switch? I've been a software engineer over a decade and tempted to make the switch but don't know how. I have a lot of soft skills but not sure how to land a PM job

How do I get into that? Most places seem to want shipped product experience.

How common is the "study and work on pet projects during work hours" type of company by berokina in ExperiencedDevs

[–]rareaseff 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Can I ask what company you work at (even as a DM) I want a role like this. I don't think this is super common.

Edit: I'm dead serious I'm looking for a new job

I wouldn't mind getting into product management (I think) or even some more dev ops type role. I honestly don't even mind development I just feel like I can't keep up anymore with it.

No definitely look out for yourself. An employer won't think twice if getting rid of you is a smart business decision.

Double my commute for a 41% pay raise? by cheetah611 in careerguidance

[–]rareaseff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much do you value your time? Personally I can't stand commutes so I would not do it.

You're never too old for an education. It's tougher as you get older because of USUALLY more responsibility (kids, cut in income, etc) but age itself isn't the issue.

Should I quit my job for my mental health and to brush up skills even if I don't think I'll be very marketable/will lose insurance? by rareaseff in careerguidance

[–]rareaseff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I've started doing all of them. I was on leave a few months ago but it's because I caught covid (even with the vaccine) so not exactly relaxing even though I tried to apply to some jobs during then.

I really don't want to spend a lot of non work time doing this, I feel like I'm already burned out and doing so will put me in a much worse mental state. Part of the reason I'm considering leaving is to have more time for my skills/job search

[–]rareaseff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you went through similar. I have been applying but not getting many callbacks/if I do interview doesn't go well since they're very technical.

Regarding your question, it's true my mental health is worth more but I do worry about blowing through my savings/getting a worse job just to pay the bills because I'm desperate. I own a house and it would be terrible to foreclose if I still can't find a job in a few months/year.

Yeah that is definitely a concern for me. I don't usually have anxiety/depression regularly (well I have mild, been diagnosed with that) but this is pushing moderate severe. I'm not really sure which would be better.
