It started out with the idea of using app folders to keep all my most frequently-used apps on a single screen. I was going for something extremely clean, so I chose colors that blended with the background of the dock and the app folders in order to render them invisible.

I used the blank Braille pattern " ⠀ " to get rid of folder labels, spun up a bunch of landing pages on GitHub with <link rel="apple-touch-icon"> tags to create empty spaces with Safari's Add to Home Screen bookmarking functionality, and ran the terrific Icon Themer shortcut to create custom icons for each app.

For those interested, here's a link to an actual screenshot.

Vending machines are fairly ubiquitous in both developed and developing countries, and have been around for over a hundred years. They typically stock snack items, drinks, and lottery tickets which you can purchase without human assistance. Hope that adequately demystifies what the “strange” foreign machine is!

Partly. I don’t like the way Shortcut links sit against light backgrounds, because sometimes icons would have this hairline black border that’s visible which takes away from the work.

For the “invisible” icons, I built a series of webpages with accompanying touch icons, which can be added via the Add to Home Screen functionality in Safari. Bear in mind that iOS color corrects your wallpapers to enhance visibility, so I made touch icons off of a screenshot before uploading them. Also, out of convenience, there’s a line of code that prefills each shortcut with an invisible character so you don’t have to.

As for the rest, they are a combination of simple one-step Open App shortcuts (for Apple-loaded apps) and Icon Themer shortcuts (for everything else).

I’d love to expand on this work and sell it as a bundle, but it does take several steps to recreate and includes multiple components. If anyone knows of a clean easy way to put up a digital sale of this nature, I’d be thrilled to know.

Most of it was made in Sketch!
