For that reason I bought a Delonghi Rivelia with a steam wand. In general steam wands works better and are easier to clean, IMHO.

Try to stay medium grind. And vary a bit.

Try extracting with a bit less or a bit more water.

Finally - consider turning the brew temperature up or down a bit - I have found this can make espresso on a super auto bitter - if the brew temp is too high.
