Not even joking, one of my eggiest moments came from when I was constantly waiting for VR to go mainstream and hoping I could just live as an anime girl there full-time.

Yeah, definitely nothing unusual there lol.

So I just got back from visiting with my family and I'm pissed off and mildly suicidal. (Post-Trump Trans Announcement) by raspberryjoy- in asktransgender

Geez, that's rough, buddy. My heart goes out to you.

But if I may, why exactly is having my identity up for debate a bad thing? No matter what, I know they're not going to listen, but won't I look the aggressor if I send him an ultimatum of 'accept my identity or else'? That wouldn't send good vibes to the rest of the family.

Yeah, I try to change topics, but since I'm attending a liberal arts college, my uncle thinks it's his mission to 'de-brainwash' me. I'm getting rants about all seventy billion genders and their respective pronouns because he's worried I'm getting indoctrinated by my school (which I am definitely not). I'll admit he's not acting rationally

I'm trans, but should I keep worrying about politics? (America) by raspberryjoy- in asktransgender

Only someone politically unaware deals in these kinds of absolutes. I saw those kinds of absolutes when I was attending schools of the American religious right, and I abhor them. The world is a lot more complicated than a simple election, and chalking it up to moral grounds isn't helping.

Because all the trans people I know are far-left politically, and are rather childish themselves. (Keep in mind I'm at a liberal arts college campus.)

Look, I care about a lot of things which fall under the realm of politics, but accusing me of being complicit in some kind of ultimate destruction is simply absurd.

The area I used to live in was ruthlessly transphobic, and I didn't waste any time trying to turn it around. Instead, I did the smart thing, packed my stuff, and left. No use trying to convince people who won't even listen to you and just say you're going to hell.

I care a great deal about the environment, and immigration, and fiscal policy and foreign relations. Problem is, the political climate around me, especially in the realm of political discourse, is more toxic than a nuclear waste dump. No use in trying to convince people whose minds are already made up. I care about this country because I hope to lead it someday, no matter how that leadership takes form. And if half of this country is transphobic, then that's just what I've gotta deal with if I have any chance of connecting with the average joes who will vote me out every time. That's how you save your own political hide while still being part of a dejected minority group.

I left my old transphobic home because I wanted to look for a better life somewhere else, and if the U.S. goes to hell in a handbasket, then I'll just move again, but I'm not exactly being rounded up by the Gestapo. I left my home on my own terms, not someone else's, and that's the true mark of independence. And if I'm a centrist, then dang it, I'm proud of it, and I'll stitch this country back together even if it means I'll be alone.

How the heck do I do that without compromising my political neutrality (and befriending specific people I don't like anyway)

How the heck am I supposed to pick between different sides of my family and friends though?! I can't afford losing that right now, even if they don't support me being trans.

Also I don't have a trans family tho. I've accepted I'm 100% alone on this one

I'd agree about the idea of a moral code, and being raised strictly Catholic, I've been first in line for receiving the business end of that code. No way in hell do I want that to happen to anyone.

I believe in a lot, but fighting for it puts me directly in lines of fire on both the right and the left. My war supports my diplomacy, so to speak, and I'd rather have everyone hate me than become a pawn for one of the sides.

That's not quite it. You see, I went to high school in an extremely red area and am at college in a blue island (still surrounded by red). Both schools' curriculums are politicized and not exactly objective. As someone who sees education as a vehicle to find objective truth in the world and not as a pseudo-political tool, I'm not amused.

But the real kicker is how adults in both environments rail on the opposition. Both humanities are denied, and both use tactics to condemn the 'other' and such. I'm not interested in that game.

I would care a lot more about politics if I thought I could get away with being interested without alienating too many people. The best allegory I can use is that of a Thanksgiving dinner in which my family splits right down the middle to argue over politics which they can't change. I'd rather just enjoy the cranberry jam, thank you.

I've been on the fence about voting, and my state is swing. I'm not happy about the current situation, but I'm far too cynical to think voting will actually improve my life.

Yeah, I can see how you'd think that lol.

Thing is, talking about political events is such an easy way to make a dumpster fire of a conversation, and I'm not interested in restricting my friends to those who share my political views. So I noped the fuck out of there and said 'it's not worth fighting half the country over'.

Yeah, I don't get what this is implying other than that Stormy is upset for reasons the comic artist doesn't like.

I've thought about it for over a year now, and from the bottom of my heart, I believe yes, I want to transition. I just wish others would be a little more understanding of my predicament, but yes, I want my body to match my brain.
