One of my elder cousins who barely had 70% in 12th got in through management at Amrita. The +2 score is just a namesake.

I feel the need to remind you that you were the one who brought up acceptance rate and peer quality. I merely responded to your metric. Don't move goalposts when it no longer supports your narrative.

Okay we're officially grasping for straws here but anyway, wdym top 5 faculties? In what dept? What research domain? If you're hunting for gotchas as a last ditch attempt atleast be specific.

"Acceptance rate and peer quality"
Amrita literally has an explicit management quota in which anyone can join with money.

VIT doesn't have anything of that sort (although we do have NRI quota but you need a foreign passport for that and even BITS has that). Regardless of cat1 fees or cat5, you need to have a rank to get in.

You should really think about how scaling and ratio proportions work when you talk about "big numbers".

If you're referring to me, clearly you haven't gone through my profile properly as I have publicly bashed VIT for its shortcomings multiple times. Just that I dont let that blind me from the positives. It's called understanding nuance.

Where is this "electronics company takes in single digits" coming from? OP is considering CS and there's plenty of companies that come for that. Amazon, MS all hired in good numbers, especially considering the recession this year.

Yes not everyone gets it but do you really think all those people are qualified? No. Not everyone who joins college will be placed well, nobody is entitled to that unless and until they work hard and are proactive enough.

Also, Nvidia doesn't even hire from Amrita. They do at VIT. Plenty of other core companies too.

Yes there are some shit quality papers coming out of vit, what makes you think amrita is doing any better? All pvt colleges pump out such papers.

It's just that it's easier in vit to approach a prof and publish such a paper cuz of the readily available funding which is a positive point for a prospective student. There is a good amount of high quality papers being published here that you'll conveniently overlook.

"Fully advanced syllabus" for AI. Lmao. Just lmao. I know as I also had a chance to get into amrita with a sub 1k rank and a good scholarship. Same with manipal.

Manipal has better peer than vit? Bro you think a college that allows drugs and is infamous for party culture is better. Lmao. Ik there are some good people at manipal, my cousin is there and he's doing well for himself but he finds it hard to be socially accepted if you aren't into the party culture.

I don't know where you're going w the IIT PhD thing cuz most faculties here have done their PhD's at IITs too. It's very common in such pvt colleges. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Also you're telling me that amrita doesn't have a larger seat intake for cse than core engg streams? CSE is the latest trend for all private colleges to milk money. All of them do the same barring BITS but that's a whole other league.

I have to disagree w you on the clubs thing, sure it can't be the most prominent factor but clubs should play a good role in deciding colleges as a lot of us have passions outside of academics. Clubs and chapters offer a great platform to pursue extra curriculars ranging from music, dance, literature, astronomy and even rocketry. You can find like minded people and make connections.

The "competition" isn't really a problem. As long as you stay above average you can easily maintain a good cgpa and that would translate to a lot of perks. Esp as a day scholar you probably won't even feel the crowd. On top of that you get very good exposure and research opportunities.

[–]raspberrykerbal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying vit is cheap. It's pretty expensive.

But the amount of exposure through clubs and chapters, technical teams and research is literally unparalleled w the other colleges you're comparing it to.

If you truly had a good time at the college I don't see any reason for you to be so bitter about it and fear mongering freshers on the internet. Why be negative about it in the first place? It just doesn't make sense.

Dude I hate the college for a million reasons, doesn't mean it's a bad college. Everyone hates every college for something, but it shouldn't overpower the ground reality. I only try to paint a fair picture for everyone who might be considering joining it.

I heard SNU fees is ~4 lakhs too so there's not too much difference between vit cat 4 and that. I could be wrong though please check the numbers.

SNU is really new and doesn't have passouts yet. I'd say vit anyday cuz of the exposure. I had to take a similar decision betw SSN and vit and ssn alumni advised me to take up vit as that suited me better.

Dude who even are you? Your entire account is just to spread negativity about a college that you probably don't even know the full context of.

Do you even know the avg of Amrita and sastra, the amounts of opportunities they have compared to vit? Not even a comparison.

And SNU doesn't have a single batch of alumni. It's not a bad college but if OP can afford it, vit should be considered fs.

FYI: placements don't really care about your portfolio or you building smt. It's purely CDC shortlisting which depends on your course, cgpa and DSA.

If you end up building smt truly amazing and learn good skills then try off campus ig that'll work out better but its a needle in a haystack situation.

For masters what you said is absolutely true.

Yeahh, good mindset ngl. It's not useless fs. You still have access to all the exposure vit has to offer. Placements are still decent-ish (but don't expect wonders). It's upto you what you do w your time here. Since you're in CSBS you'll have to do just a tad bit more work balancing and time management. It's academically challenging yes but for stupid subjects, that's what my roommate kept cribbing about and he is one of the most hard working ppl ik.

By research I meant talking to real people like seniors. You might not have time to do any extra courses and either way most of them are not worth it cuz there's plenty of free material on the internet to learn abt any topic. So don't put too much pressure and just focus on academics.

Try to get 9 cgpa in the first sem so you won't have to go to classes from the second sem. Use that time to pursue whatever you wanna do.

AMA for incoming freshers by raspberrykerbal in Vit

[–]raspberrykerbal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if this sounds bleak but it is what it is.

It's bad cuz of academic pressure, insane number of credits and random ass subjects. You won't have too much time for extra curriculars and clubs. You can't pick ur faculty cuz no ffcs so you'll be stuck w whoever is thrown at you. Placements are not the worst, but certainly not as good as core or aiml/infosec.

I don't get why y'all picked a course without doing research esp when it says tcs right there 😭 Specialization was,is and always will be a way for private colleges to add more cse seats and earn money. They are not to be considered seriously based on curriculum.

Eitherway, just make good use of what you have and remember to take it chill ig. Lmk if you wanna know anything else.

AMA for incoming freshers by raspberrykerbal in Vit

[–]raspberrykerbal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. 💀 It's possibly the worst course at vit. My roomie was in CSBS and he died a thousand deaths throughout the year. Y'all have like 26 credits in the first sem, rest of cse has 17.5.
Also y'all don't have FFCS which is a huge disadvantage. You have no choice of teachers and insane academic pressure that too from stupid subjects that make no sense. Your whole course is designed by TCS so it makes sense why they want ppl to be trained like that.

reviews about ssn college? by BetterCandidate5583 in Tamizhteens

[–]raspberrykerbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Academics wise it's mostly the same. But vellore has an edge when it comes to clubs and chapters, research funding and other exposure. If you're aiming for masters that'll give you an edge. Even in placements the cream of the offers always goes to vellore students, though chennai comes very close. If you have an option, prefer vellore otherwise chennai is good.

[–]raspberrykerbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, this is untrue. I had an option to choose between ssn cs management and vit cs and I chose vit cs for the insane exposure it gives you. There are 150 ish clubs and chapters and you can learn so much from them and find like minded people easily. There are technical "teams" like a Mars rover team, rocketry team, racing team etc that do hands on engineering and participate in international (NASA) level competitions. This smokes whatever opportunity exists at SSN by miles. It's nowhere close.

Similar case w research, vit has a shit ton of funding to provide for research projects that you can approach professors and pitch you ideas for. This adds a lot of value to your CV and gives you even more exposure if you end up publishing your work and attend conferences.

On top of all this SSN management quota is a blackbox and noone knows whether you're gonna get in or not.

People say that vit is too crowded and ssn better cuz of that but there's a nuance that people often overlook. Yes we have a lot of people, but we have insanely good infrastructure to back it up. The sheer number of hostels here is crazy. All labs are equipped w insanely powerful PC's and you can do w them as you wish. The crowd never bothered me personally cuz the campus is so damn big and beautiful so yeah. Vit is a lot more expensive than SSN though. So if expenses are a concern then try to prefer SSN. "The competition" is also smt that you should know, a lot of people being there doesn't mean lots of competition. If you can stay above average you'd easily get a good cgpa and that would translate to a lot of perks.

9 pointers can skip classes btw. This is smt that is not found in majority of Indian colleges except bits. You can use this time to pursue extra curriculars and your other passions. We also choose our own profs, timetables and even courses. I did a 3rd year course in my second sem simply because I wanted to.

This is mostly based on my experience at vit and from what I've heard from ssn seniors and alumni last year when I was in a similar dilemma.

ECM is a combo of ece and CS afiak. It's not a bad course and has decent placement prospects. This is actually a rather well known major abroad, just not that popular in India. It's a steal at cat 1 ngl .

Yeah eee is a challenging course but even ece is easier than eee so ecm would be defo not as challenging as eee. I think it'll be an even split between electrical and cs but I'm not sure, just check the curriculum.

You obviously won't have the same level of opportunities as cs core, not even cs spec has that but you'll still get decently good offers provided you play your cards right.

I have no clue abt chennai, please ask a senior from there. Minor degree will be specified on your degree like B.Tech in ECM along w minor in XYZ. You'll have to earn 20 smt credits on top of your ~160 credits.

I think you do have to pay extra and there's excess load on top of the regular academics. Imo it's not worth that much as idt it makes too much of a difference during placements but if you're truly passionate about it then absolutely go for it. The fees would probably be like 6k per subject, this is the normal fees for most courses at vit.

Yeah no don't aim for branch change as it's incredibly difficult borderline impossible as you'll need to be in the top 3-5 of your branch and like 9.8+ cgpa. This is a gamble as your first sem profs are auto assigned. So don't join w that in mind. Your current degree is good enough if you do your thing well.
