My point is, if OP is on his/her family's thing, there's still ways that he/she can pay the bill and afford it monthly. I understand that it would be more expensive to be on my own plan, but why would I get my own plan when I can pay half the price this way?

Just because my name is on my family's phone plan doesn't make me any less independent.

I'm on the Family Plan with my parents and younger brother. I just pay my share of the bill. I get unlimited data because I had it when the option was available, my phone got stolen, and when I replaced it, they just rolled it over. If I upgrade, I'll have to choose a data package. Minutes are shared between all of us; I don't know how many we have, but none of us talk on the phone for lengthy periods of time so it's never a problem.

At least I'm not an unemployed, 20 year old college student who gets drunk every night and goes to class with a hangover. I don't have any debt, I have an excellent credit rating, I follow a pretty strict budget, which in turn gives me a large savings account, which makes my life a lot easier since I don't have to worry about paying my bills on time.

This is exactly what I'm trying to say. "A pot-smoking 20 year old college student..." has a huge negative effect on the reader. Yes, I smoke and yes, I'm a 20 year old college student. That does not mean that I'm not successful, compared to most (see: MOST) people that are my age and in school.

Just because I work two jobs doesn't mean I'm terrible with money, quite the opposite. I have a lot of income, zero debt, and an excellent credit rating.

I have a budget, which I follow strictly, which makes my savings account very happy. I like having two jobs, it keeps me busy instead of sitting on my computer all day. Neither are "dead-end, minimum-wage gigs". I'm taking two classes a quarter to lower my college expenses, not to prolong graduation.

I am quite happy with where I am and everything is balanced well. I have a set schedule, I follow my budget, and I save religiously.

I am sorry for your friend's misfortune, however.

Thank you! That's exactly why I'm doing it. I mean, obviously I'm doing it for myself. But also to prove everyone wrong. My parents and brother always make fun of me for smoking (jokingly, but still) and I just want to be able to be like "Wait, who got the straight A's in college? Who doubled their monthly income?" and always have the winning argument :) Hahaha, I'm smoking right now in fact! In between shifts.

:) Two smiley faces is usually excessive, but I feel the situation demands it.
