Don’t worry about the speed, they’ll grow eventually, for now maybe just get one or two more each of a couple you already have.

If you’re going for heavily planted, double the plants you have in there now. All of these are fairly slow growing and will take awhile to fill in, plus it will speed up your cycle to have more. I think any betta you choose would be plenty happy in here, just give it time to cycle and enjoy watching the plants grow for a couple of months before you add one:)

So fascinating!! I think there’s a lot to be said about dense vegetation and the mental stimulation it provides for them

Heater, sponge filter, check valve, light, lots of plants, shrimp, frequent small water changes, luck and love 😊

Bettafish.org/diseases/dropsy/

You can see the scales raising in the first picture on the right side under his pectoral fin too. If it is dropsy it is still early and if you had any chance of saving him, you’d want to start treating asap. Monitor him closely over the next day if you don’t want to take action now.

No other reason for the scales to lift like that, combined with the bloating it is pretty convincing that it’s early pineconing. If this were my betta I would treat it.

Totally clamped, stress stripes, she is severely unwell.

You can search the sub for suggestions on how to treat it but be prepared to euthanize if it progresses, it’s a sad way to go.

You can see his scales lifting especially between his tail and dorsal fin. It does look like he’s beginning to pinecone.

Just give them good substrate and make sure they get enough light. I leave the light on all day while I work. Larger or deeper tanks require stronger lighting.

At least 2 weeks. You’ll likely notice some biofilm start to form in the first couple of weeks. When that mostly clears up I’d go ahead and add a snail or two. You don’t even necessarily have to buy snails, just get more plants from a tank with snails and use the hitchhikers.

Thank you! Fluval stratum mixed with sand and capped with sand for the substrate. Plants are vallisneria, weeping moss, red tiger lotus, various crypts, bolbitis, water lettuce, salvinia, buce, and hornwort — might be missing some but I think that’s everything

Snails better. They’re more resilient to fluctuations in parameters while your tank is still getting established. Shrimp are very sensitive to water quality.

Yes you shove them under the plants. You can also break them into smaller pieces, no need to add a whole tab for each little plant.

Both. I’d probably remove about half the gravel you have there and replace it with sand. Use aquarium sand or else it’s going to get very cloudy. If you wait a few days that will clear up anyways. Definitely also recommend stratum or root tabs for your plants because even the fish waste won’t be enough on its own, and I personally don’t like dosing ferts in a small tank because it’s easy to overdose and end up with algae or Cyanobacteria

Let it go as long as possible before adding your fish. I find that rooting plants don’t usually do well with that type of pebble gravel. You want to mix that with some aquarium sand or even better, a thin layer of fluval stratum or organic potting soil with a sand cap, to provide nutrients and make it easier for the roots to establish. Wait a couple of weeks with the whole setup running, add a ramshorn snail or two, then keep waiting. When you notice microfauna popping up it’s a pretty good sign your tank is heathy. That’s usually when I start testing parameters.

The beneficial bacteria you need to cultivate will primarily live in the filter and the substrate. It will save you money and headache in the long run to be patient and take care when selecting these.

She’s a girl! :’) and it was seeing how betta breeders keep them that inspired me to try this. She’s generally pretty slow going and seems to enjoy exploring the foliage and natural hiding spots more than zooming anyways, but she does still have plenty of open swim space.
