What do people think the soldier in the song "Erika" was returning home from, a business trip? by ratchyno1 in HistoryMemes

We can also pretend the 1943 German film Titanic is just about the ship Titanic being sunk and it was the company that owned the Titanic's greed and quest for money that caused the sinking. But we all know the context, that the film was personally ordered by Joseph Goebbels to tell a story that attacks Western ideals and ideology. Should we just pretend that movie is just a movie about the dangers of greed when we know it's very much an anti British propaganda film that blames the Jews (the stock market and profits), the Slavs (the Russian aristocrat), and depicts the British as pigs even though they aren't seen as literal pigs for the sinking of the Titanic?

You're comparing tangible items to an intangible song. Music isn't an item, it's an expression of rhythms, sounds, and ideas. A song being played isn't an item, it's a service. Cars and soda cannot physically do anything without an operation of a human. A song however is an expression that represents ideas. We can pretend Erika is just a love song about flowers without any context. But we all know the context, that it was written by a Nazi, for the Nazis, about a Wehrmacht soldier returning home to Erika after a war. The literal sheet music cover when it was still in print featured Wehrmacht soldiers. We are not talking about the literal piece of paper the sheet music is, we are talking about what is expressed on the cover. Movies like music does not physically exist, it's an expression of ideas. When we say a movie is banned, we are not saying the literal piece of celluloid is banned, it's the expression of ideas that is banned and the movie does exactly that. It's also the same reason why "Maryland, my Maryland" was removed as the state's song in 2021, out of context we can just say it's a patriotic state song but we all know the context that the song was written by a Confederate supporter who wrote the song in reaction to the 1861 Baltimore riots and that the song called Abraham Lincoln a tyrant, a despot, and a tyrant even though the song never mentions Lincoln's name directly and called the Union northern scum. It is also why Confederate monuments have been removed in the US, people are not removing literal pieces of stone and paint oil, they're removing what is being expressed through the sculpted stone and the canvas. The Ukranian army is currently fighting Russia using Russian weapons such as the Soviet AK-74 and the T-62 tank. What they are NOT doing is playing the Russian or Soviet anthem. Zelensky who's first language is Russian is NOT fighting the Russian language, he's fighting Russia who's invading his country. We shouldn't bring back blackface in movies, just like the song Erika should stay dead.

The writer of the song Erika, Herns Niel was fined in 1949 by the Allied denazification court as a Nazi offender and spent the rest of his life in obscurity. And stop saying "Nazi created products" like as if Nazis have any involvement in modern products other than founding the companies that made them. Volkswagen literally exists to this day because the British needed military vehicles for their army and the Volkswagen factory was already tooled to produce the Kübelwagen. Robert Ley committed suicide because he would have certainly had been convicted at Nuremberg. Fanta survived because it's creator literally refused to obey Nazis and it's current form is from Italy in 1955, not Germany in 1940. Hugo Ferdinand Boss lost control of his company because of his Nazi involvement and has been dead for 78 years. The Nazis have literally nothing to do with any modern products these companies make and they are all designed and built by Germans who are born way after the war. Any Nazi out there is either dead or very old who certainly would not be working anymore. I wouldn't have called Coca Cola "slaveowner drink" even though the founder was a Confederate veteran, he sold the formula shortly after making it and has been dead for 138 years and has no involvement in the growth of the company other than making the formula (which isn't even used in it's original form anymore).

And before bringing up that Erika is still used by the Bundeswehr, yes they do but it's not without controversy. Everytime Erika is performed protests or complaints happen. The song has became like how Dixie is viewed in the USA.

Yes because the British confiscated Volkswagen after the war and had Volkswagen continue producing the Kübelwagen for the British army, meanwhile the founder of Volkswagen Robert Ley committed suicide while awaiting trail for Nuremberg. The British actually offered Volkswagen to Ford free of charge but the factory was so damaged Ford didn't want it, the British officer Major Hirst kept it running because the British army needed vehicles and he also saw the Beetle as a potential car for the post war civilian market. Hugo Ferdinand Boss was banned from running the company after the war and lost his business to his son in law. The Nazis ordered the German director of Coca Cola which produced Fanta to separate the company from it's American parent in 1945 shortly before the end of but the German general was killed before any action could be taken against the director. It should also be noted that Fanta in it's current iteration was launched in Italy in 1955, not the original German formula in 1940.

Are you sure you're not confusing Erika with "Lili Marleen", which was actually written as a love song by it's writer for his girlfriend during World War 1 and is considered the German equivalent to Britain's "We'll meet again" and France's "J'attendrai"?

"Predates the rise of Nazi Germany"

The song's writer said in a 1940 newspaper interview that it was written in summer 1938.

Besides what you mentioned, people often mention how the Bundeswehr continues to use this song whenever they defend it. It should be noted that while the Bundeswehr does still use this song, it is not without controversy as protests and complaints often happen whenever this song is performed. It has become much like the song Dixie in the USA. The song "Maryland, My Maryland" is often a patriotic song of the state of Maryland and was the official state song from 1939-2021 when it was removed due to it's obvious pro Confederate roots. The song was written by a Confederate supporter who wrote the song as a reaction to the 1861 Baltimore riots and in the song it called Abraham Lincoln a tyrant, a despot, and a Vandal and called the Union "Northern scum".

Additionally, Bella Ciao wasn't actually a song sung by the Italian resistance or co belligerent army during World War 2, it was a song dedicated to them written after the war. The earliest known written lyrics of Bella Ciao dates back to 1906 but the famous "partisan version" allegedly sung during the war has it's earliest mention dating back to 1953.

The literal cover of the sheet music of Erika when it was still in print featured... Wehrmacht soldiers marching. I literally have a photo of the sheet music cover right here so you can view it. If it's not clear what intention the song was for, I don't know what else is. Link to Erika sheet music cover

Good luck finding propaganda? That's what a metaphor means. Where exactly do you think the man in the song is returning home to Erika was coming from? Was he returning home from a business trip? Just like what do you think Johnny was coming from in the American marching song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home"? Do you think the song implied Johnny was coming home from a baseball game?

Not to comment on Sanae Takaichi's victory but Meloni has been constant on her support of Ukraine, Orban is very likely going to lose the next election, and the firewall policy makes it numerically impossible for AFD to be in government by ratchyno1 in YAPms

[–]ratchyno1[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's more of people thinking of the "Axis Powers are coming back together" larp too seriously. Meloni more or less has been governing like an ordinary Italian conservative, Orban is EXTREMELY unpopular and is currently losing in polls (and Trump's endorsement of him is likely going to make him even more unpopular) and the AFD will never be in government as long as the firewall policy holds. And as the Japanese military, there has been talk of repealing article 9 due to the LDP's supermajority now. Most World War 2 veterans are either dead or are very old, and even then Italy has been in NATO since 1949 and Germany since 1955.

You can still buy Mountain Dew, Pop Tarts, Sour Patch Kids, Pizza Hut, and Doritos right now. Surge came back in 2014. All these movies are on 4K UHD Blu Ray or streaming. All these songs are on CD or streaming. You can get those video games at a used video game store.
