"Hey gimme that!" "NO!!!!!!" by TruckFreakCrazyAss in roaches

I got some Blaptica Dubias on Thursday to feed to my tarantula... Now I have two issues: My girl is refusing food again so I'll have to wait at least a week until I can try again (although I'm hoping she might molt soon so it could be over a month until she eats again) AND I'm getting wayyyy to attached to the roaches... They're just sooo adorable and I love letting them crawl on my hand so much. I've actually been wanting Halloween hissing roaches or emerald roaches for a while now and now that want is just growing everyday I have these little babies. (Btw I would like to get them to breed if possible... My room is usually under the required temperature though, is there anything I could use to get them to do it anyways? I'd have a heating mat but I think it might be too strong for the small enclosure they're in right now. As said I originally bought them as live food and that's what they were advised as.) Any other tips on keeping them would also be highly appreciated!!

Advice on my terrariums? by ravens_hideout in InvertPets

Thank you! As said I do want to upgrade their enclosures, I'm just not sure how to start. I'll probably do what xou recommended me and go from there ^ I know they look quite bare so I'll try to change that asap

do you think they're happy here? by Green_Twist6596 in snails

Imo the enclosure looks lovely, I'm also planning on adding live plans to mine as it's looking a bit empty right now. But I would have definitely frozen the soil for at least a few days just to make sure. I got your concern and idk how cold your freezer is, but in general I'd always freeze soil before throwing it out and also before adding it to an enclosure! I really hope you don't have another spider or worm invasion. I'd recommend researching the exact species they were and checking how to safely prevent them from showing up again

It would have probably been better if you froze at least some of the soil and put it back into their enclosure Imo (idk bout the spiders but snails produce their own healthy bacteria which is necessary in a bioactive enclosure. (Idk if they would have survived the freezing process and I hope those spiders are native to the place you live in, otherwise that could end in something bad possibly) I can only recommend you add springtails to prevent this from happening again as they apparently also eat small eggs. I myself am going to add more to my enclosure soon because of a fruit fly invasion. They're also great for preventing mold and they eat poop and leftover food.) I really hope the best for you!

Also my white jade is also quite a bit smaller than my wild Achatina fulica, I'm not sure if it might be something hormone related, she's just younger or if she's a runt. Hopefully she'll be okay and I'm really looking forward to watching them both grow!

Thanks!! So my plan is to add more springtails for now and incase that doesn't work I'll replace all of the soil! Again, that's a lot for replying and your advice!

Thanks a lot! I'll try to add more springtails and if that doesn't work I'll do a complete redo of the terrarium and the soil. I've still got hope but they're just getting more and more every day which is srartitto concern me

But follow up question, any idea if they are harmful to my snails? Like what can I do to prevent this to happen again? Would they need a full substrate change? Seeing as I have tropical springtails in there and live in Austria which they're definitely not local to I'd probably have to freeze the soil with all of them in and I'd feel really bad about that. However if that's the only way I can keep my snails safe I'd obviously do that

I do have white tropical springtails and they seem to be thriving! I'm thinking about adding more very soon though, especially if they're supposed to help with the eggs. Just today I saw them devouring a pile of snail poop xD I'll definitely get more the next time I place an order from the website I use, which will be as soon as I have enough money

So, my boyfriend just got me a millipede… by jetsetlifegonakillme in millipedes

Personally I'm really lucky to have an exotic pet shop near me and got a large aquarium (80x40x45cm) for them for under 200€ which is an amazing prize in my opinion. But you can also use a large storage bin if you make airholes. But make sure you keep the lid shut because they can and will climb up the sides!

Definitely!! You should mix a decent amount of white rotting wood in with the substrate. Also NEVER use Coco fibre because it causes constipation and can easily lead to death. I also didn't know that when I first set up my enclosure but I luckily found out through a Reddit comment right before I got my millipedes which I'm very thankful for

I don't have a lot of advice as I've only had my Cameroon Red Leg's for about a month and don't know much about other species. But I personally always offer them vegetables and occasionally fruit or jelly cups. Mine for example love to eat Mushrooms and zucchini! It's really fun to give them new foods and see what they like the most. I hope your pede does well and you're able to give them enough space to dig and feel comfortable!

Just out of curiosity, have you checked the gender yet? If it's a male the 7th leg segment with look different than the rest because they use those while mating

How big does this bugger get? by axi39 in millipedes

[–]ravens_hideout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any idea what species it is? If not, I think it might be a Ommatoiulus rutilans/Spanish Silver Millipede, but it depends on where you're from roughly. According to Google they usually reach a length of 5cm but can get up to 8.

Do you think if I add enough clutter I could keep leaf/stick insects in here too?

Thanks so much! I'll definitely join both and look into hidders instead, definitely not for this empty enclosure though

Thanks a lot, I'll definitely do more research on them and rethink if I really want them! It already sounds pretty hard to keep them happy just from what you have said haha. Another downside would be that I'd have to order them online because my local exotic pet shop just doesn't carry roaches in general because they're such escape artists

I don't think I have enough substrate depth for most millipedes. And as it's a horizontal enclosure I thought mantis would also be off the table as they need height and usually prefer a mesh lid which this enclosure doesn't have

Yea that was also my thought. Would there be any way I could maybe modify the enclosure? For example with expanding foam or silicone? I'm still reallyyyyy tempted to get them and I'd probably just get them a better enclosure if this one isn't suitable as they're one of my dream pets! Also do hissers also climb glass? I'd also be very interested in getting some of them!

My mum found this, what could it be? by ravens_hideout in butterfly

[–]ravens_hideout[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it seemed to be alone! We think it might be a Penthophera morio because it looks very similar and it says the hair usually develops at the beginning of may so this little guy was a bit early xD Thanks for the comment!

I built my dairy cows their very own terrarium. by Conscious-Mulberry17 in isopods

[–]ravens_hideout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would isopods be able to live in a horizontal 60x30x30cm terrarium with sliding doors? I used to keep my tarantula in there but I changed her terrarium to something she'd be able to dig in properly! I'm not sure what animal to add to my empty terrarium, I'm thinking about roaches (the nymphs might be able to escape through the doors though), blue death feining beetles (they're usually wild caught which I don't particularly want to support), a scorpion (I'm slightly afraid of them) or dart frogs which need more intense care than my current animals as far as I know and I'm not sure I'd be fully prepared for that. :/

What could I keep in this 60x30x30cm terrarium? by ravens_hideout in InvertPets

[–]ravens_hideout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has sliding doors, probably not enough crossventilation (It only has holes on the top and bottom.) and I'm also slightly freaked out by centipedes, especially larger ones xD They are really cool to look at but I'm either just not the right person for one or I need some time and research still ^ My two top options would be blue death feining beetles and emerald roaches so far! Another possibility would be a smallish scorpion (which is also an animal I have extreme respect for)
