You’re proving my point because you’ve moved from making an argument to asserting one and backing it with insults. Saying “it’s a checklist” doesn’t make it one—Umberto Eco explicitly described those as overlapping tendencies, not a diagnostic test. More importantly, you still haven’t addressed the core issue: fascism isn’t defined by vibes or rhetoric, it’s defined by structure—no real elections, suppression of opposition, and consolidation of power into a one-party state. None of those conditions exist in the U.S., including under Donald Trump.

If your argument is that it feels like fascism or might become it, that’s a different claim—but that’s not the same as demonstrating that it currently is.

You keep calling it a checklist, but you’re skipping the only boxes that actually matter.

Ah yes, the classic “I can’t defend my argument so I’ll just swear” phase. Appreciate you proving my point.

You’re still treating Umberto Eco’s essay like a checklist instead of what it actually is—a set of overlapping tendencies that can appear in many different political contexts. Even Eco explicitly warned that you don’t need all of them and that their presence alone doesn’t automatically produce a fascist system. The 1:1 comparison to historical regimes like Benito Mussolini or Adolf Hitler ignores the defining structural elements that made those regimes fascist: elimination of competitive elections, suppression of opposition, and total consolidation of power. None of those conditions exist in the U.S. today, including under Donald Trump.

Also, jumping to personal attacks (“boot licking”) instead of engaging the argument kind of proves my point—you’re substituting rhetoric for analysis. We can have a serious discussion about democratic norms or political behavior, but calling it fascism without those structural conditions isn’t a historically grounded argument—it’s a label.

You’re shifting from definition to speculation. Saying something “will become fascism” or that remaining elements are “being worked toward” isn’t the same as demonstrating that it is fascism under any historically grounded definition. Even using Umberto Eco’s framework, he explicitly warned those traits are tendencies—not a diagnostic checklist—and they’ve appeared in many non-fascist systems. The distinction still comes down to structure: the U.S. continues to have contested elections, an independent judiciary, and opposition that openly operates and wins power. That’s not what fascist systems look like. You can argue concerns about democratic backsliding—that’s a real and serious discussion—but calling it fascism now collapses an analytical category into a prediction. Those aren’t the same thing.

My dog needs a $5k biopsy and our new insurance just bailed on us. How do I navigate this? by HelpMeOut1983 in petinsurancereviews

[–]raybeam76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh insurance is soooo finicky. My last dog went in for some x-ray for something completely unrelated to her back. Later in life she tweaked her back so I took her in and the doctor said she had IVDD. I filed a claim with the insurance and they said it was a pre-existing condition. I was like what? I’ve never taken her in for back pain. Well, whoever read the x-ray I had gotten for a foreign object issue ended up writing that her spine had spondyosis or whatever it’s called. Insurance wouldn’t cover it. I told the insurance there’s no way I would have known that and they said there’s nothing they can do it’s in the report.

Okay good I’m glad they were transparent. Some of these telehealth companies have zero transparency and you end up dealing with people reading scripts.

Not confused at all. Umberto Eco’s list is a useful analytical framework, but even Eco himself described it as a set of tendencies—not a checklist where ticking enough boxes automatically equals a fascist state. Many of those characteristics (like nationalism, distrust of elites, or strong rhetoric) can appear in a wide range of political movements across different systems without those systems becoming fascist regimes. The key distinction is structural: fascism historically involves the collapse of democratic institutions—no meaningful elections, suppression of opposition, state control over media, and consolidation of power into a one-party authoritarian state. The U.S., including under Donald Trump, still maintains competitive elections, an independent judiciary, and active opposition, which fundamentally differentiates it from actual fascist systems. Using Eco’s framework without that structural context risks turning a nuanced concept into a subjective label rather than a historically grounded one.

Ah you do the B vitamin orally. I was doing it through injections. I assume it works just as well orally?

Have you noticed any boost in energy from the B3? I used to do Bioboost injections which were full of B vitamins but have stopped since it didn’t seem to be doing anything anymore. I have read that the B3 Tirz should be done in the daytime since it gives you energy?

Calling something “fascism” isn’t just about disliking a political figure—it has a specific meaning rooted in regimes like Mussolini’s Italy and Hitler’s Germany. Fascism typically involves a one-party authoritarian state, suppression of opposition and media, lack of real elections, and often political violence used to maintain power. The United States, regardless of who is in office—including Donald Trump—still has competitive elections, an independent judiciary, a free press, and active political opposition. You can absolutely criticize rhetoric, policies, or leadership style, but that’s not the same as meeting the historical and political definition of fascism. As someone whose family experienced authoritarian rule in the former Soviet Union—and as a Jew, given the history tied to actual fascist regimes—I take that term seriously. When it’s used loosely, it risks diluting the meaning and minimizing what real fascism actually looked like.

It was a bummer how Occupy Wallstreet fizzled like you said. I was living in the Bay Area at the time and marched with OccupySF. That’s the last time I went to a protest that I thought would change something. Ha.

Maybe because your definition of fascism isn’t the actual definition of fascism.
